Voice AI APIs do not follow one universal audio-retention rule. A service may process raw audio without keeping it while retaining a transcript, request metadata, or abuse-monitoring logs under different rules. The outcome depends on the provider, the specific endpoint, account settings, and any applicable contract.
What happens to audio, transcripts, and logs?
“Does the API store my audio?” is only one part of the privacy question. A voice application can involve several separate data types: the original recording, a transcript, prompts and responses sent to a language model, request metadata, safety or abuse-monitoring records, and application state used to retrieve results. A provider’s policy for one type does not establish what happens to the others.

Processing is also different from retention. An API must handle audio to perform speech recognition or another voice task; a zero-retention arrangement does not mean the data is never processed. Ask what is retained after processing, for what purpose, and for how long.
How long do voice AI APIs keep audio recordings?
The documented examples below show why the endpoint and data category matter. They cover OpenAI’s API, Google Cloud Speech-to-Text, and Anthropic’s Claude API—not every voice API or every feature from those providers. Anthropic’s retention terms concern Claude API inputs and outputs; they should not be read as a policy specifically for raw audio recordings.

These are provider-documented policies, not an industry-wide average or a guarantee that every account has identical settings. For OpenAI and Anthropic, check the current terms that apply to the organization and endpoint; their policies include exceptions and feature-specific differences.
Does an API keep the transcript if it deletes the audio?
It can. Google’s asynchronous Speech-to-Text behavior is a clear example: the service says it does not store the input audio, but does keep the returned transcript for approximately five days for retrieval. Streaming and synchronous requests have different documented handling.
For a voice workflow that passes recognized text to a separate model API, check both services. The speech provider’s audio policy does not determine how a second provider handles the transcript, prompt, generated response, or logs. Anthropic’s API retention statements, for example, concern Claude API inputs and outputs; they do not establish how another service stores the recording or transcript before it reaches Claude.

Do AI voice APIs use recordings to train models?
Training and service operation are separate questions from retention. A provider may retain data for safety or service functions without using it to train models, and opting into data logging or improvement can change how submitted content is used.
- OpenAI API: OpenAI says API data is not used to train or improve models unless the customer explicitly opts in. Its abuse-monitoring logs are a distinct data-control issue.
- Google Cloud Speech-to-Text: Google says customer audio and transcripts are not used to improve the service unless the customer opts into data logging. The program is configured at the project level and allows logged data to be used to improve service quality.
- Anthropic Claude API: Anthropic says retained API data is not used for training without express permission.
Check whether an opt-in applies to the project, organization, or specific service, and whether it covers audio, transcripts, or both. Do not assume that a setting for one API controls a separate provider in the same voice application.
Can I use a voice AI API with zero data retention?
Sometimes, but “ZDR” is a defined control with provider-specific scope—not a promise that no data is processed or that every feature qualifies.

OpenAI
OpenAI lists /v1/realtime as eligible for Zero Data Retention, with limitations. Eligibility for that endpoint should not be treated as eligibility for every API endpoint or feature. OpenAI also distinguishes abuse-monitoring retention from application state.
Anthropic
Anthropic says its ZDR arrangement applies to the Claude API when Anthropic is the processor, must be enabled for each organization, and means prompts and responses are not stored at rest after the API response is returned. The documentation identifies exceptions, including a 30-day retention period for designated covered models. Use through AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud is governed by the relevant cloud provider’s processor and retention policies, not Anthropic’s API ZDR arrangement.
Google Cloud Speech-to-Text
The cited Google documentation describes different handling by request mode and an optional data-logging program; it does not establish a general ZDR arrangement for the service. Confirm any stronger retention commitments in the terms that apply to your specific Google Cloud deployment.

Where is audio processed when I use a speech API?
Processing location and storage location are not interchangeable. Google says Speech-to-Text data is processed globally. Its EU and US multi-region endpoints can limit processing to those areas, but Google says single-region processing is not supported. An EU multi-region endpoint therefore should not be described as single-country or single-region processing.
OpenAI’s regional endpoint documentation lists regional options and service-specific conditions. Availability and residency controls can vary by service and region, so verify the conditions for the exact API endpoint you plan to use rather than assuming that one regional setting covers every component of a voice workflow.

What to verify before sending sensitive recordings
Use the exact endpoint and account configuration in your review. These questions help uncover differences that a general privacy page may not resolve:
- Data categories: Is raw audio stored? What about transcripts, prompts, outputs, request metadata, derived classifications, or safety logs?
- Request mode: Do streaming, synchronous, batch, and asynchronous calls have different storage, retrieval, or deletion behavior?
- Purpose and opt-ins: Is content used only to provide the service, for abuse monitoring, or for improvement? Is a data-logging or training opt-in enabled?
- Retention period: What is the default for each category, and what legal, safety, model, or feature-specific exceptions apply?
- Enhanced controls: Which exact endpoints qualify for ZDR or another retention control? Does it require approval, a separate agreement, or organization-level enablement?
- Region: Where is each part of the workflow processed and stored? Does the chosen region mean a single region or a broader multi-region boundary?
- Retrieval and deletion: Can the application retrieve an asynchronous result, and when does the provider remove it? Which records are outside that deletion behavior?
- Processing chain: Does a cloud host or marketplace provider process the request, and whose terms govern that leg of the service?
Finally, review the current provider documentation and contract for the particular deployment before transmitting sensitive audio. Public API policies can change, and an endpoint’s documented behavior does not automatically apply to a different feature or intermediary.
