Disable only startup apps you recognize and do not need ready when you sign in. In Task Manager, review the app’s startup impact and selectively turn off entries you do not use; there is no universal list of app names that is safe for every laptop. Startup apps can slow boot time and add background activity, but they are only one possible cause of a slow PC.
Which startup apps should you disable?
Disable an app when you know what it does and do not need it to open automatically at sign-in. Keep apps that you rely on immediately after logging in. The right choices depend on the software installed and how you use the laptop, so avoid disabling everything or following a generic list of app names.

Microsoft says apps that run at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage. That makes unused entries worth reviewing, but an app’s impact label is not a guarantee of how much time your laptop will save if you disable it.

How to disable startup apps in Windows
Use Task Manager for impact details
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Review each entry’s name and startup impact. If you are unsure what an app is for, leave it enabled until you identify it.
- Right-click an app you do not need at sign-in and select Disable.
Microsoft notes that Task Manager provides a detailed view of startup impact. Disabling an entry here prevents it from starting automatically; it does not uninstall the app.

Use Settings for a simpler toggle
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Turn off the toggle for an app you do not need to start automatically.
Both Settings and Task Manager provide startup controls in Windows 10 and Windows 11. If an app does not appear in these registered startup lists, Microsoft also documents managing startup shortcuts through File Explorer. Check the app’s purpose before changing its startup behavior.
What Task Manager’s startup impact labels mean
Microsoft defines the labels using CPU and disk activity attributed to the startup app. The figures below are category thresholds—not estimates of boot-time savings on your laptop.

A high-impact label can help you decide what to inspect first, but it does not tell you whether the app is safe or unnecessary. Decide based on what the app does and whether you want it running at sign-in.

Slow performance can have several causes. Microsoft also points to factors such as limited storage, outdated software, and hardware limitations; older hardware may not improve significantly from the suggested performance steps. Startup controls are one useful adjustment, not a complete diagnosis.

Use clean boot only to troubleshoot a suspected conflict
A clean boot is a diagnostic procedure for isolating software conflicts, not the normal way to trim startup apps. Microsoft’s procedure includes hiding Microsoft services, disabling other services and enabled startup entries, then re-enabling items systematically to find a possible cause.
