Optional game route: the original Master Chief journey
If you want to experience the source games after or before the show, use Halo: The Master Chief Collection as the main entry point. Xbox describes the collection as containing Master Chief campaigns and specifically identifies Halo: Reach as a prequel set just before the first Halo game.

Do you need to play Minecraft first?
No required game sequence is established.
