A mute LED that stays dark on Linux can point to a hardware-specific audio-driver configuration issue, even when muting itself still works. Linux changelogs document Realtek ALC245 mute-LED quirks for several HP Victus models, but those records do not establish that the Reddit workaround or kernel patch behind the headline was the same fix. Identify your exact laptop and running kernel before applying any workaround.
What a dark mute LED does—and does not—tell you
The indicator and the mute function are related but distinct. If audio or the microphone still mutes correctly while the LED remains off, the failure may be limited to how the driver signals the indicator; if muting also fails, there may be a broader audio problem. A dark LED alone does not identify the cause.

Kernel changelog entries provide one concrete example of an indicator requiring a model-specific audio-driver quirk. They concern particular HP Victus laptops using the Realtek ALC245 codec—not every Linux laptop, or every machine with a mute LED.

The Linux 6.15.4 changelog, dated June 9, 2025, says the mute LED on HP Victus 16-s1xxx and HP Victus 15-fa1xxx laptops uses ALC245 but requires a quirk. The entry enabled an existing quirk and reports testing on a Victus 16-s1011nt and a Victus 15-fa1xxx. Read the Linux 6.15.4 changelog entry.

Why the headline’s Reddit workaround cannot be matched to these fixes
A DEV Community result identifies the headline “Faulty mute LED That Wouldn’t Light: Chasing a Reddit Hack Into a Kernel Patch,” its author, Krish Gulati, and the Linux, kernel, and ALSA tags. The result does not expose the article body or the Reddit post. It therefore does not verify the laptop model, the workaround, or the patch discussed in that story. View the DEV Community Linux tag.
The HP Victus changelog entries are useful related evidence, but there is no established link between them and the story’s Reddit-derived fix. Treat them as separate examples unless the article or its linked patch confirms a connection.

What to identify before trying a fix
- Exact laptop model: Record the full model or product identifier, not just the manufacturer or family name.
- Board ID: Check it when a fix is tied to one, as with the Victus 16-d1xxx entry for board ID 8A26.
- Audio codec: Confirm whether the machine uses the codec named in the relevant fix; the cited Victus entries concern Realtek ALC245.
- Running kernel: Check the kernel your distribution actually boots. A changelog entry for a kernel release does not prove that a distribution includes the fix in its current package.
- What is failing: Test whether muting works and only the indicator is dark, or whether the mute function also fails.
The available changelog records do not establish which distributions currently include these changes, and they do not provide safe installation steps for a particular machine. Do not install an arbitrary kernel or copy a model-specific quirk without confirming that the hardware and driver match.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret a possible kernel fix
A matching model name is a clue, not proof of compatibility. Compare the precise subfamily, any stated board ID, the codec, and the kernel version containing the change. If those details do not line up, the cited Victus changes are not evidence that the same fix applies to your laptop. For a machine that does match, consult your distribution’s kernel package information or support documentation to establish whether the relevant change is included before changing kernels.
