To monitor a trading bot, combine logs, metrics, traces, and—when you need to find code-level resource hotspots—profiles. Metrics show that processing or latency changed; traces show where a request or event spent time; logs record what the system did; profiles help identify which runtime code paths consume resources. OpenTelemetry can provide a vendor-neutral way to instrument and export telemetry, while Grafana and Datadog document workflows that include collecting and analyzing it. No single tool or latency target fits every bot, and observability cannot predict profitable trades or guarantee execution outcomes.
What each observability signal tells you
The signals complement one another. A metric can reveal an incident, a trace can narrow down where it happened, a log can explain the relevant event, and a profile can help identify runtime work behind a resource hotspot. OpenTelemetry groups logs, metrics, and traces as telemetry signals and provides a vendor-neutral instrumentation and export framework.

Logs: what happened
Structured logs are event records. For a trading system, useful events can include feed updates, decision and order lifecycle transitions, exceptions, reconnects, and changes in operational state. Include timestamps and stable correlation identifiers where they help connect an event to a trace or order lifecycle. Choose fields deliberately: do not log secrets or sensitive credentials.

Metrics: how much, how often, and how long
Metrics summarize system behavior over time. Counters, gauges, and histograms can represent processing rates, errors or rejects, queue depth and age, feed freshness, and latency distributions. Keep labels bounded: per-order identifiers, account identifiers, or unconstrained instrument symbols can create high cardinality and expose sensitive context. Put detailed, high-cardinality context in logs or traces only where access and retention can be controlled.

Grafana describes RED panels—request rate, error ratio, and latency—derived from span metrics. For a bot, the same diagnostic pattern can help organize views of work rates, failures, and stage latency; select the underlying measures that fit the system rather than assuming every trading operation is an HTTP request.
Traces: where time or failure moves
A trace follows work across instrumented components. Depending on the architecture, spans might cover strategy processing, risk checks, order construction, an exchange or API gateway, persistence, and asynchronous consumers. A trace is more useful when its context can be correlated with the metrics that exposed an anomaly and the logs that recorded related events. OpenTelemetry’s metrics design describes cross-signal correlation as a goal.

Profiles: where runtime resources go
Profiling can help investigate CPU use, allocations, lock contention, or other runtime hotspots that aggregate metrics alone cannot attribute to code paths. Whether a profiler supports the needed profile type, runtime, and deployment—and what sampling and overhead are involved—depends on the implementation. Confirm those details for the actual language and runtime rather than assuming that profiling support or overhead is universal.

What to instrument in a trading bot
Instrument the system’s operation, not only its strategy output. A bot can produce plausible decisions while feeds are stale, work is backing up, or orders are failing downstream. A trading-bot monitoring guide recommends structured logs, key metrics, health endpoints, and alerts for backlog and dead letters. The following checklist turns those operational concerns into candidate instrumentation; it is not a trading-performance benchmark.

- Market and input flow: record feed or event receipt freshness and detect gaps.
- Processing and queues: measure throughput, queue or backlog depth, and the age of queued work.
- Order lifecycle: track intents, submissions, acknowledgements, cancels, rejects, and retries. Use stable identifiers in logs and traces, with fields selected to avoid exposing sensitive information.
- Stage latency: measure meaningful intervals such as decision-to-submit and submit-to-ack. Use distributions rather than averages alone so that tail behavior is visible.
- Failures and service state: monitor errors, reconnects, dead letters, and health or readiness state.
- Runtime and host: collect relevant CPU, memory, and I/O metrics; investigate with profiles when metrics suggest a code-level resource hotspot.
Choose latency objectives for the actual execution path
There is no validated universal latency threshold for trading bots in the reviewed evidence. Define objectives around the bot’s venue, strategy, execution path, and infrastructure, then measure the stages that matter to that objective. A single end-to-end number can conceal whether time was spent processing an event, waiting in a queue, performing a risk check, or awaiting an acknowledgement.
How to investigate an incident
Use the signals in sequence, following the evidence rather than treating a dashboard as a diagnosis.

- Start with a metric or alert. Identify what changed—such as an error ratio, latency distribution, event freshness, or backlog—and select the affected service or instrument and time window.
- Inspect related traces. Follow the affected work across its instrumented spans to find the slow or failing stage. Check whether the trace context connects to the relevant logs and metrics.
- Read the structured events around that work. Use timestamps and correlation identifiers to inspect decisions, lifecycle transitions, exceptions, reconnects, or operational state changes associated with the trace.
- Profile when resource evidence points to code. If CPU, allocation, or contention signals suggest a runtime hotspot, use a supported profile type for the actual runtime and deployment to investigate further.
This is a signal-led diagnostic workflow, not a guarantee that every incident will produce complete telemetry. Instrumentation, context propagation, collection, and export have to be configured for the data to be available.
OpenTelemetry, Grafana, and Datadog: different roles
OpenTelemetry is an instrumentation and transport layer
OpenTelemetry documents a vendor-neutral framework for instrumenting applications, generating and collecting telemetry, and exporting traces, metrics, and logs. It is not, by itself, a complete storage-and-query backend. Its metrics API and SDK are separated so instrumentation can be decoupled from SDK configuration. The metrics specification states that without an enabled SDK, no metric collection occurs; adding instrumentation alone does not mean metrics are being collected and exported.

Grafana documents collection and analysis workflows
Grafana’s instrumentation documentation describes application telemetry flowing through Grafana Alloy or another OpenTelemetry Collector to Grafana Cloud. It also describes SDK options and span metrics for latency, error ratio, and request rate. These documented capabilities can inform a Grafana-based workflow, but they are not an independent benchmark against another vendor.
Datadog documents OpenTelemetry ingestion and observability capabilities
Datadog’s documentation describes OpenTelemetry integrations and ingestion alongside log management, APM, and profiling capabilities. The existence of these documented workflows does not establish comparative performance, price, plan limits, or suitability for a particular bot.
Compare tools against your bot’s constraints
OpenTelemetry and observability backends solve different parts of the problem, so compare the complete path from instrumentation to investigation. Official documentation establishes available workflows, not a universal winner.
