For an OBS stream, the OBS community Media Playlist Source plugin is the clearest documented option for restoring which file is playing after OBS restarts. Its listing says it saves the currently playing file, but does not say it restores the exact position within that file, starts OBS after the server reboots, or guarantees that YouTube reconnects. Those are separate recovery steps.
What “resume after a restart” can mean
A YouTube stream can fail at several layers. A playlist source may remember a video, but that alone does not restart the streaming software or reconnect it to YouTube. Before choosing a tool, decide which part of recovery you need:

- Remember the current video: OBS opens the same playlist item after OBS restarts.
- Restore the exact playback position: the video resumes at its previous elapsed time rather than from the beginning. The plugin listing does not establish this behavior.
- Restart OBS after a server reboot: the operating system launches OBS automatically when it starts. This requires host and startup configuration separate from playlist state.
- Reconnect to YouTube: the encoder reconnects to the intended ingest destination and stream key. A playlist feature does not provide that guarantee.
- Keep the same broadcast going through an interruption: whether that happens depends on the encoder, network, host, and YouTube stream state; the reviewed feature descriptions do not establish seamless continuity.

2. OBS Media Playlist Source plugin: restore the current file after OBS restarts
The OBS Project Forum listing for Media Playlist Source describes it as an alternative to VLC Video Source and says it saves the currently playing file so that file will be played when OBS restarts. The listing identifies version 0.1.3, a minimum OBS Studio version of 30.0.0, and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. These are details reported on the listing, not independent reboot-test results.

The documented promise is about the current file. It does not specify exact seek-position restoration, operating-system boot launch, YouTube reconnection, or uninterrupted broadcast recovery. Confirm that the plugin supports your media and playlist before relying on it unattended.
3. OBS VLC Video Source: playlists, looping, and shuffle
OBS’s media sources guide documents VLC Video Source support for playlists, looping, and shuffle. VLC must be installed for the source to appear. The guide does not claim that VLC Video Source remembers the current playlist item after OBS restarts, so do not assume it provides the same restart behavior described by the Media Playlist Source listing.

Set up OBS recovery as separate layers
- Choose and verify the media source. For the documented current-file restoration behavior, check the plugin’s compatibility requirements and install it in an OBS version that meets the listing’s minimum of 30.0.0. If using VLC Video Source instead, install VLC and confirm the source appears in OBS; treat its playlist, loop, and shuffle functions separately from restart persistence.
- Test playlist behavior before relying on it. Start the playlist, note the active file and elapsed position, restart OBS, and check what happens. The plugin listing supports expecting the current file to play again; it does not establish whether playback resumes at the same timestamp. Test the actual media formats and playlist used in production.
- Configure the YouTube destination and key. YouTube’s live stream settings cover stream settings, stream keys, and “Reuse settings.” Reuse settings reuses stream metadata, settings, and key; it does not save the encoder’s source-playlist state. Protect the stream key as a credential and confirm OBS is configured for the intended YouTube stream.
- Configure server startup separately. If the whole server may reboot, configure its operating system to launch OBS after boot and verify the right profile, scene, and source load. The plugin’s restart behavior does not itself configure launch-at-boot.
- Test the full failure path. From the actual host, test an OBS restart and a server reboot separately. Check whether the intended file loads, whether it begins at the expected point, whether OBS connects to YouTube, and what viewers see during the interruption. No controlled reboot or recovery-time comparison is established by the cited feature listings.
Keep YouTube ingest and viewer playback separate from source recovery
YouTube’s terminology can be easy to confuse with a source-media playlist. Its HLS setup guidance covers ingest: YouTube lists OBS among encoders supporting HLS, and the rolling-playlist requirement limits the segments being sent to YouTube to a maximum of five outstanding segments. That is about transmitted HLS segments, not which source video OBS remembers or its playback position.
YouTube’s DVR feature is also different. It lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue a live stream; it does not restore the streaming server’s playlist after reboot. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, affecting viewer pause and resume. See YouTube’s DVR guidance for the platform limitation.
