Whether your borrowing cost rises depends on the rate clause in your loan agreement. A fixed-rate term loan generally keeps its stated rate for the agreed period; a variable-rate loan or line of credit can become more expensive when its reference rate rises and the contract applies a reset. That is separate from Bitcoin collateral risk: a falling BTC price, a growing loan balance, or both can weaken your collateral coverage and trigger a margin call or liquidation under the agreement.
There is no universal rate or margin-call rule for Bitcoin-backed loans. Your signed documents and applicable law determine how the rate is calculated, when it can change, and what the lender may do if collateral requirements are breached.

First check whether your rate is fixed or variable
Fixed-rate term loan
A market-rate increase does not by itself change a fixed loan rate. For example, Strike says its term-loan APR remains fixed until the borrower refinances, consolidates, or closes the loan. That is a provider-specific term, not a rule for every Bitcoin-backed loan. A fixed rate also does not remove maturity obligations, fees, Bitcoin price exposure, or the possibility that refinancing later could have different terms. Strike’s borrowing support page

Variable-rate loan or line of credit
A variable rate may be defined as a published index plus a contractual margin, with the rate recalculated on set dates. Strike’s line-of-credit disclosure describes an APR tied to the U.S. Prime Rate plus a fixed margin, with recalculation possible once per calendar quarter on the last business day. If the index has risen by the next reset, the APR and interest cost on the amount borrowed can rise. Strike’s page displayed a 13.25% variable APR when accessed on October 4, 2026; that is a volatile, provider-specific figure, not a typical or guaranteed Bitcoin loan rate. Strike says interest on that credit line accrues daily on drawn principal, not unused credit. Under a similar arrangement, an APR increase affects the amount already drawn, subject to the loan’s reset timing and balance calculation. Check whether interest is paid as it accrues, added to the balance, or handled another way in your own agreement. Strike’s borrowing support page
Flat-fee or prepaid-interest pricing
Not every advertised borrowing cost behaves like a floating APR. Bitcoin Asset Reserve Ltd’s June 2026 terms describe a flat fee fixed at drawdown that includes interest for the full term and an origination fee; the terms say early repayment does not reduce that fee. The individual loan agreement prevails over the provider’s summary. Bitcoin Asset Reserve’s terms

A higher rate and a margin call are different risks
A rate change affects the cost or balance of borrowing according to the contract. A margin call is governed by the collateral test and remedies in the agreement. Bitcoin’s value can fall even when a loan’s rate is fixed; conversely, a variable APR can rise while Bitcoin’s value is stable. Either or both may affect collateral coverage, depending on how the lender calculates the debt and values the collateral.

Ask whether accrued but unpaid interest counts in the debt balance used for collateral calculations, and how often the lender values the Bitcoin. The cited provider documents do not establish a universal answer to either question.

Thresholds are contract-specific
Lantern Finance’s rate page, last updated June 26, 2026, lists a maximum 50% LTV for Bitcoin loans, a 72-hour grace period after a margin call, and possible liquidation if LTV remains above 75% after that period. Those are Lantern’s published terms, subject to eligibility, jurisdiction, and the signed agreement. Lantern Finance rates
Bitcoin Asset Reserve Ltd’s June 2026 terms list a 70% margin-call threshold and an 80% liquidation threshold, while stating that the individual loan agreement controls. A separate 2026 SEC-filed institutional loan disclosure describes a different system based on margin ratio: an initial ratio of 150%, a collateral call at 130% or below, and potential liquidation at 120% or below if a deficiency was not cured within 24 hours. Its specified Bitcoin spot-rate reference and cure period belong to that particular agreement, not to retail loans generally. Bitcoin Asset Reserve’s terms SEC-filed loan agreement

LTV and margin ratio are not interchangeable labels, and providers may use different valuation sources and procedures. Do not compare thresholds without checking each contract’s definition.
What to inspect in your loan documents
| Provision | What to find | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rate structure | Fixed or variable rate; index and margin | Shows whether market-rate movements can change your borrowing cost. |
| Reset mechanics | Reset frequency, observation date, notice requirements, and any cap or floor | Establishes when a variable rate can change and how the new rate is determined. |
| Interest calculation | APR definition, accrual and compounding method, and whether interest applies to drawn funds or the full credit limit | Determines how the amount owed changes over time. |
| Fees and early repayment | Origination, servicing, repayment, refinancing, and early payoff terms | A headline rate may not capture total cost; prepaid fees may not be refunded. |
| Term and maturity | Payment schedule, maturity date, and extension or refinancing rights | A fixed rate does not remove maturity or refinancing risk. |
| Collateral measurement | LTV or margin-ratio definition, price source, valuation frequency, and treatment of accrued interest | These rules determine how collateral coverage is assessed. |
| Margin calls and liquidation | Trigger, cure deadline, acceptable cures, notice, liquidation authority, and fees | Defines your options and the lender’s actions if the collateral test is breached. |
| Custody and asset use | Custodian, segregation, rights to lend or reuse collateral, and any smart-contract design | Clarifies who controls the Bitcoin and how it may be handled. |
| Provider and jurisdiction | Lender identity, governing law, eligibility, and complaint or insolvency arrangements | Availability and borrower protections can vary by provider and location. |
The IMF distinguishes centralized platforms, which may take custody or ownership of deposited assets, from decentralized platforms, where smart contracts may lock assets temporarily. That is a broad description; the provider’s actual terms determine how a particular loan handles collateral. IMF guidance on crypto assets

How the examples differ
| Example | Published or disclosed terms | What the example does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Strike line of credit | Variable APR linked to U.S. Prime Rate plus a fixed margin; quarterly recalculation possible. The page displayed 13.25% APR when accessed October 4, 2026. | Shows one U.S.-based provider’s variable-rate structure; the displayed rate is not a general benchmark. |
| Strike term loan | Strike says the APR stays fixed until refinancing, consolidation, or closure. | Shows one provider’s fixed-rate term-loan treatment. |
| Lantern Finance Bitcoin loan | Rate page last updated June 26, 2026: 10% starting APR, up to 50% maximum LTV, 72-hour margin-call grace period, and possible liquidation if LTV exceeds 75% after grace. | Provider terms vary with eligibility, jurisdiction, collateral, LTV, and the signed agreement. |
| USBC institutional loan | SEC-filed disclosure describes a $5.0 million one-year fixed-term loan at 8.5% annual interest, entered March 20, 2026 and maturing March 18, 2027. | A corporate example of fixed interest alongside Bitcoin collateral requirements; not a consumer rate offer. |
| Bitcoin Asset Reserve Ltd | June 2026 terms describe a flat fee fixed at drawdown, a 70% margin-call threshold, and an 80% liquidation threshold. | Provider-specific summary terms; the individual agreement prevails. |
These examples show why the loan’s rate clause and collateral clauses must be read separately. The figures are dated and contract-specific, not forecasts or a universal market standard.
