For most people choosing a personal password manager in 2026, Bitwarden is the stronger place to start: its free account is advertised as available at no cost, and an independent October 2026 review describes its free tier as syncing unlimited passwords and secure notes across devices. LastPass may still suit users who rely on its particular features, but its 2022 vault-data theft and attacks in 2024 using information associated with that incident belong in any decision. For families and organizations, compare current plan details and checkout prices rather than relying on a blanket winner.
At a glance: which one fits your needs?
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free access across devices | Bitwarden | Its free tier is described in October 2026 coverage as syncing unlimited passwords and secure notes across devices. Check the current plan page for limits before signing up. |
| Paid personal or family plan | Compare at checkout | Bitwarden publishes annual USD prices; the retrieved LastPass pricing content did not provide a stable, directly comparable current checkout figure. |
| Specific workflow or features you already use | Test both on your devices | Autofill behavior and feature fit depend on your browser, phone, account and plan. |
| Team or enterprise deployment | Compare administration and total contract cost | Per-user prices alone do not establish whether identity integrations, provisioning, audit controls, policies and support meet your requirements. |
What do the plans cost?
Bitwarden’s comparison page lists the following annual-subscription prices in USD, before taxes. The figures are vendor-page prices and can change with time, region and subscription terms.

How do the free plans and device access compare?
Bitwarden
Bitwarden is the clearer choice if you want a free account with broad cross-device access. An October 2026 review describes the free tier as supporting unlimited password and secure-note syncing across devices. Because free-plan limits and features can change, confirm the current terms on Bitwarden’s official comparison page before moving your vault.

LastPass
The available LastPass pricing information confirms that individual and family options exist, but does not establish a complete current free-tier limit comparison. Check its live plan details against the devices and features you actually need rather than assuming the two free offerings are equivalent.
What about encryption, multifactor authentication and incident history?
LastPass says it uses AES-256 local encryption and a zero-knowledge architecture, and lists multifactor options and alerts for compromised credentials. Those are the provider’s statements about its design and features—not independent verification of implementation or proof that it is more secure than Bitwarden. Its official plan page describes the available features.

Independent October 2026 coverage recounts the 2022 LastPass incident, in which customer vault data was stolen, and a later 2024 wave of attacks using information connected to that stolen data. This history is relevant when weighing trust and risk, but it does not mean every vault was decrypted or every customer was affected. The available material is not a comprehensive incident-history audit of both services, so it cannot support a claim that Bitwarden has never had security issues.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStrengthen account access with multifactor authentication
Use multifactor authentication where your account and devices support it. LastPass lists hardware keys as one possible additional layer; a physical FIDO security key such as a YubiKey is optional, not a requirement. Check the key’s compatibility with your account and device before buying or relying on one.

Which is better for families?
Bitwarden lists a Families plan for up to six users with unlimited sharing. LastPass also presents a family plan for six users. The plan descriptions alone do not establish that sharing controls, member administration and recovery work identically, so compare those details along with the live total price before enrolling everyone.
Bitwarden announced Premium and Families enhancements in January 2026, including increased attachment storage and more security-key capacity, and referred to passkey support and sharing. Because feature availability can depend on tier and client, verify the current product documentation for the particular account and devices you plan to use.

Which works better for a business?
Bitwarden’s comparison lists Teams at $4 per user/month and Enterprise at $6 per user/month, based on annual subscriptions. These vendor-listed USD figures exclude taxes and may change; they are not a full measure of deployment cost. LastPass’s business comparison discusses security monitoring and administration, while warning that a single per-user price can hide meaningful plan differences.

Will either one feel better in everyday use?
Tom’s Guide’s October 2026 review praised Bitwarden’s free tier but noted some interface and autofill friction in its editorial assessment. That is the reviewer’s evaluation, not a universal result: autofill can vary by browser, operating system, app and login form. Before importing your whole password collection, test each candidate on the browser and phone you use most, including the sites and apps where autofill matters.
How should you decide—and switch safely?
- List the essentials. Note your devices, whether you need free cross-device syncing, family sharing or business administration, and any must-have integrations.
- Check the current plans. Compare the providers’ live plan pages and checkout totals, including seats, taxes, renewal terms and relevant feature limits.
- Try daily use first. Test login filling and multifactor sign-in on your own browser and phone before committing to a full move.
- Verify your transfer path. If switching from LastPass, consult current official support documentation for exporting the vault and importing it into the destination. Confirm that the resulting entries are present before removing access to the original vault. These steps have not been independently validated here.
- Rotate passwords where warranted. Change credentials for accounts that may have been exposed, prioritizing important accounts and reusing no password across services.
Verdict
Choose Bitwarden as the default starting point if you want a capable free option with cross-device syncing. Consider LastPass if its specific workflow is important to you, while factoring its incident history into your trust decision. For families and businesses, the sensible winner is the service whose current plan, controls and total cost meet your actual needs—not whichever brand wins a blanket comparison.
