If files seem to have vanished from a Chromebook, start in the Files app: check Recent, search by name, and then inspect Downloads, Google Drive, Play files, Linux files, and any connected storage. The location matters: Downloads is stored on the Chromebook, while Google Drive is cloud storage. Google also warns that low device storage can cause downloaded files to be deleted automatically.
Find a missing file in the Files app
- Open Files and check Recent. Recent is a quick place to look for files opened or changed lately. Sort the list by name, size, type, or date if that helps.
- Search across available files. Use the search control near the upper right of Files, or search from the Launcher. Try part of the filename as well as the full name.
- Open Downloads. Browser downloads and other files saved locally often appear here. Downloads is on the Chromebook, not the same location as Google Drive.
- Check Google Drive. Browse My Drive or the relevant Shared drive, and confirm you are signed into the Google Account where the file was saved. If Drive does not load, check your internet connection. Files kept offline are a separate device-storage category.
- Look in Play files for Android app files. In Files, open My files > Play files. If an expected folder is absent, use the Files menu to show additional Play folders where available.
- Check removable storage. A connected USB drive or SD card should appear in the left column of Files. When finished, eject it safely.
- Check the Linux files environment if the file was created or saved by a Linux app; Linux files use a separate environment and backup workflow.
- Check other services and shared locations. Chromebook Files can work with supported cloud file systems and SMB shares, depending on the setup.
Google’s Chromebook file guidance describes these locations and warns: “Your Chromebook’s hard drive has limited space, so your Chromebook will sometimes delete downloaded files to clean up space.”

Why files seem to disappear
The file was saved somewhere unexpected
Chrome normally downloads to Downloads, but a save dialog can direct a file to Drive or another folder. Android apps may put files in Play files, while Linux apps use Linux files. Search first, then check the location the app or save dialog used.

Google says a Chromebook may delete downloaded files to free space. This warning concerns local downloads; it does not mean Drive files are cleared in the same way. Review local storage before assuming a file was deleted, and check whether a copy exists in Drive or another backup.

The file was deleted
Many files deleted through Files go to Trash, but Google says some deletions—particularly deletion from Downloads—are permanent. Trash items are permanently deleted after 30 days, so check it promptly.
The cloud file is not visible or synced
Confirm the Google Account, folder, network connection, and sync status. A file may be in a different account or shared location than the one currently open.
The file is on an external drive or the Chromebook was reset
Reconnect the drive and see whether it appears in Files. If it is not recognized, avoid formatting it; inspect it on another compatible computer or back it up first. A factory reset erases local Chromebook user data, including Downloads.

Can you recover deleted Chromebook files?
Restore an item from Trash
- Open the Files app and select Trash.
- Select the file and choose Restore from trash.
Google’s Files instructions say Trash items are permanently deleted after 30 days. Some deletions bypass Trash, so restoration is not available for every file.
If the file was deleted from Downloads
Google’s Downloads guidance says deleting a Downloads file is permanent and cannot be undone. Check Trash if the deletion flow may have moved it there, but do not count on restoration. Search Drive and any other backups for another copy.
If low storage may have removed it
Open Settings > System preferences > Storage management and review Downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android storage, and other users. Free space carefully, then protect any remaining important local files by copying them to a durable location. Google does not promise that cache cleanup or recovery software can restore files automatically removed from Downloads.

If the file was on USB or SD storage
Check whether the device mounts in Files. Google lists support for file systems including FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS, along with others. If the Chromebook cannot recognize the device, inspect it on another computer and make a backup before taking action. Formatting erases the drive’s contents.

Back up local files before resetting. Google says a reset erases user data on the Chromebook hard drive, including Downloads, but does not erase files stored in Google Drive or on external storage. For a managed school or work Chromebook, an administrator may need to help.
Keep important files from disappearing again
Move important downloads out of Downloads
Copy or move files you want to keep into My Drive or another durable folder. Google’s advice is: “To save a file, make sure to put it in a permanent folder.” See Keep your downloaded files from being deleted for the relevant settings and guidance.

Choose a deliberate download destination
In Chrome, open Settings > Downloads to change the download location or enable Ask where to save each file before downloading. This makes the destination explicit instead of relying on Downloads as the default.
Keep a second copy of essential local files
A compatible USB flash drive or external drive can provide a separate backup. Check the Chromebook’s ports and the drive’s supported format before relying on it, and eject it safely. An extra drive helps preserve files going forward; it cannot recover a copy that has already been permanently deleted. Google lists compatible formats and external-device guidance here.

Back up Linux files separately
Use the Linux backup and restore workflow rather than assuming Linux files are included with other local folders. Google’s Linux backup instructions describe a .tini backup; restoring it to another Chromebook requires the same architecture, such as x86 or ARM.

Review storage before deleting files
Storage management shows which categories are consuming local space. Check what a file is and whether it has a backup before removing it to free room. Google explains storage categories and cleanup options in Free up space on your Chromebook.

|---|---|---|
| Downloads | Local Chromebook storage and the usual browser-download destination | Low storage may trigger automatic cleanup; manual deletion may be permanent. |
| Google Drive | Cloud storage available from Files when signed in | Check the right account and network access; offline copies use device storage. |
| USB or external drive | Removable storage for transfer or a second copy | Compatibility varies; eject safely, and formatting erases contents. |
| Play files | File area for Android apps | Additional Play folders may need to be shown in Files. |
| Linux files | Files in the separate Linux environment | Use the dedicated backup process; another Chromebook must match the architecture for restore. |
