A paper-feel iPad screen protector can make the display look grainy or softer because its matte surface trades some clarity for less glare and more friction for Apple Pencil writing. If gentle cleaning and checking for a leftover installation film do not change the appearance, the grain is probably an inherent part of that matte finish—not something a brightness setting can fix.
Why does a paper-feel protector look grainy?
Paper-feel protectors use a textured matte surface to add friction and resistance for drawing and note-taking. That same finish reduces glare and can make fingerprints less visible, but it may also soften the image compared with a bare screen or a clear protector. Paperfeel describes the added friction and anti-glare finish in its product information; Belkin says its matte film can give the display a “slightly softer appearance” than a bare screen or clear protector and describes that effect as normal in its Paper Film FAQ. ESR likewise explains that the display will not look as clear as it does without the protector in its support FAQ.

The exact amount of softness varies by product and viewing conditions; the cited manufacturers do not publish a comparable measurement of clarity loss. So a grainy appearance alone does not establish that your iPad display is damaged.

Look for dirt, smudges, bubbles, or installation film
If the screen suddenly looks worse, inspect it under good light. Check for dust or smudges on the surface, bubbles beneath the protector, and any protective sheet left over from installation. Paperlike’s guide to identifying a screen protector notes that a protector typically has a matte appearance and a raised edge; it also cautions that stacking a protector over another can affect touch or Apple Pencil responsiveness.

Clean it gently
- Turn off and unplug the iPad.
- Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth to wipe the screen and protector gently, following Apple’s cleaning guidance.
- Do not use abrasive materials, paper towels, household or window cleaners, solvents, or ammonia, and do not spray liquid directly onto the device.
Apple warns that abrasive rubbing can diminish the screen’s oleophobic coating and might scratch it. If the protector’s matte texture is producing the softness, cleaning will not remove that trade-off.
Do not expect a display setting to remove matte grain
Brightness or other display adjustments may change how the image looks to you, but the cited manufacturer guidance does not identify a setting that restores the clarity lost through a matte finish. If cleaning and removing any leftover installation layer make no difference, treat the appearance as a property of the protector.

For example, Paperfeel describes its magnetic protector for 10.2-inch iPad 7th, 8th, and 9th generation models as removable for reading or video and lists compatible model numbers on its product page. ESR also describes magnetic removal in its support information. Those examples do not establish compatibility with other iPad models.

Before replacing or adding a protector
- Match the replacement to your iPad’s exact generation and model number, not just its screen diagonal. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list; model details are available in the iPad’s Settings under General > About.
- Do not put a paper-feel film over another protector unless the manufacturer says the combination is supported. Stacking may reduce touch or Apple Pencil responsiveness.
- If the matte appearance is not acceptable after ruling out dirt or installation film, choose a clear/glossy protector or use the screen without a protector instead.
