The symptom alone cannot identify the fault: check the exact device and measure the timing-capacitor voltage through the event.
Start by confirming which logic function the circuit needs
CD4050B and CD4049UB are not interchangeable just because they are related CMOS parts. Texas Instruments identifies the CD4050B as a noninverting buffer and the CD4049UB as an inverting buffer. Replacing one with the other reverses the output relative to the input. That can change when a transistor or relay driver turns on, even if the timing capacitor reaches the same voltage.

Check the full part marking and trace the intended signal: should the output go high or low when the timing node crosses its switching point? Verify the circuit against the datasheet for the exact suffix and package you have. TI lists a 3-V to 18-V operating range for CD4050B; do not assume that range or other specifications apply to every related part or manufacturer.
How an RC delay can vary
An RC timer measures the time it takes a changing capacitor voltage to cross an input threshold. Its delay depends not only on resistance and capacitance, but also on the capacitor’s initial voltage, the supply voltage, and the actual switching threshold. A nominal RC calculation is therefore not, by itself, a precision timing specification.

The project example from Electronics For You uses a 470-µF capacitor and a 1-MΩ potentiometer, with an adjustable interval stated as approximately three to fifteen minutes. Those are example values and a stated range for that circuit—not a general accuracy or repeatability guarantee for CD4050 or CD4049 circuits. The article notes that switching threshold can vary with supply voltage, temperature, manufacturer, and device characteristics. No authoritative figure for CD4050/CD4049 timer accuracy, retrigger rate, or failure frequency is established here.
Check whether the capacitor resets between cycles
A new timing interval can be shorter or longer if the capacitor retains charge from the previous cycle. If it lacks a reliable discharge path, the next cycle starts from a different voltage and reaches the switching threshold at a different time. The Electronics For You example includes a switch/discharge path for resetting the capacitor for reuse.

- With power removed, inspect the circuit. Check electrolytic-capacitor polarity, capacitor and resistor connections, potentiometer wiring, reset switch, ground return, and solder joints. Compare them with the schematic rather than relying on component appearance.
- Measure the timing node from power-up through the unexpected event. Use a meter for a slow-changing node or an oscilloscope to capture the voltage over time. Note the starting voltage, whether it falls during reset, and the voltage at each output transition.
- If the starting voltage changes between cycles, trace the discharge path. Look for an open or miswired reset connection and for other paths that could keep the capacitor charged. Do not infer a failed capacitor solely from an incorrect delay.
Compare the supply and timing-node waveforms
Switching behavior can shift when the supply changes, and a threshold that differs from the assumed value changes the crossing time. Measure the supply alongside the timing node during the event. If the supply sags or jumps when a relay or other load switches, that may coincide with a changed transition; the timing-node waveform is needed to determine whether it explains the symptom.

That is a useful troubleshooting check, not proof that the relay caused a particular retrigger.

Consider hysteresis for slow or noisy transitions
If a slowly rising or falling signal lingers near a switching region, small disturbances can make the output switch ambiguously. A Schmitt-trigger input has hysteresis: its switching point differs for rising and falling signals, helping reject small fluctuations near a transition. TI describes the CD40106B as suitable for slow or noisy inputs and documents monostable and astable applications.
For the CD40106B, TI’s 2017 datasheet revision F gives typical hysteresis voltages of 0.9 V at VDD=5 V, 2.3 V at VDD=10 V, and 3.5 V at VDD=15 V. These figures describe that Schmitt-trigger device; they are not CD4050 or CD4049 switching thresholds. A CD40106B may be a redesign option when transitions are slow or noisy, but it is not a guaranteed drop-in replacement: check the logic function, pinout, supply, and circuit requirements.

Also check unused CMOS inputs. TI’s CD40106B datasheet warns that floating digital inputs can leave operation undefined and advises tying unused inputs to a defined high or low level. Apply the guidance for the exact device in use by checking its own datasheet.
Separate timer retrigger from relay chatter
Relay chatter and a timer retrigger can occur together, but they are not the same diagnosis. In the project example, a capacitor is used to help prevent relay chatter, while a diode protects the transistor from back-EMF generated by the relay coil. These components address relay behavior and inductive kick; their presence does not establish that a relay is responsible for every timing fault.

If the relay changes state at the same time as the timing node or supply is disturbed, record both signals during switching. That can help distinguish a timing-node or supply disturbance from a logic-polarity or reset-path problem.
Work safely around relay circuits
The Electronics For You example describes a 5-to-12-V project and warns that relay contacts may carry mains voltage. The example is not a certified appliance-safety design. If contacts connect to mains, enclosure, insulation, earthing, fuse protection, and adequate spacing are essential; do not touch or probe an energized circuit unless qualified to do so. Disconnect power before inspecting or changing wiring.
