Steam Families lets eligible household members access games owned by one another, but it does not give them ownership. A shared title remains in the purchaser’s account, and one copy can support only one family member playing that title at a time. Buying another copy adds it to the buyer’s collection and creates another simultaneous-play slot.
How Steam Families differs from buying a game
Steam Families is the current system for game sharing and parental controls; it replaced the older Steam Family Sharing and Family View features. Steam describes the games as shared access, not transferred ownership: “Ownership of games remains with the purchaser; new purchases appear in your collection.” See Steam’s Steam Families User Guide & FAQ.

Can two family members play the same game at once?
Not with a single copy. Steam’s example says that if two people want to play Portal 2 at the same time, another family member needs to purchase a copy. If the family has two copies of a title, two members can play that title simultaneously. When multiple copies exist, Steam lets the player choose which copy to use; if a copy is already occupied, Steam may select another available copy. If none is free, wait until one is available or buy another copy. Steam explains this in its family FAQ.

Eligibility is set title by title and can change. Publishers may opt out, and some games are excluded for technical, account, or regional reasons. Steam lists content that cannot be shared in its Steam Families FAQ.

Before relying on access, check the specific game’s current sharing eligibility and any account, subscription, region, operating-system, publisher, or privacy restrictions.
What happens to saves, achievements, DLC, and offline access?
Saves and achievements
Achievements are tied to each player’s Steam account. Save behavior varies by game, so do not assume progress will transfer between accounts or work identically for every shared title. Steam also notes that saves may not work across versions with different DLC.

DLC
A family member can use DLC owned by another player only when the publisher has marked that DLC shareable. Check the game’s details and the relevant content rather than assuming all add-ons are included.

Who can join a Steam Family?
Steam says Steam Families is intended for up to six close family members in one household. Participation requirements may change as Steam monitors use. Adults who leave a family generally must wait one year from joining the previous family before creating or joining a different one. Steam says an adult may rejoin their last family without waiting if it has fewer than six members; family slots also have a cooldown after a member leaves. Check Steam’s current FAQ for the rules that apply to your account.

When should you buy another copy?
Buy a separate copy when you want the game in your own collection, when another family member needs to play the same title at the same time and the family has no spare copy, or when the game is not eligible for sharing. If you are funding someone else’s purchase, Steam offers digital Steam Gift Cards; after redemption, the Wallet funds can be used to buy a game or add-on. Do not share account credentials as a workaround: Steam advises users not to share accounts or passwords and directs people who want to share games to its family-library feature at Steam Family Library Sharing.
