For a straightforward wireless controller on a PlayStation 4, choose Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4. Sony documents its features and PlayStation explains how to pair it with the console. Officially licensed alternatives exist, but the examples documented by PlayStation include wired models—not Bluetooth gamepads—so they are not direct wireless substitutes.
Which Bluetooth gamepad should you choose for PS4?
The most clearly documented native wireless choice is the Sony DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. PlayStation’s setup instructions pair it to a PS4 over USB; after pairing and charging, you can disconnect the cable and play wirelessly. That makes it the clearest recommendation when you want a controller designed and documented for PS4 use.

Consider how a controller’s features fit the games you play and the way you hold it. Sony lists the following on its DUALSHOCK 4 product page:

How to pair DUALSHOCK 4 with a PS4
- Turn on the PS4 and connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the console using a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button to pair it.
- Once it has enough charge, disconnect the cable to use the controller wirelessly.

Are licensed alternatives Bluetooth controllers?
PlayStation’s additional PS4 controllers page presents officially licensed alternatives, including Hori and Nacon examples. The HORI Mini and Nacon Compact examples on that page are wired. They should not be treated as Bluetooth options simply because they work with PS4. PlayStation also notes that some listed alternatives lack selected DUALSHOCK 4 features; that caveat does not establish which features are absent from every model.

No. Pairing a DUALSHOCK 4 with a supported phone, tablet, or computer is a separate use case from pairing it with a PS4. For those other devices, PlayStation’s Bluetooth compatibility guide covers supported Android, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS versions and compatible games or apps. It instructs users to turn the controller off, disconnect USB, then hold SHARE and PS until the light bar flashes before selecting the controller in the device’s Bluetooth settings.

For Bluetooth use on those non-console devices, PlayStation says touchpad support, light-bar color control, rumble, motion sensing, and headphone-jack audio are unavailable, except on compatible Sony Xperia devices. Those limitations concern use with other devices; they should not be applied to normal PS4 play.
