Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The most useful Windows changes depend on the problem you are trying to solve. Startup controls address slow sign-in, background permissions reduce ongoing app activity, Storage Sense helps when the drive is nearly full, visual-effects settings can make an older PC feel more responsive, privacy controls limit Windows personalization, and Notifications and Focus reduce interruptions. None is a guaranteed speed boost: Microsoft lists low storage, startup programs, background activity, outdated software, malware, and aging hardware as possible causes of slowness.
The instructions below target Windows 11. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so confirm your version in Settings > System > About before following a path. Labels and available controls can differ by build, device, app, and organization policy; if a path does not match, search Settings for the feature name.

Start with a diagnosis, not a blanket “optimization”
Changing every performance or privacy switch at once makes it difficult to identify the real cause and can disable useful behavior. First install pending Windows and driver updates, restart the PC, close programs you are not using, and check whether the system drive has adequate free space. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and watch CPU, memory, disk, and network activity while the slowdown occurs. A malware scan is appropriate when high usage is unexplained or accompanied by pop-ups and unfamiliar processes.
Settings changes are troubleshooting steps. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from them. If one component remains saturated after updates and cleanup, investigate hardware compatibility and health before buying anything; the settings below do not establish that a particular drive, memory kit, or upgrade will solve the bottleneck.

Reduce boot time with Startup apps
Programs that launch at sign-in compete for disk, CPU, and memory before you have opened anything. Disable only launchers you do not need immediately. Keep security software, backup clients, accessibility tools, and work applications that must be ready at sign-in.
Use Windows 11 Settings
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Review the list and switch an unnecessary app to Off.
- Restart and check whether sign-in is faster and whether the app still works when you open it manually.
Use Task Manager when you need impact information
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then select Startup apps.
- Review each entry’s startup-impact information and publisher.
- Right-click an app you recognize and do not need at sign-in, then choose Disable.
Disabling startup does not uninstall the program. It normally remains available from the Start menu, and you can reverse the change in the same screen. Do not disable entries indiscriminately: an unfamiliar item may be required by a device, security product, or organization policy.
Limit background activity without losing needed updates
Supported Microsoft Store-style apps can continue checking for data when you are not using them. Restricting that activity can reduce background load and battery use, but the functional cost is important: choosing Never prevents that app from delivering background notifications and updates.

Change a supported app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options when offered.
- Under the background-permission or battery-usage control, choose the least activity that still meets your needs. Use Never only when delayed notifications and background refresh are acceptable.
Not every app exposes this control. Traditional desktop applications often manage background behavior in their own settings, services, or tray menus, so Windows’ per-app switch may not affect them. For a messaging, calendar, backup, or security app, check its in-app notification and startup options before restricting it.
Free space with Storage Sense and temporary-file cleanup
A nearly full system drive can slow everyday work and leave too little room for updates. Storage Sense can automatically remove eligible temporary files, while the Temporary files page lets you review categories before deleting them.
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Temporary files to inspect the categories and their sizes.
- Clear only categories you understand, then select Remove files.
- Return to Storage and open Storage Sense to choose whether Windows should clean eligible temporary content automatically.
Read the review screen carefully. Some categories can include files you intend to keep, and removing downloads or previous-installation files can affect recovery options. Storage Sense is a space-management tool, not a cure for a failing drive or insufficient capacity. If free space repeatedly disappears, identify large files and apps rather than repeatedly deleting blindly.

Adjust visual effects for responsiveness
Animations, transparency, and other visual effects use system resources. On a capable PC they improve presentation; on an older or heavily loaded PC, reducing them may make window movement and menus feel quicker. The tradeoff is a plainer interface, not a measured percentage speed increase.
Turn off selected effects
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.
- Turn Animation effects off if motion is distracting or feels slow.
- Turn Transparency effects off if you prefer a simpler, more opaque interface.
You can also remove desktop background images or use a simple solid color when visual clutter is the problem. Microsoft documents an Adjust for best performance option in Windows performance settings; use it as an optional, broader reduction rather than the first change. It can disable several polish features at once, so apply it only after targeted changes fail to help.
Use Power mode deliberately
Windows 11’s power mode can favor performance when the computer is plugged in and you need maximum responsiveness, such as during a sustained workload. It increases energy consumption, can shorten laptop battery life, and may make the computer warmer.

- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Set Power mode to Best performance for the demanding session.
- Return to a balanced or battery-saving mode when mobility, fan noise, or temperature matters more.
Do not treat Best performance as a permanent default for every laptop. A power-mode change cannot compensate for a thermal problem, a failing battery, or hardware that is already at its limit.

Windows’ advertising ID is an identifier that apps can use for personalization. Turning it off limits use of that Windows identifier; it does not stop all interest-based advertising. Websites can still use cookies and other tracking methods, and Microsoft or third-party apps may have separate advertising controls.
Disable the Windows advertising ID
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > General.
- Turn off the option that allows apps to show personalized ads by using your advertising ID.
- Review any related recommendations or offers controls shown on your Windows 11 build and disable only the personalization you do not want.
These controls affect Windows and supported apps, not every service you use on the web. For browser advertising, review the browser’s cookie and privacy settings separately; for an individual app, use that app’s own account and advertising controls.

Review App diagnostics without disabling useful features blindly
The App diagnostics privacy setting controls whether supported apps can access specific information about other running processes. It is not a universal switch for all diagnostics, telemetry, or desktop software.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > App diagnostics.
- Choose whether supported apps may access the process information they need.
- If an app stops providing a feature after the change, restore permission or use that app’s own privacy settings.
Microsoft says desktop apps are not affected by this Windows setting. A work-managed PC may also show controls that an organization has configured, so a missing or locked option is not necessarily an error.
Make Windows less distracting with Notifications and Focus
Notification changes primarily improve attention, not benchmark performance. Microsoft characterizes any performance benefit from reducing notifications as small. Preserve alerts you rely on for security, work, two-factor authentication, accessibility, or time-sensitive communication.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTrim notifications by app
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Turn off notifications for apps that do not need to interrupt you.
- For apps you keep, disable only banners, sounds, or lock-screen display if you still want messages available in the notification center.
Schedule Focus
- Open Settings > System > Focus, or start a Focus session from Windows’ quick settings.
- Set a duration or schedule for concentrated work.
- Configure the allowed notification behavior so priority alerts can still reach you.
Focus is reversible and better suited to temporary concentration than globally silencing every alert. If a notification is important but badly timed, change its presentation rather than removing it completely.
Choose settings by the problem they target
| Goal | Most relevant setting | Primary tradeoff | Applicability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shorter sign-in delay | Startup apps in Settings or Task Manager | An app will not launch until you open it | Windows 11; Task Manager provides startup-impact information |
| Less ongoing app activity | Per-app background permission | No background notifications or updates when set to Never | Supported apps; many desktop apps use their own controls |
| More free disk space | Temporary files and Storage Sense | Selected temporary or recovery files may be removed | Useful when low storage is contributing to slowdown or update problems |
| More visual responsiveness | Animation, transparency, or broader visual-effects reduction | Less visual polish | Most noticeable on older or heavily loaded hardware |
| Maximum plugged-in performance | Power mode: Best performance | Higher consumption, heat, and lower battery life | Most appropriate for demanding work while connected to power |
| Less Windows ad personalization | Advertising ID and related Recommendations & offers controls | Personalization changes; other advertising methods remain | Windows 11 controls vary by build and do not govern every website or app |
| Fewer interruptions | Per-app Notifications and Focus | Potentially delayed or missed alerts | Works best when essential apps are explicitly allowed |
A safe order for applying changes
- Confirm whether you are running Windows 11 or an unsupported Windows 10 installation, and install available updates.
- Check free storage and clean reviewed temporary files if the drive is low.
- Use Task Manager to identify unusual CPU, memory, or disk use.
- Disable only unnecessary Startup apps, then restart and reassess.
- Restrict background activity for apps whose delayed updates and notifications you accept.
- Apply targeted visual-effects changes if the interface still feels sluggish.
- Use Best performance temporarily when plugged in and a demanding task requires it.
- Adjust privacy personalization, notifications, and Focus separately so you know which change produced each result.
If the PC remains slow after this sequence, persistent high resource use, failing storage, inadequate memory, overheating, malware, or aging hardware may be the limiting factor. Settings cannot reliably overcome those conditions; diagnose them before spending money on an upgrade.
