Contact the airline as soon as you know you will miss your connection and ask it to reroute you to the final destination on your original itinerary. Whether the airline must help—and whether you may qualify for care, a refund, or compensation—depends on how the flights were booked, the route, and what caused the missed connection. First check whether all flights are on one reservation or on separate bookings.
What to do first at the airport
- Contact the airline operating the disrupted itinerary. Use its app or phone line, and go to its transfer desk or airport service counter if one is available. Ask for the next available way to reach the final destination shown on your original itinerary. In the UK, government guidance says the airline should help organise an alternative flight in specified cases where a delay or cancellation on a single-reservation itinerary caused the missed connection. GOV.UK guidance
- Have the key details ready. Provide your booking reference, ticket number, missed flight number, the inbound flight’s delay or cancellation and its timing, and the destination you still need to reach. Ask the agent to confirm the proposed routing in writing, including whether every segment is confirmed.
- Ask about baggage and immediate assistance. Find out whether checked bags will be transferred automatically or whether you need to collect and recheck them. Ask what meals, accommodation, or other care may be available while you wait; eligibility depends on the applicable rules and circumstances.
- Keep records and receipts. Save the original itinerary, boarding passes, delay or cancellation alerts, airline messages, and receipts for necessary expenses. Ask before making a major purchase yourself: reimbursement for a replacement ticket or other costs is not automatic in every situation.
- Compare alternatives before accepting or buying another ticket. Ask the airline what other routes it can offer and whether there is a deadline to accept. If you are considering buying a ticket independently, first ask the airline to state its position and keep that response.
Check whether you have one reservation or separate tickets
One reservation for the whole trip
Check your confirmation and e-ticket to see whether the connecting flights were booked together as one reservation. A single reservation is an important clue, but check the actual ticket and applicable terms rather than relying only on a booking website’s display. GOV.UK tells passengers whose connecting flights were booked together, and who missed a connection after a preceding delay, cancellation, or delay in accessibility assistance, to speak to the airline; it says the airline should help arrange an alternative flight. Separate bookings or a self-transfer
If you bought separate tickets, the airline for the flight you missed may treat it as a no-show, even if an earlier flight on another ticket was delayed. GOV.UK warns that airlines may not be able to help with the onward journey in the same way when flights are on different bookings. The UK Civil Aviation Authority says travellers on self-transfer trips booked separately do not have a statutory right to care, compensation, or transport to the last destination if a delay makes them miss a flight; rights relating to each individual flight still apply. Contract terms, insurance, or other consumer-law remedies may be relevant, but are not established by that statutory-rights guidance. UK CAA guidance on missed connections

Which passenger-rights rules may apply?
Do not assume that the rules of the country where you live apply to every leg. The UK and EU guidance below describes coverage by route and carrier; other jurisdictions may use different rules.
| Guidance | Routes it describes as covered |
|---|---|
| UK government guidance | Flights departing a UK airport on any airline; flights arriving at a UK airport on a UK or EU airline; and flights arriving at an EU airport on a UK airline. GOV.UK coverage information |
| Your Europe / EU guidance | Flights within the EU on EU or non-EU airlines; flights arriving in the EU from outside on an EU airline; and flights departing the EU to a non-EU country on either an EU or non-EU airline. The guidance includes a condition concerning benefits already received under applicable non-EU law for the same journey. Your Europe passenger-rights guidance |
| U.S. Department of Transportation guidance cited here | Addresses refunds after cancellations or significant changes; it is not a comprehensive rule requiring airlines to rebook every missed connection. U.S. DOT refund guidance |
Separate rebooking, care, refunds, and compensation
These are different questions, with different eligibility tests. Being entitled to one remedy does not by itself establish a right to all the others.

Rerouting to your destination
For the UK scenarios described above, GOV.UK says to contact the airline for help arranging an alternative flight. For EU-covered disruption, Your Europe lists rerouting to the destination at the earliest opportunity or at a later time under comparable conditions among the options. If an accepted reroute reaches a different airport serving the same town or region, the EU guidance says the airline should bear transport costs to the original or agreed destination airport. Care, such as meals or accommodation, is not the same as transport to your destination. A refund instead of continuing
A refund means abandoning some or all of the journey rather than taking a replacement flight. The UK CAA says that if a connecting flight is delayed by more than five hours, a passenger may choose a refund for the unused portion of the ticket and abandon the journey, with the airline still responsible for return to the original departure point. U.S. DOT refund guidance concerns cancelled or significantly changed travel: in the defined circumstances, a refund is due if the passenger does not accept alternative travel. Neither rule should be read as a universal missed-connection refund rule. UK CAA guidance · U.S. DOT guidance
Compensation for a late arrival
Compensation is separate from rebooking and care. Under Your Europe’s EU guidance, a missed connection may qualify if you arrive at your final destination more than three hours late, the flights were under one reservation, EU passenger-rights rules apply, and extraordinary circumstances did not cause the delay. The guidance says delays caused by security checks or by failing to respect boarding time at the transfer airport do not qualify. UK compensation also depends on the applicable rules and cause; exceptional circumstances can affect compensation without automatically deciding whether assistance or rerouting is due. How to compare the routes the airline offers
When the airline gives you a choice, compare the practical outcome—not just the departure time:

- Arrival time: Which option gets you to the ticketed final destination soonest in practice?
- Further connections: Does the route add another tight transfer that could lead to another missed flight?
- Airport: Does it arrive at the original destination airport? If not, find out who will arrange or pay for onward ground transport.
- Baggage: Will your bags follow the new itinerary, or must you collect and recheck them?
- Confirmation: Are all segments confirmed on the same itinerary, or is any leg still waitlisted or unconfirmed?
- Personal requirements: Will the route work with accessibility needs, visa or transit requirements, and any package itinerary?
What the U.S. refund guidance does—and does not—say
The U.S. DOT page cited here covers refunds after cancellations or significant changes, not a general right to rebooking after every missed connection. It says airlines often offer alternative flights after a cancellation or significant delay or change, while DOT does not require those offers in the described context. It also explains that a refund is due in defined circumstances when a passenger does not accept the alternative travel. Read the page’s conditions before relying on it for a particular disruption.
