What position does Carlos Baleba play?

His primary position is central midfielder. Manchester United categorizes him as a midfielder, and Premier League analysis of his Brighton performances describes his work in the centre of midfield. He is best understood as a high-energy midfielder whose defensive activity and ability to carry the ball help his team move from winning possession to attacking.

Out of possession: pressing and winning the ball

Baleba presses opponents, competes for duels and recovers loose balls. Those actions can disrupt an opponent’s build-up and give his team a platform to attack. In a Premier League analysis published on 23 February 2025, he had made 36 interceptions in 20 starts in the 2024/25 season, the second-highest total among the midfielders listed. Among midfielders with at least 15 starts in that analysis, his rates of 7.05 duels won and 6.62 ball recoveries per 90 minutes ranked fourth.

In possession: carrying forward, not just breaking up play

Baleba’s contribution does not end when he wins the ball. He can carry it forward to help turn a defensive action into a transition, and he offers distribution from midfield. Manchester United says he ranked fourth among Premier League midfielders for progressive ball carries per 90 minutes in 2024/25. The club also records 31 Premier League appearances for him in 2025/26, when Brighton qualified for the UEFA Conference League. These are season-specific records, not a 2026/27 performance sample or a forecast of his role at United.

United’s 2026 profile also reports that, in 2025/26, Baleba ranked in the top eight per cent for combined tackles and interceptions and the top one per cent for second balls won. Those are club-reported comparisons across players for that season, not figures from the Premier League’s February 2025 analysis.

Centre-back: occasional cover, not his established role

Brighton used Baleba at centre-back in pre-season and against Leicester, but he described the position as unfamiliar. In a Brighton interview published on 30 April 2025, he said: “For me, centre-back is not so new because I played there in pre-season and I played there against Leicester.” He also credited captain Lewis Dunk’s guidance. That experience shows he has covered the position; it does not make centre-back his primary role.

Lille

Before moving to England, Baleba played for Lille in France. Brighton’s 24 April 2025 profile says he had made six league starts for Lille before arriving in England in summer 2023.

Brighton

Baleba joined Brighton at 19. He made 15 Premier League starts in his first season; by the time of the club’s April 2025 profile, he had made 24 league starts. Brighton described him as a near-regular under head coach Fabian Hürzeler. In a separate Brighton interview on 7 September 2024, Baleba said: “I have ambitions to be a starter in this team but it is not just starting games which will make me into a great player.” He also emphasized focus, mentality, hard work and helping the team win.

Baleba scored a memorable winner against West Ham while at Brighton. Reflecting on the goal in his 30 April 2025 interview, he said: “Before I shot, there was nothing in my head. So I just thought, go on – shoot,” and, after the ball went in, “wow! I couldn’t believe it.”

What is the clearest way to describe Baleba’s game?

The strongest evidence points to an energetic central midfielder who presses, contests duels, recovers possession and drives forward with the ball. His numbers and Brighton-era examples support a ball-winning and carrying profile, alongside useful distribution. They do not establish that he is a finished all-rounder or specify how Manchester United will deploy him in 2026/27.
