A wrong Google Maps pin can mean two different things: the blue dot is estimating your current position incorrectly, or a searched address/place has an incorrect map record. The first is a location-estimate problem; the second requires a map-data correction. A manually dropped pin is a third case that you can verify and reshare yourself.
First, identify which pin is wrong
Google Maps uses several kinds of markers, and the fix depends on which one you are seeing.

| What you see | What it represents | Correct approach |
|---|---|---|
| Blue dot, often surrounded by a pale-blue circle | Google’s estimate of the device’s current location | Check browser permission, connectivity and environmental obstructions; then reload or restart if necessary. |
| Marker for a searched street address, business or place | A location stored in Google’s map database | Use Suggest an edit → Wrong pin location or address to report the public record. |
| A point you selected by pressing and holding or clicking the map | A coordinate you chose manually | Zoom in, verify the point, and share its coordinates or Plus Code when an address label is ambiguous. |
These categories can look similar on screen. A wrong blue dot does not prove that the address database is wrong, and an incorrect address marker does not necessarily indicate a GPS failure.
Why the blue dot can appear in the wrong place
The blue dot is an estimate of your current position, not a surveyed marker guaranteed to sit on the exact doorway or parking space. The light-blue circle around it shows the area in which Maps believes you could be. A smaller circle indicates greater confidence; a large circle means the estimate is uncertain.

Buildings and structures that block or reflect signals
Tall buildings can obstruct or reflect signals used for positioning. A parking garage can produce the same effect because concrete, steel and multiple levels make it difficult to determine where you are. If the circle is large while you are beside or inside one of these structures, move to a more open area and watch whether the circle contracts.
A gray or missing dot
If the dot is gray or does not appear, Maps may be displaying the last location it was able to determine rather than a fresh estimate. Treat that point as stale until the service can obtain a current reading.
Why an address label beside the dot can mislead you
Maps may attach the nearest known address or road name to an estimated point. That label is not proof that the blue dot is exactly at that address, nor that the map database has placed the address incorrectly. Diagnose the blue dot and the searched listing separately.

Google’s current computer-help guidance uses the following sequence. These are browser instructions; they are not presented as the exact menu paths for Android or iPhone.
- Allow location access for Google Maps. In the browser’s site-permission controls, make sure the Maps page is allowed to access your location. If permission was previously denied, change it and reload the page.
- Reload the Maps tab. Refresh the page after changing permission so the browser requests a new position.
- Check the internet connection. A weak or interrupted connection can prevent Maps from obtaining or updating its estimate. Restore a stable connection and reload again.
- Check the permission again. Browser settings can have separate controls for the site and for the computer’s location service. Confirm that neither one is blocking Maps.
- Restart the computer. If the point is still wrong after permission and connection checks, restart the computer and open Maps again.
Test the estimate away from obstructions
When possible, leave a tall building or parking structure and check the blue dot outdoors or in a more open area. If the light-blue uncertainty circle shrinks, the earlier error was likely caused by the environment rather than a wrong street address in Google’s database.
Use the circle as a diagnostic, not a promise
The circle is useful for deciding whether Maps is confident in its estimate. It is not a guaranteed boundary that the device will never exceed, and it does not identify a particular entrance. Compare the dot and circle again after moving to an open area instead of assuming that a nearby road label is the exact position.
What these steps do not establish
They cannot guarantee door-level accuracy. Google’s blue dot remains an estimate, and the size of its uncertainty circle is the on-screen indication of confidence. The available computer guidance does not provide a universal accuracy number for every device, country or building.

Correct a wrong searched address or public place pin
If searching for a known address or place consistently produces the wrong marker, treat it as map data that needs a public correction. Google says people can add or edit addresses and adjust pin locations.
- Open Google Maps on a computer and search for the address.
- Select Suggest an edit.
- Choose Wrong pin location or address.
- Enter the corrected address, move the location information as requested, or describe the accurate placement.
- Submit the correction.
Google reviews submitted edits before changing the public map. A submission is not a guarantee of approval or an immediate update, and Google’s help material does not promise a review time or specify universal acceptance criteria. Do not assume that a pin will change within a particular number of days.
What to verify before submitting
- Check the street number, street name, locality and postal details rather than moving a marker based only on a nearby landmark.
- Distinguish the property’s entrance from its center, a rear service road or an adjacent parcel.
- Use a visible road, building entrance or other stable reference when describing the correction.
- If the address itself is ambiguous, prepare explicit coordinates or a Plus Code for the intended point.
GPS.gov also directs users to report address and map errors to the map provider and describes moving a Google Maps pin to the correct spot. That advice concerns correcting the provider’s data, not repairing a device’s live location estimate.
Geocoding is not equally precise everywhere
Google Maps Platform documentation cautions that geocoded accuracy varies by country. When a search returns a location, judge the returned location type against what you actually need: a broad locality may be adequate for a general destination, while a building entrance or delivery point requires a more specific, verified point. A plausible-looking result is not automatically accurate enough for every use.

Check a pin that you dropped manually
A press-and-hold gesture on a touchscreen, or a map click in a browser, selects a point at the chosen map coordinate. The resulting address label may be the nearest address rather than the exact entrance, unit or trailhead you intend to share.
Verify the selected point
- Zoom in until you can distinguish the building, road, parcel or path around the marker.
- Compare the point with the intended entrance or meeting location, not merely the nearest street name.
- Move the map or drop a new pin if the first selection is offset.
- Before sharing, copy the displayed coordinates or Plus Code so the recipient can identify the precise selected point.
Google’s Plus Codes announcement describes this same workflow: tap and hold to drop a pin, then use the resulting code in Maps to locate and navigate to that point. A map label next to your selection does not by itself establish that navigation will end at a particular door.
A reliable handoff for urgent directions
After verifying the marker, send the location identifier and a plain-language description together. For example, identify whether the point is the main gate, a parking entrance or a trailhead. This gives the recipient context if the map displays a nearby road name or if the chosen point is on a property rather than at its public entrance.

Use coordinates when an address is unreliable
A coordinate pair states latitude and longitude directly. It is useful when a rural property, construction site, trail entrance or new development has no dependable street address, or when several entrances share one postal address.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Strength: the recipient receives an explicit geographic point rather than an interpretation of a street label.
- Trade-off: coordinates are longer and easier to mistype or transpose.
- Accuracy qualification: coordinates identify the point you provide; they do not make a phone’s live GPS estimate more accurate.
When sending coordinates, include enough decimal places for the intended use and identify what the point means—for example, “main gate” or “parking entrance.” The coordinate itself does not prove that the road is drivable or that the point is accessible.
Use a Plus Code for a short, shareable location
Plus Codes encode a map area in a compact form that can be copied and shared in Google Maps or Google Search. Google says no extra app is required. A full code identifies its location globally; a short local code must be paired with the town, city or other locality so Maps can resolve it in the correct region.
How to share one correctly
- Drop a pin at the intended point or open the location’s details in Google Maps.
- Copy the Plus Code shown for that point.
- If the code is shortened, add the locality in the same message—for example, the town and country.
- Tell the recipient to enter the code in Google Maps or Google Search and confirm that the displayed point matches the intended entrance.
Google describes Plus Codes as usable offline when the relevant region has been downloaded as an Offline Map. The service documentation states: Plus Codes are free for anyone to use, forever.
What the Plus Code dimensions mean
On Google’s undated Plus Codes support page, two characters after the plus sign define an area smaller than 14 × 14 meters, while three characters after the plus sign define an area smaller than 3 × 3 meters. Those are the dimensions of the encoded area, not a promise about your phone’s GPS accuracy and not a guarantee that navigation will guide someone to a particular door.
Coordinates versus Plus Codes
| Consideration | Coordinate pair | Plus Code |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Explicit latitude and longitude | Compact code representing an area |
| Sharing | Longer and prone to digit-transcription errors | Shorter and easy to copy; short codes need a locality |
| Best use | Technical directions, records and systems that accept latitude/longitude | Human-to-human sharing in Google Maps or Search |
| Offline consideration | Can be recorded as numbers, but map display still depends on the recipient’s tools | Google says it can be used offline when the relevant region is downloaded as an Offline Map |
| Accuracy claim | Represents the point supplied; does not improve the sensor reading | Code-area dimensions do not equal phone GPS accuracy |
Neither method has a universal precision advantage for a phone-generated fix. Choose the format that the recipient can enter reliably and pair it with a plain-language description of the entrance or meeting point.
A practical decision path
- The blue dot is displaced and has a large pale-blue circle: treat this as an uncertain current-location estimate. Check browser permission and internet access, reload, move away from obstructions, and restart if needed.
- The dot is gray or missing: Maps may be showing the last location it could determine. Restore permission and connectivity, then reload before judging the point.
- A searched address or business marker is wrong for everyone: use Suggest an edit → Wrong pin location or address and submit the corrected details.
- Your manually dropped point is near, but not at, the intended entrance: zoom in and select again; share coordinates or a Plus Code after checking the exact spot.
- The address is ambiguous or unavailable: send a full coordinate pair or a Plus Code with the locality, plus a description such as “east gate.”
Common mistakes that make a pin seem wrong
Editing the public address when only the blue dot is inaccurate
A live-location error and a database error are different. Submitting a map edit will not repair a browser that lacks location permission, and moving the blue dot is not a public correction to an address record.

Assuming the nearest label is the selected point
After dropping a pin, the nearest address can describe the surrounding area rather than the exact coordinate. Always zoom in and inspect the point before sharing it.
Sending a short Plus Code without its locality
Short codes are local references. Without the town or locality, the recipient may not be able to resolve the intended place. Include the locality whenever you send a shortened code.

Expecting a submitted edit to appear immediately
Google does not promise an approval time in the cited help material. Keep using a coordinate or Plus Code for urgent directions while the public correction is pending.
Treating code-area size as GPS performance
The less-than-14-by-14-meter and less-than-3-by-3-meter figures describe Plus Code areas. They do not measure how accurately a particular phone, browser or building environment can determine its live position.
Using a general geocoded result for a precise task
A search result that identifies the right town or street may still be too broad for a delivery, emergency meeting point or specific entrance. Because geocoded accuracy varies by country, inspect the returned point and verify it at high zoom before relying on it.

Google’s documentation explains the blue dot’s uncertainty circle, environmental causes such as tall buildings and parking structures, browser troubleshooting, the public correction route, and Plus Code behavior. The cited material does not provide a named, dated statistic for how often pins are wrong, a universal GPS accuracy figure, a guaranteed correction success rate or a standard review duration. Any claim that every correction will be accepted or that a pin will move within a fixed time would go beyond that evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Google Maps blue dot in the wrong place?
The blue dot is an estimate of your current location. A large light-blue circle means Maps is uncertain; tall buildings and parking structures can interfere. Allow browser location access, check the internet connection, reload Maps, move to a more open area and restart the computer if necessary.
What does a gray or missing blue dot mean?
Maps may be showing the last location it was able to determine rather than a fresh reading. Restore location permission and connectivity, reload the page and reassess the point.
How do I report a wrong address or public pin?
On a computer, search for the address in Google Maps, select Suggest an edit, choose Wrong pin location or address, enter the correction and submit it.
Recommended Free Tools
How long will a Google Maps pin correction take?
Google’s help material does not promise a review duration or immediate approval. Keep using coordinates or a Plus Code for time-sensitive directions while the edit is pending.
Should I send coordinates or a Plus Code?
Coordinates are explicit latitude and longitude and work well for technical directions or records. Plus Codes are shorter for human sharing in Google Maps or Search; a short code must include the town or other locality.
Are Plus Codes free and usable offline?
Google says Plus Codes are free for anyone to use, forever. They can be used offline when the relevant region has been downloaded as an Offline Map, and no extra app is required.
Do Plus Code dimensions prove my phone is accurate?
No. Google describes areas smaller than 14 × 14 meters for two characters after the plus sign and smaller than 3 × 3 meters for three characters. Those are encoded-area dimensions, not a measurement of live GPS accuracy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The Bottom Line
Identify the marker first: blue dot, public listing or manually selected point. Fix a blue-dot estimate with permission, connectivity, a reload, a clearer environment and, if needed, a restart. Report a wrong public address through Suggest an edit → Wrong pin location or address. For reliable sharing, verify the point at high zoom and send coordinates or a Plus Code with its locality.
