Which Zero Trust Security Tools Should You Buy? A Practical Buying Guide

Zero Trust is a program, not a single purchase. Map your control gaps, compare tools by use case and existing systems, then validate fit in a scoped pilot.

Buy tools for the Zero Trust gaps you actually have—not a product labeled “Zero Trust.” Start by mapping identity, device, network, application, and data controls; then evaluate tools that fit your systems and the access problems you need to solve. Microsoft Entra and Intune configurations may suit identity and device policy, while Cloudflare Access, Zscaler Private Access, and Palo Alto Prisma Access are examples to consider for private application access. None is a complete Zero Trust program, and vendor descriptions are not independent product rankings.

What a Zero Trust tool needs to do

Zero Trust is an architecture and operating model, not a single software category. CISA’s Zero Trust Maturity Model, Version 2.0 (April 2023) groups the work into five pillars: identity, devices, networks, applications and workloads, and data. Visibility and analytics, automation and orchestration, and governance apply across those pillars.

The model’s seven tenets include treating data and computing services as resources, securing communications regardless of network location, granting access per session, and basing access on dynamic policy. In practice, an access decision should account for the request’s context—including identity and device state—instead of trusting a user simply because they are on a particular network. CISA’s August 2024 Connected Communities guidance reproduces NIST SP 800-207’s goal as “prevent unauthorized access to data and services coupled with making the access control enforcement as granular as possible.”

A zero trust network access (ZTNA) service can help control access to selected applications. It does not, by itself, establish sound identity lifecycle management, healthy endpoints, data protection, monitoring, governance, or automation. CISA also notes that pillars can progress at different speeds, while still depending on compatible capabilities and coordination.

Choose tools in the order your organization needs them

  1. Map the environment. Inventory important users, devices, applications, workloads, data, and access paths. Note what is exposed and how access is granted today.
  2. Identify the highest-risk gaps. Use CISA’s five pillars to decide whether the immediate need is identity and device policy, private application access, network or cloud controls, data protection, or visibility and response.
  3. Check what your current systems can already do. Prefer controls that make good use of your existing identity, endpoint, and logging investments when they meet your requirements. Microsoft, for example, documents identity and device access configurations involving Entra ID, Conditional Access, and Intune, with device compliance and risk posture as relevant signals.
  4. Shortlist tools for a defined use case. Compare products that address the same problem rather than treating every “Zero Trust” offering as interchangeable. The table below distinguishes examples by the role their vendors describe.
  5. Run a scoped proof of concept. Test representative people, devices, applications, and policies before planning a wider deployment. Use the cases and checks in the pilot section below.

Zero Trust tools to evaluate by use case

Need Example to evaluate What its source describes Fit question
Identity and device access policy Microsoft Entra ID, Conditional Access, and Intune Microsoft publishes identity and device access configurations and guidance on endpoint compliance and posture. Do you already operate Microsoft identity and endpoint management, and can the required applications and devices meet the policies you need?
Private application access Cloudflare Access Cloudflare describes access for employees and contractors to self-hosted, SaaS, and non-web applications, with identity and device-health checks. Does it cover your application types, identity sources, device signals, and operational requirements?
Private application access Zscaler Private Access Zscaler describes connecting users to private applications without a VPN and positions ZPA within its broader platform. How would its connectors, endpoint agents, policies, and broader platform capabilities fit your environment and operations?
ZTNA within a broader SASE security service Palo Alto Prisma Access Palo Alto’s ZTNA 2.0 materials describe least-privilege access and continuous trust verification. Does the broader service fit your network and security operations, and can you demonstrate the inspection and posture controls you require?

These examples are not directly interchangeable: Microsoft’s cited guidance concerns identity and device policy, while the other examples are positioned around private application access or a broader security service. CISA’s architecture is a useful way to identify the control you need; it is not a ranking of vendors.

What to test in a proof of concept

Write down what success means before enabling a product. Keep the pilot narrow enough to manage, but include the conditions that are likely to expose integration or support problems.

  • RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
  • Application coverage: Include representative applications, especially difficult legacy or non-web applications where relevant.
  • People and devices: Test the identity providers, managed devices, device types, and posture signals you expect to use. Include unmanaged devices or third parties if they are part of the access requirement.
  • Policy behavior: Check how access decisions change when identity, device state, or policy changes, and whether the resulting access is appropriately limited.
  • Operations and visibility: Review logs, alerting, integration with your response process, administrative workload, and the steps needed to troubleshoot a denied request.
  • Resilience and recovery: Test expected failure cases and recovery procedures, including what users and administrators experience when a required component or connection is unavailable.
  • Deployment and exit: Document migration work, user-support needs, licensing boundaries, contract terms, and what it would take to remove or replace the service.

Ask each vendor to demonstrate the required behavior against your own scenarios rather than relying only on feature descriptions. The cited government and vendor materials do not provide comparable independent performance results or current prices. Obtain current written quotes and evaluate commercial terms alongside technical fit.

How to make the buying decision

Start with the control gap and the systems you already operate. If identity and endpoint policy are the main gap, first determine whether your current identity and device-management tools can meet the requirement. If the problem is controlled access to private applications, compare ZTNA services against your application mix, device and identity signals, deployment model, and operational capacity. If you are considering a broader SASE service, include its impact on existing network and security operations in the evaluation.

Rank #3
GL.iNet GL-MT5000 Brume 3 Wired VPN Security Gateway NO Wi-Fi
  • 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
  • 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
  • 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles

For any shortlist, compare total scope, environment compatibility, application coverage, third-party access, data and logging integration, administrative effort, user impact, resiliency, licensing, contract terms, and exit costs. Require a scoped pilot to validate important claims; the available product descriptions do not establish which named vendor performs best or costs least.

Where a FIDO2 security key fits

A FIDO2 security key can be a physical option for hardware-based multifactor authentication, but it is a supporting item rather than a Zero Trust solution. Cloudflare’s Zero-Trust Roadmap lists hardware keys among hardware-based authentication options; it does not identify a preferred model. Before selecting a key, check compatibility with the organization’s devices and services, recovery options, and security policy.
