Before you start a college fantasy quarterback, check your league’s scoring, whether the player is expected to handle a full game, his recent passing and rushing opportunities, and the matchup and game environment. Recheck availability and lineup lock time before kickoff. This checklist helps compare candidates for your league; without your league settings, candidate names, and this week’s slate, there is no single reliable starter recommendation.
1. Start with your league’s scoring and lineup rules
A quarterback’s value depends on what your league rewards and penalizes. Before comparing players, verify the current rules in your own league for passing touchdowns and yards, interceptions, fumbles, rushing production, and any receiving points. Also confirm quarterback eligibility and when lineups lock.

For example, College Football Fantasy’s current rules describe 4 points per passing touchdown, 1 point per 25 passing yards, and a 1-point deduction for an interception or lost fumble; rushing and receiving production also count. Those are that ruleset’s values, not a universal college fantasy scoring standard. Its rules page notes, “Each scoring week has its own game dates.” Review College Football Fantasy’s rules, then verify the settings and deadlines shown in your league.

CBS Sports’ rules page illustrates variations such as an FBS-versus-non-FBS scoring adjustment and a player-team kickoff deadline; its examples include legacy dates, so treat it as evidence of variation, not as current guidance for your league. Check the platform’s rules information and your league commissioner’s settings rather than importing another site’s scoring.

2. Confirm the player’s role and availability
Find out whether the quarterback is expected to start and whether his role looks secure. A depth-chart listing is useful, but it does not by itself establish that he will play every snap or retain the job for the whole game. Check for a competition, rotation, recent snap usage, and late injury or availability news.
Yahoo’s college fantasy points-against tool bases future-week player listings on depth charts, so use it as a starting point for finding players—not as confirmation of a full-game role. See Yahoo’s QB fantasy points-against data.

Availability reporting also depends on the competition and season. For the 2025–26 College Football Playoff only, participating schools must provide public availability reports, with daily updates and a final report 90 minutes before game time. That policy does not establish a reporting requirement for every regular-season game. Read the CFP’s 2025–26 availability-reporting policy.

3. Compare opportunity, not just last week’s points
Look at how each candidate generated production: passing attempts and output, rushing volume, and any receiving involvement that your league scores. Recent fantasy totals show what happened; opportunity can help you judge whether a similar role is likely to continue.

Rushing can change a quarterback’s fantasy floor when the scoring system rewards rushing yards or touchdowns. A player with designed carries or regular scrambles may contribute in ways a pocket passer does not. CollegeFFB says its projections consider usage inputs such as rushing volume and receiving involvement, because similar box-score yardage can come from different kinds of opportunity. Read how CollegeFFB describes its rankings and projections.
4. Use the opponent matchup as context
Check how the opponent has performed against quarterbacks, but do not treat a points-against rank as a forecast by itself. The figure may reflect a limited number of games, changing opponents, or different player roles. Yahoo provides position-specific college fantasy points-against data; combine it with the opponent’s strength and the candidate’s current workload rather than reading the rank in isolation.

Projection approaches can also adjust a player’s baseline for opponent strength and expected game environment. CollegeFFB describes using those factors alongside player usage. They add context, but they do not establish what an individual quarterback will score.

5. Consider how the game could unfold
Think about whether the team is expected to score and whether the game could become one-sided. A likely lead or deficit can affect passing attempts and rushing chances differently, so consider how a plausible script fits the player’s role rather than assuming every quarterback benefits from a high-scoring game.

Game totals and point spreads are estimates of scoring environment and likely script, not guarantees. CollegeFFB describes using market signals such as these as additional projection inputs; they should inform, not replace, evidence about the quarterback’s role and opportunity.
6. Compare both candidates on the same checklist
For a two-quarterback decision, assess each player against the same criteria. This prevents a memorable matchup or last week’s points from dominating the choice.
- Your league’s scoring: How are passing, rushing, receiving, turnovers, and touchdowns valued?
- Role and availability: Is the starter confirmed, and is a competition, rotation, or availability concern present?
- Recent opportunity: What do passing attempts, rushing volume, and any scored receiving work suggest about the role?
- Opponent: What does quarterback points-against data add, and what context might make that number misleading?
- Game environment: What scoring and game-script estimates suggest, and how might they affect this player’s opportunities?
If you consult projections, use them to compare candidates, not as promises of exact totals. CollegeFFB says its rankings can change during the week as injuries and other information change, and describes projections as estimates based on what is known at the time. Its stated 137 FBS teams is the service’s description of its projection context, not an independently verified count of all FBS schools.
7. Recheck before lineup lock
Make one final pass close to kickoff: confirm the expected starter and availability, check for role changes, revisit the opponent and game context, and verify your league’s actual lock time. Information can change during the week, so a comparison made earlier may no longer reflect the player’s situation.
For weekly decision language, Yahoo’s college fantasy coverage uses formats such as “Start ’Em, Sit ’Em” and “Start/Sit.” Its Week 3 2026 article is an example of that usage, not a current recommendation for a different week. See Yahoo’s Week 3 start/sit article.
