Check it before sharing, and use the same selector on a post that is already live to review or change its audience. That change applies only to that post—not to future posts, which use your default audience. Tags, public-group activity, reels, stories, and public profile details have separate visibility considerations.
Choose an audience for a profile post
Before sharing, look for the audience selector under or beside your profile name. Facebook’s examples include Public, Friends, and Only me. Other choices, such as Friends except… or a selected list, may be available depending on the content and profile. - Public: The post can be seen by people beyond your Facebook friends, including people who are not logged in.
- Friends: The post is limited to your Facebook friends, subject to possible audience expansion from tags.
- Only me: The post is visible only to you.
- Friends except…: If offered, this shares with friends while excluding the people you select.
- Selected list: If offered, this limits sharing to the people on that list.
Confirm the selector’s label each time rather than assuming it retained the audience you want. Choices can differ by profile or content type.
Change who can see a post after sharing
- Open the post on your profile or wherever it appears.
- Select the audience indicator beside or under your name.
- Choose the new audience shown in the menu.
The new selection changes the audience for that post only. Facebook says your next post uses the default audience set in privacy settings. Facebook Help Center: Deciding Who Can See Your Facebook Post

Set the default audience for future posts
To review the broader privacy controls, open Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and visibility. Facebook groups controls here for posts, profile details, stories, reels, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and other areas. Some options vary by profile type. Facebook also notes that under-18 users may receive more private defaults in some regions, and that people who sign up under 16 are opted into suggested settings for a more private experience; these are not universal defaults for every age and location. Changing the default affects future posts; it does not replace the audience setting on posts you have already shared. Review an individual post separately if you want to change its visibility.

Why someone may see a post beyond the audience you expected
Someone is tagged
A tag links to the tagged person’s profile and may add the post to that person’s profile. Facebook says the post may be visible to the audience you chose plus friends of the person tagged. This is a potential expansion, not a guarantee that every tagged post has the same audience calculation. Facebook Help Center: Tagging
The post or comment is in a public group
Posts and comments shared in public groups are public and can be seen by anyone. A personal profile’s post audience setting does not make public-group activity private. Facebook Help Center: Deciding Who Can See Your Facebook Post

You are looking at a reel or story
Reels and stories have their own audience controls. Facebook lists reel choices such as Public, Friends, and Friends except…, and lets users set a default for future reels as well as adjust a reel individually. If a reel is shared from Instagram and you have not chosen a Facebook reel default, Facebook’s default may be Friends for a private Instagram account or Public for a public Instagram account. Instagram followers and Facebook friends are not necessarily the same people. Check the controls for the specific format rather than assuming your profile-post default applies. Some profile information remains public
Facebook says your current profile photo and cover photo are public and may appear in feeds and alongside your name in different places. Older profile and cover photos may have adjustable privacy. Facebook also describes information shared with a Public audience as public information; review your settings so the audience matches what you intend to share. Facebook Help Center: Privacy

Changing whether outside search engines may link to your profile does not immediately remove results already indexed or cached. The search engine must update or remove its stored result, so do not assume a changed Facebook setting makes an existing result disappear at once. Facebook Help Center: Search Engines

Use Facebook’s Privacy Checkup to review key privacy choices. Activity Log and Manage Activity can help you inspect or manage older content. Facebook also provides a separate control for limiting the visibility of previous posts; this is distinct from choosing the audience for a new post. Facebook Help Center: Privacy Checkup

- Check the audience label before you publish.
- For an existing post, open its audience indicator to inspect or change that post.
- Review the default audience separately if you want future posts to use a different setting.
- Check tagged posts and public-group activity independently.
- Review story and reel audiences in their own controls.
