A hostname can stop resolving—or resolve but still fail to serve the intended application—after an alias change for several different reasons. The record may conflict with existing DNS data, use an unsupported apex configuration, point to the wrong target, or lack the matching hostname, certificate, or route setup at the destination. The exact cause cannot be identified without the hostname, DNS provider, old and new records, target, and error; this sequence separates the main possibilities.
First identify which DNS zone and hostname you changed
- Find the active DNS provider. Check the domain’s delegated nameservers, then make changes in the zone served by those nameservers. Editing a former provider’s zone will not change public DNS.
- Write down the exact hostname. A zone apex is the domain itself, such as
example.com. A subdomain is a name beneath it, such aswww.example.comorlogistics.example.com. - Capture the current record set and intended destination. Check every record at that exact owner name, including A, AAAA, CNAME, and provider-specific alias records. Do not remove a record until you know which service depends on it.
Check for records that conflict at the same name
A standard CNAME is intended to supply DNS information for its owner name, so it cannot coexist with ordinary records such as A or AAAA records—or another CNAME—at that same name. Cloudflare explains that adding extra records at a CNAME’s name would send conflicting information to DNS servers (Cloudflare’s CNAME conflict guidance; last updated July 20, 2026).

Compare the full owner name, not just the destination. A record for example.com does not conflict with a CNAME for logistics.example.com; records sharing the latter name may. If you find a conflict, determine which service should receive traffic before replacing or deleting anything.
If the hostname is the zone apex, verify the record type is supported
A standard CNAME cannot be created at a zone apex such as example.com. AWS states that limitation in its Route 53 guidance. Some DNS providers offer an apex-compatible mechanism—often called an alias, ALIAS, or flattened CNAME—but those names do not guarantee identical behavior or target support.

- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices

- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Check your provider’s rules for the specific record type and destination. Route 53 alias records are a Route 53 extension, not standard CNAMEs; AWS documents their behavior and restrictions in its alias and non-alias record documentation. In the documented case, a Route 53 alias at the apex cannot target a CNAME record. Azure Front Door’s setup instructions also describe using Azure DNS alias records or CNAME flattening from a provider that supports it; the apex may nevertheless display “CNAME record is currently not detected” after an apex alias is configured (Microsoft’s Azure Front Door custom-domain guidance). That status by itself does not establish that the apex alias failed.
Make sure the destination service is configured for the hostname
Changing DNS directs a name toward a destination; it does not necessarily register that name with the destination service. The application or delivery service may still need the custom hostname, certificate, endpoint association, or route configured.

For a CloudFront distribution
The hostname must be listed as an alternate domain name on the distribution as well as mapped correctly in DNS. Follow the CloudFront alternate domain name instructions and verify the distribution’s DNS configuration. A DNS alias alone does not add the hostname to the distribution.
For Azure Front Door
Validate the custom domain and associate it with the appropriate endpoint and route. Microsoft’s custom-domain setup guidance describes these steps. If an Azure Web App sits behind Front Door, Microsoft also notes that matching the root hostname and backend host header avoids a redirect loop in that configuration.

Test authoritative DNS, then check caching
Query the authoritative nameserver to see what the active zone publishes, then query a recursive resolver to see what clients may currently receive. For example, replace the sample names with your hostname and authoritative server:
dig logistics.example.com CNAME
dig @ns1.example-dns.com logistics.example.com A
nslookup logistics.example.com
The first query asks the default resolver for a CNAME; the second asks a specified authoritative server for an A record; the third uses the system’s configured resolver. Adapt the record type to the change you made. Compare the answer with the intended target, and confirm the authoritative server is one of the domain’s delegated nameservers.

A recursive resolver may continue returning cached data until its cached entry expires. CloudFront’s guide recommends checking DNS propagation and notes that propagation can take 24–48 hours in some cases; this is an operational possibility, not a guaranteed waiting period for every change (CloudFront alternate domain name guidance). If the authoritative answer is wrong, waiting for cache expiry will not fix the zone configuration.
If DNS is correct but the application still fails
When the authoritative DNS answer matches the intended destination, move the investigation to the service receiving the request. Check whether the custom hostname has been validated and attached, whether its certificate is active, and whether the destination’s host-header and routing configuration accepts that name. A DNS lookup proves where the name points; it does not prove the service is ready to answer for it.

What the available facts cannot establish
Without the provider, exact hostname, prior and current record sets, target, and observed error, it is not possible to identify a particular root cause for a logistics hostname. The most useful comparison is whether the name is an apex or subdomain, whether the provider supports the chosen alias type and target, whether same-name records conflict, whether ownership validation is complete, whether the destination has its hostname and route configured, and whether resolver caching explains a difference between authoritative and client-visible answers.
