Based on Marvel’s published team histories—not any announced future lineup—the strongest fits to join Wolverine are Kitty Pryde, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. Jubilee is a compelling mentor-and-student option, while other mutants have fit specific Wolverine-led teams or school settings. These are story-fit judgments, not predictions about a forthcoming roster.
What makes a mutant a strong fit with Wolverine?
Wolverine is often portrayed as a loner, but his history also includes deep friendships, team leadership, and mentorship. Marvel’s X-Men ’97 Multiverse RPG profile describes that version of him as someone who “often chooses to operate solo,” while noting that his attitude toward fellow X-Men softened and he became a valued teammate. That profile is specific to the adaptation; it should not be treated as a description of every comic continuity.

For this ranking, the clearest evidence is a past close bond with Logan, repeated work alongside him, or a place on a Wolverine-led team. A shared roster shows that characters have worked together in a particular story; it does not establish that they are planned for a future team.
The strongest relationship-based candidates
Kitty Pryde: the clearest personal-bond choice
Marvel’s biography of Kitty says she joined the X-Men and became close to both Storm and Wolverine. Logan’s affectionate nicknames for her—“Cat” and “Pun’kin”—give their relationship a personal warmth that makes Kitty an especially strong fit for a team built around him. She also served on the staff of the Jean Grey School during Wolverine’s headmaster era, linking their relationship to his leadership years as well.

Storm: a trusted teammate with leadership experience
Marvel’s Wolverine history guide names Storm among the X-Men with whom Logan formed a tight bond after joining the international team. She also appears on the staff of the Jean Grey School. Their shared team history and experience in leadership make her a natural choice when the story calls for a capable partner rather than a sidekick.
Nightcrawler: a bond established early in Logan’s X-Men history
Nightcrawler is one of the teammates Marvel specifically identifies as close to Wolverine after Logan joined the X-Men. That direct historical connection makes him a well-supported choice for a group that relies on trust and familiarity, even though the cited material does not place him on the Jean Grey School staff.
Colossus: another close teammate from the international team
Marvel’s guide also names Colossus among Wolverine’s close X-Men teammates. That makes him a strong relationship-based candidate. The available school-era source offers less Wolverine-era staff context for Colossus than it does for Kitty and Storm, so the case here rests chiefly on their earlier team bond.

Other candidates, depending on the kind of team
Jubilee: a mentor-and-student pairing
Marvel’s X-Men ’97 game profile identifies Wolverine as Jubilee’s mentor and describes her close connection with her teammates. That makes her a natural fit for a story focused on mentorship and a younger generation. This is evidence from an adaptation-specific profile, not proof that every comic version shares precisely the same relationship.
Beast, Iceman, Rachel Grey, Husk, and Doop: the school-era staff
Marvel’s description of the Wolverine & the X-Men by Jason Aaron Omnibus names Beast, Iceman, Rachel Grey, Kitty Pryde, Storm, Husk, and Doop on the staff of the Jean Grey School while Wolverine leads it. Those names support a wider school-team tier, but the roster alone does not show that each character shared Kitty’s personal closeness with Logan.
Deadpool, Cable, Chamber, and Thunderbird: a published team example
Marvel’s Weapon X-Men: The Real Thing collection describes a team including Wolverine, Deadpool, Cable, Chamber, and Thunderbird. The collection gathers Weapon X-Men (2025) #1–5 and lists October 15, 2025 as its publication date. It is a concrete example of those characters appearing together in a published team, not a forecast of what comes next.

How Wolverine’s team history puts these choices in context
Marvel’s reading guide traces Wolverine’s move into the X-Men to Giant-Size X-Men (1975) #1, where he joins an international team under Professor Charles Xavier. The guide identifies Nightcrawler, Storm, and Colossus as teammates with whom he formed a tight bond. Kitty’s later closeness to Logan adds a distinct relationship-based case.
Wolverine’s role has not been limited to membership. Marvel’s team history says he took over as headmaster of the school later known as the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, and notes that many mutants led their own squads. That broader history helps explain why a Wolverine-led story can plausibly be about a school staff, a close-knit field team, or an unusual specialist lineup rather than one fixed roster.
Logan has also worked beyond the X-Men: Marvel’s Alpha Flight history says he participated in the early Flight, left Department H, and joined the X-Men, with Alpha Flight and the X-Men later cooperating. Alpha Flight is a separate team, not an X-Men squad, but the history illustrates that Wolverine’s affiliations have crossed team boundaries.
