Its canvas can place diagrams and agent traces beside code, making relationships easier to inspect than a list of files alone. But the product’s documentation does not establish how it converts that spatial layout into an agent’s context. That distinction matters: a canvas may help orient an agent, but it cannot guarantee that the agent sees every relevant dependency or global rule.
What Whiteboard does today
Whiteboard’s project README describes a desktop app that connects to Claude Code, Codex, or another coding agent. The agent receives an SDK to draw on the in-app canvas. The documented starting workflow is to download and open the app, connect an agent, then ask it to review a branch against the current main branch. Whiteboard’s README is the source for these product capabilities and limits.

The goal is to make a software review more than a sequence of text diffs: diagrams can link to the code behind them, and a decision log can connect requirements with agent traces and autonomous choices. The README also describes a semantic, AST-aware diff viewer written in Rust, with VS Code keybindings and LSP support for navigation. Large added functions can be summarized as pseudocode, while tests and documentation changes can be collapsed or hidden. The diff behavior is customizable through a WASM-based plugin system.
These are documented review and architecture features, not evidence that the canvas is itself a complete representation of the codebase. Whiteboard currently cannot edit files in-app, and a single review does not yet handle multi-repository work well. Shared reviews do not automatically reflect later changes for recipients; the review must be shared again.

The README says Whiteboard runs against local checkouts and is MIT-licensed, and that it will remain self-hostable. A hosted product for teams is planned, rather than documented as an available feature. The project says anonymous telemetry excludes code, diffs, Whiteboard text, prompts, and model output, and can be disabled. That is the project’s privacy statement, not an independent audit.
Why spatial context could change what an agent sees
Code already contains relationships: imports, calls, data flow, and shared constraints. A canvas can add a different kind of signal by making some of those relationships explicit and visible together. A diagram may place a service near its dependencies and connect both to implementing code. For a person—or an agent able to use that view—visual grouping and explicit links could help establish what to inspect first.

The conceptual discussion in the September 30, 2026 article “Whiteboard IDE: What a Canvas-Based Design Tool Reveals About Agent Context Management” asks how a canvas might be represented for an LLM context window. It explores possible approaches such as serializing nodes and edges, selecting a region, following connections, and using proximity as an initial relevance clue. These are conceptual examples, not confirmed Whiteboard implementation details. The README confirms an in-app canvas and an SDK for agents to draw on it; it does not specify that Whiteboard serializes the canvas to JSON, stores positions separately from code, applies a 200-pixel relevance radius, or exposes sample tools such as get_node or query_spatial_region.
The distinction is important because a diagram’s layout is not the same thing as a reliable context-selection policy. “Which files are relevant?” remains a question for code relationships, task intent, and constraints—not just what sits nearby on a screen. A canvas may help identify candidate context, but an agent still needs access to the source and a way to test whether important connections have been missed.

Where a canvas helps—and where it can mislead
| Task or review need | What the canvas can contribute | What still needs attention |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture overview | Grouping and links can make components and their documented relationships easier to scan. | Confirm the diagram reflects the current code; layout alone does not prove a dependency is complete. |
| Refactoring or system design | A map can help orient discussion about components, dependencies, and intended changes. | Inspect affected source and trace dependencies beyond the visible region. |
| Line-level code review | Links from diagrams to code can connect the overview to implementation. | Use the diff and source navigation for exact changes; a spatial summary is not a substitute for reading code. |
| Deep debugging or performance work | A diagram may provide useful orientation to a system’s structure. | Follow execution and data through source, tests, and other systematic checks rather than relying on the map. |
| Security audit | A canvas can make selected components and relationships visible. | Check global security requirements and paths outside the displayed neighborhood; local context can omit them. |
Proximity is especially easy to over-trust. A dependency may be relevant while sitting elsewhere on the canvas, and a security rule or other global constraint may apply to components beyond the selected area. The conceptual article calls attention to this risk of “agent myopia”: an agent that focuses on a local slice may miss conditions that apply across the system.
Context-management risks to watch
The same article raises several plausible failure modes for spatial context systems. They are design risks, not reported incidents or measured problems in Whiteboard.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
- Stale references: after a layout change, a stored spatial reference or a human’s mental map may no longer point to the intended component.
- Ambiguous nodes: similar-looking or similarly named elements can make it unclear which component a link or instruction refers to.
- Growing connections: as edges accumulate, a diagram can become difficult to read and harder to use as a focused context source.
- Context overflow: adding more nodes and relationships may exceed what can usefully fit in an agent’s context window, even if the canvas itself can display them.
- Concurrent layout changes: when people and agents work at once, conflicting edits to a shared layout could create confusion about which arrangement is current.
- Local focus hiding global constraints: selecting a region can omit distant dependencies, system-wide invariants, or policies that govern the task.
These risks suggest a useful division of labor: use spatial structure to orient and narrow an investigation, then verify the relevant code, dependencies, and constraints through source-level navigation and systematic checks. Whiteboard’s documented code links, LSP navigation, semantic diff, and decision log support that broader review workflow, but the README does not claim they eliminate omissions.

How to judge Whiteboard’s fit
Whiteboard is most naturally suited to reviews and architecture conversations where people benefit from seeing diagrams alongside implementation and agent activity. Its documented combination of code-linked diagrams, diff controls, navigation, and decision history addresses more than a blank drawing board. Its stated limits matter if your workflow expects editing inside the review app, reviewing several repositories together, or sending a review that keeps updating for its recipients.

Wayland is not supported.)
- NOTE: You can easily connect your phone to the art tablet via the OTG connector; while iPhone and iPad are NOT at the moment. The cursor will not show up in the SAMSUNG Galaxy S series at present. If you are not sure whether the product is compatible with your Phone or any help, please contact us.
For a useful trial, choose a branch review where a diagram can clarify a real relationship between components. Check whether the links lead to the code you need, whether the diff controls help focus attention, and whether the review makes agent decisions traceable. Treat any canvas-derived context as a map for investigation, not proof that the agent considered every relevant file. The project’s README documents what Whiteboard offers; the more ambitious mechanics for turning spatial layout into selected model context remain ideas discussed in the conceptual article, not verified product behavior.
