A 60W charger can charge two phones at different speeds because 60W is the charger’s maximum available output—not the amount every connected phone draws. Each phone has its own charging limit and protocol requirements, and the cable and charging conditions can further affect the rate.
What the 60W rating actually means
The wattage printed on a charger describes its maximum capability under supported conditions. A phone draws power according to its own design; a higher-rated charger does not force that full power into a phone. As Google puts it in its Pixel charging guidance, “Higher wattage usually means faster charging but your phone must also support the higher speed.”

So a 60W charger may be able to supply more power than one phone can accept, while another phone may be designed to use a higher charging rate. The charger and phone must also support compatible charging profiles: the number of watts alone does not establish that they can negotiate the phone’s fastest mode.

Charging capability varies by exact model, even within one brand. Apple’s fast-charge guidance, published September 18, 2026, gives different adapter and cable requirements for recent iPhones:

| iPhone models | Apple’s stated fast-charge setup and result |
|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max | Up to 50% in around 15 minutes with the included USB-C cable and Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max, or a comparable 60W-capable-or-greater adapter using AVS and USB-PD 3.2. Apple says its July 2026 testing used preproduction devices. |
| iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max | Up to 50% in around 20 minutes with a 40W adapter or higher. |
| iPhone 17e and iPhone Air | Up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher. |
| Earlier iPhone models covered by Apple’s adapter guidance | Fast charging uses USB-PD and an 18W-or-greater USB-C adapter, as described in Apple’s iPhone power-adapter guidance. |
These are Apple-specific requirements and manufacturer-reported results, not a universal rule for all phones or an independent comparison between models. Apple says charge time varies with adapter, settings, usage and environmental factors, and actual results will vary.
Google’s Pixel guidance likewise distinguishes supported adapters and phone capabilities. It lists Google 30W, 45W or 67W USB-C chargers, PPS adapters rated 30W or more, and other USB-PD adapters rated 15W or more. It also says certain named Pixel models can charge at 30W or more; those details apply to the Pixel models covered on that page, not to every Android phone.

The charger must offer a compatible charging profile
USB-C chargers can support different voltage and current profiles, and phones rely on compatible protocols to charge at their intended rates. A charger marked 60W may still fail to provide the particular profile a phone needs for its fastest mode. For example, Apple specifies AVS-capable USB-PD 3.2 for the cited iPhone 18 Pro fast-charge setup; the wattage rating alone does not confirm that a charger meets that requirement.
Google’s Pixel 11 safety guide describes different USB-PD/PPS voltage and current ratings for Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro compared with Pixel 11 Pro XL. That is another reason to check the requirements for the exact model instead of assuming that one charger’s headline output works identically with every phone.

The cable and shared ports can change the result
Cable rating and connector
The cable is part of the charging setup. A cable may not be suitable for the phone’s highest supported charging mode, even if the adapter can provide enough power. Apple specifies a 60W-capable cable for the cited iPhone 18 Pro fast-charge mode. Google also cautions that cable and adapter choice can change Pixel charging speed.
Other devices using the charger
On a multiport charger, connecting a second device can reduce the maximum power available to the phone. Google’s Pixel Flex Dual Port 67W charger information describes PD, PPS and AVS output profiles and says the maximum per-port output drops when two devices are connected. A charger’s total rating therefore does not necessarily represent the power available from each port at the same time.

Temperature, battery state and use affect charging speed
Even a compatible phone, adapter and cable may not charge at one fixed rate throughout a session. Charging speed can vary with battery state, settings, phone use and environmental conditions. A phone that becomes too warm may slow or pause charging; Google notes this behavior in its Pixel charging guidance. These factors can make two charging sessions differ even when the same charger is used.

How to check why one phone is slower
- Identify the exact phone model. Check its maximum wired charging capability and the manufacturer’s stated fast-charge requirements.
- Check the charger’s profiles, not just its wattage. Confirm that it supports the protocol and output profile the phone requires, such as the relevant USB-PD, PPS or AVS mode.
- Verify the cable. Check that its connector and power rating suit the phone’s intended charging mode.
- Check for shared output. If the adapter has multiple ports, disconnect other devices and see whether the phone’s charging rate changes.
- Consider the conditions. Battery state, temperature, settings and active use can all affect the observed speed.
A 60W charger can still be useful with a phone that has a lower charging limit, but it will not raise that phone’s maximum. To get the fastest supported rate, the phone, charger profile and cable must be compatible, and operating conditions must allow the phone to accept that rate.
