A white-box router separates the routing hardware from its network operating system (NOS). A network operator can choose software for the hardware instead of buying a traditional router whose hardware and software come as one vendor-selected system. The key qualification is compatibility: a NOS must support the specific router platform and version.
What does “white-box router” mean?
“White box” describes a disaggregated approach to routing: hardware and NOS are distinct layers, and they may come from different suppliers. The operator selects a NOS that supports the chosen platform. “Open router” emphasizes the opportunity to choose among software options; “disaggregated router” emphasizes the separation of hardware and software. This does not mean that any NOS will run on any white-box router. The NOS needs the appropriate hardware-abstraction support for the platform’s silicon, and the exact hardware model, software release, and features need to be checked together. Ribbon describes ONIE as an installation environment for compliant NOS software; ONIE alone does not establish that a particular NOS supports every platform. How is a white-box router different from a traditional router?
In a traditional router, one vendor chooses and supplies the hardware and software as a combined system. KDDI’s 2022 announcement describes traditional routers as comprising “software, hardware and semiconductor chips chosen by one vendor.” In a white-box model, those layers can be chosen separately, giving the operator more choice but also making compatibility and responsibility for integration important.

Where do service providers use white-box routers?
Service-provider networks can use the architecture at different points, from mobile sites to aggregation and core routing. The role depends on the network design and the supported features of the particular platform.
Cell-site routing
A cell-site router can carry mobile backhaul or midhaul traffic and may provide precise timing for telecom networks. Aggregation routing
An aggregation router collects traffic from cell sites or other access nodes before it moves deeper into the network. The same S9500-30XS record identifies backhaul and access aggregation as intended uses.

Core routing
A core router handles high-capacity routing functions within a service-provider network. Whether a given white-box platform is suitable for a core role depends on its specifications, supported NOS, and validated features—not simply on its being a white-box device.

What does a real hardware-and-software example show?
An Open Compute Project record lists a UfiSpace S9501-28SMT with IP Infusion OcNOS Service Provider, along with hardware warranty and software-support options. This illustrates how a white-box purchase can be offered as a hardware-and-NOS bundle, despite the underlying separation of the layers. Who integrates and supports the combined system?
Separately sourced hardware and software still have to work together. The operator can integrate and validate the system internally, or arrange for a supplier or outside systems integrator to do so. A Heavy Reading survey reported in a Nokia-hosted 2023 document asked 87 respondents about white-box router procurement preferences: 45% selected an outside systems integrator, 40% selected a white-box hardware supplier to integrate the components, 14% were undecided, and 1% said they would not implement white-box routers. Before choosing a platform or procurement arrangement, establish who is responsible for making the complete system work and keeping it supported:
- Compatibility: Confirm support for the exact hardware model and NOS release, including the relevant silicon and required features.
- Integration and validation: Identify who installs, configures, and tests the combined system.
- Troubleshooting: Agree who coordinates diagnosis when a fault could involve hardware, software, or their interaction.
- Role-specific capability: Verify the required protocols, services, interfaces, and timing support for the intended network role.
- Lifecycle and support: Check warranty coverage, software support, and responsibility for updates and ongoing maintenance.
Is a white-box router the same as a white-box switch?
They share the general idea of separating network hardware from software, but they are different equipment categories. A router forwards traffic between networks using routing functions; a switch connects devices or network segments within a local or data-center fabric. The “white-box” label describes the sourcing and software model, not whether the device is a router or a switch. Select equipment based on the network role and confirm the specific platform’s capabilities.
