A 403 from a LINE bot does not, by itself, point to npm version drift, a Node.js mismatch, or Cloudflare. First identify which request failed and which component returned the response. A LINE webhook is an incoming request to your bot; a Messaging API call is an outgoing request from it. Those paths need different diagnostics.
First identify the failing request
Reproduce the error and determine whether it occurs when you click Verify in the LINE Developers Console, when LINE delivers an incoming webhook event, or when your bot calls the Messaging API. Record the request URL and method, status, response body and headers, and timestamp. The status code alone cannot establish which layer failed.

Compare Cloudflare security or event logs with your Worker or application logs for the same timestamp. If the request appears in Cloudflare but not in application logs, investigate the edge configuration or access controls. If it reaches the application, inspect the route and code that generated the response. For an outgoing Messaging API failure, inspect that request’s endpoint, credentials, and response rather than applying webhook fixes.
Check Node.js, npm, and the resolved SDK version
Run these commands in the same environment used to build or deploy the bot:

node --version
npm --versionLINE’s current Node.js SDK requirements page specifies Node.js 22 or later and preferably npm 10 or later. Check the declared SDK range in package.json and the resolved version recorded in the lockfile; then ensure the deployment uses the intended versions and a consistent install. See LINE Bot SDK for Node.js requirements.
A mismatch in npm or Node.js can cause installation or build inconsistency, but it is not evidence that either one returned a particular HTTP 403. Use the response and matching logs to establish the cause before changing versions.

Account for SDK major-version changes
Package upgrades can also require code changes independently of npm version drift. LINE SDK v11 removed the legacy Client and OAuth APIs and associated legacy types. LINE recommends migrating legacy code through v10.8.0 before moving to v11. Review the LINE SDK release notes against the version your lockfile actually resolves.
If the bot runs on Cloudflare Workers
Check the deployed Worker configuration, including its compatibility date and flags. LINE’s Cloudflare-and-Hono tutorial enables the nodejs_compat compatibility flag because the SDK uses Node.js crypto for webhook signature verification. The tutorial gives this configuration example:

}Use the syntax appropriate to your Wrangler configuration file and verify the setting in the deployed environment, not only in a local file. Consult Cloudflare’s Node.js compatibility documentation and LINE’s Cloudflare + Hono bot tutorial before changing runtime settings.
The LINE tutorial, published October 1, 2026, reports a tested environment of Node.js 26.8.1, create-hono 0.19.5, Hono 4.13.9, Wrangler 4.144.0, and LINE Messaging API SDK for Node.js 11.2.0. These are the tutorial’s reported versions, not minimum requirements for every Worker. The tutorial documents nodejs_compat; it does not establish that omitting the flag always causes a 403.

For webhook URL verification, return HTTP 200
LINE’s webhook URL communication check sends an HTTP POST without a webhook event, and expects the receiving endpoint to return status code 200. The request can contain an empty events array, so an event handler that assumes at least one event exists may fail during verification.

Validate the signature against the original request body
For incoming webhooks, LINE signs the request body with HMAC-SHA256 using the channel secret and sends the result in the x-line-signature header. Verify the signature using the exact received body and the correct channel secret, before parsing or reformatting the body. As LINE Messaging API engineer Okuzono wrote on June 18, 2026: “Verify against the raw body exactly as received.” See LINE’s signature verification documentation.
If validation fails, check for a wrong or rotated channel secret, an incorrect algorithm, or middleware, a proxy, or a load balancer changing the body or signature header. JSON reformatting, escape handling, or non-UTF-8 processing can also alter the bytes being checked. A signature failure does not prove why the endpoint returned 403: inspect how your application maps validation errors to HTTP responses.
Use the evidence to choose the next fix
- Console verification or incoming delivery: confirm the request reaches the intended endpoint, the endpoint handles an empty event list, and verification returns HTTP 200.
- Signature validation failure: compare the raw received body,
x-line-signature, and channel secret; check for body or header changes before the verifier. - Cloudflare Worker request: inspect deployed compatibility settings and Cloudflare logs alongside application logs.
- Build or deployment problem: compare the active Node.js and npm versions with the SDK requirements and the resolved lockfile version; check for SDK migration changes.
- Outgoing Messaging API call: troubleshoot its endpoint, credentials, and response separately from incoming webhook handling.
Without the failing request, full response, deployed versions and configuration, and matching logs, the component responsible for a specific 403 remains undetermined.
