If a dash cam’s parking mode does not record, check three things first: whether parking mode is enabled, whether the camera still has power after the ignition is off, and whether its power setup can detect that the vehicle has been parked. A camera that shuts down immediately, keeps recording normally, or starts parking recording and later stops points to different likely causes.
Read the camera’s behavior first
| What happens when you switch off the ignition | What to check |
|---|---|
| The camera shuts off immediately | Check whether its power source stays live with the vehicle off and whether the hardwire kit’s constant-power lead is connected to an appropriate constant circuit. |
| The camera keeps recording normally | Check whether the ACC lead is connected to a circuit that switches off with the ignition. If ACC remains live, the camera may not recognize the change to parked status. |
| Parking mode starts, then recording stops | Check the parking timer and voltage cutoff. Either may end recording; a low-voltage cutoff may also be reached sooner depending on the vehicle battery and other loads. |
These clues narrow the problem but do not identify a circuit or fault on their own. Wiring, available modes, and menu labels vary by camera and vehicle.

1. Make sure parking mode is enabled
Open the camera’s recording settings and confirm parking mode is turned on. Check which mode is selected—such as motion detection, impact detection, or time-lapse—and make sure any required motion or impact detection settings are enabled. The available modes and their names depend on the model. Thinkware notes that a correctly hardwired camera still will not switch to parking mode if the feature is disabled: Thinkware’s parking-mode guidance.
2. Check whether the power setup can switch modes
Parking mode requires more than a camera that remains powered. Many hardwired systems use a constant-power feed to keep the camera supplied and an ignition-switched ACC signal to tell it when the vehicle is off. If either connection is wrong, the camera may shut down or remain in normal recording rather than switching modes. BlackVue explains the distinction between switched and constant power in its parking-mode troubleshooting guidance; VIOFO describes BAT and ACC roles in its parking-mode troubleshooting article.

It comes with a free 128GB microSD card and offers advanced features such as an f1.5 aperture, motion detection, G-sensor, seamless loop recording, emergency video lock, screen saver, live speed and compass direction, voice guidance, ring of threads for optional CPL filter, a built-in supercapacitor for extended product life, support for up to 1TB microSD cards, and many more.
A live cigarette-lighter or 12V outlet may keep a dash cam on without giving it the signal it needs to change recording modes. Depending on the model, parking mode may require a compatible hardwire kit, OBD-II cable, or external battery pack. Check the exact camera’s support documentation to confirm which power methods it supports.
Verify connections without guessing
- Follow the camera and hardwire-kit instructions to identify the constant-power, ACC, and ground connections.
- Do not rely on wire color as a universal guide. Manufacturers may use different markings and instructions for different kits.
- Do not guess which fuse or circuit to use. Circuit identification may require suitable electrical testing; if you are not qualified to do that safely, have a vehicle-electronics or dash-cam installer check the setup.
For example, Thinkware advises checking cable markings and testing circuits rather than assuming wire colors identify their function. Garmin’s owner manual recommends an experienced installer with electrical-system knowledge for installation: Garmin owner manual.

3. Check the timer and voltage cutoff
Some cameras or hardwire kits stop parking recording when a configured timer expires or battery voltage falls below a cutoff. These protections can explain why recording begins but does not continue for as long as expected. Cutoff values and behavior are product-specific; do not copy a setting from another camera or treat one voltage as universally safe. Check the exact product manual, or ask an installer if you are unsure which setting to use. VIOFO’s guidance describes cutoff options and notes a detection tolerance for its own products: VIOFO parking-mode troubleshooting.

4. Check the card and recording setup last
If the power connections, settings, timer, and cutoff do not explain the issue, check whether the camera records reliably in driving mode and whether its memory card is on the manufacturer’s supported list. For multi-channel cameras, simplifying channel recording can help isolate a recording problem. Follow the instructions for the exact model before changing settings or buying a replacement card; a new card will not fix incorrect wiring. VIOFO lists card compatibility and recording configuration among its troubleshooting checks in its support article.

When to get installation help
Use a qualified installer if you cannot confidently identify a constant-power circuit, an ignition-switched ACC circuit, and ground, or if the camera’s behavior remains unexplained after you check its settings and documentation. The correct wiring depends on the vehicle and equipment; professional help is safer than probing unfamiliar circuits or selecting a fuse by guesswork.
