To randomize prerecorded videos in OBS, add them to a VLC Video Source, enable Shuffle Playlist, and enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart at the end. OBS performs the shuffle before it encodes the video for YouTube; YouTube does not shuffle the playlist. VLC must be installed for the source to appear.
Set up a shuffled OBS playlist
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS documents the VLC Video Source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC too; without VLC, the source will not appear. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Add the source. In OBS, use the Sources dock’s + button and select VLC Video Source. OBS describes adding sources in its Sources Guide.
- Add your files. Open the source properties and add the local media files you want played. OBS lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check the current OBS documentation if you have a different format.
- Enable shuffle and looping. Check Shuffle Playlist to randomize the order and Loop Playlist to restart playback after the list ends. OBS says shuffle is off and loop is on by default. Its documentation defines shuffle as randomizing media files or keeping them in file-list order.
- Choose what happens when the source is hidden. The source properties let you stop and restart playback, pause and resume it, or keep playing while it is not visible. Choose based on how your scenes work. If this source stays visible on the active scene, the setting matters mainly when you switch scenes or hide it.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a livestream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Start the encoder, then use Live Control Room to preview and manage the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. First-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Check the preview before relying on the stream. Confirm that both video and audio are present in Live Control Room. YouTube also recommends monitoring stream quality and checking that local archive files are growing; see its live streaming tips.
What shuffle and loop do—and do not guarantee
Looping restarts the playlist after it reaches the end. Shuffle randomizes the order of the media files. OBS does not document a guarantee that it will create a fresh random order every time the list loops. Its source implementation is version-sensitive; an issue filed for OBS 32.1.1 on April 26, 2026 requested re-randomization on initialization or reload and was closed as not planned. That report concerns a specific version and behavior, not every OBS configuration. If a new order at each cycle is essential, test your exact OBS version and setup rather than assuming the loop reshuffles.

YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. The creator must be at least 16. Check the channel’s current eligibility in YouTube before planning a continuous broadcast.

With this method, OBS encodes and sends the stream from your computer. The playlist can loop, but that alone cannot prevent a power, computer, OBS, or internet interruption. YouTube recommends upload-bandwidth headroom of 20% and warns that connection interruptions can break a stream; consult its streaming tips. Monitor the connection and stream status during operation.

Do not count on a complete 24-hour YouTube archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If a complete recording matters, keep a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.
Confirm you have rights to every file
You are responsible for having the rights needed to stream the content, including applicable music rights, and for following YouTube’s rules and applicable law. Shuffling prerecorded videos does not grant permission to rebroadcast them. Review YouTube’s livestream terms before putting a playlist on air.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then restart OBS. Match architectures—64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC—and check OBS’s dependency guidance.
- The playlist plays in its listed order: Open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Shuffle Playlist. The documented default is off.
- The playlist stops at the end: Enable Loop Playlist. Looping restarts the list; it is not a documented promise of a new randomized order.
- There is no sound or video in the YouTube preview: Check the OBS preview and source properties, then verify the stream URL and key in OBS against the values for the selected broadcast in Live Control Room. Confirm audio and video in the YouTube preview before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream disconnects: Check OBS and YouTube’s stream status, the computer’s power and network, and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; a playlist loop cannot repair a dropped network connection.
- You cannot find a complete replay afterward: A continuous stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived completely. Use a local recording if you need a dependable full-length copy.
