The strongest published guidance currently available is regional: the BFI London Film Festival listing gives it a UK BBFC PG certificate with warnings for flashing images and graphic violence or injury, while British Columbia classifies it Parental Guidance because several scenes involve weapons, physical assault and/or injury.
Those are local classifications, not a universal age recommendation. Check the rating where you live and consider your child’s sensitivity to crime stories, weapons, assault, injury imagery, flashing effects and a darker noir atmosphere. Published sources do not yet establish a complete account of language, sexual content, substance use, or the frequency and intensity of violence.

What Ray Gunn is about
Ray Gunn is Brad Bird’s animated detective noir set in Metropia, a giant alternate-future city imagined through the visual language of 1939. Raymond Gunn is a private investigator pulled into a case involving aliens, murder and the pop star Venus Nova. The city has an Art Deco-inspired surface and a darker underworld beneath it, with corruption and criminal investigation driving the story.

Netflix describes the film as a blend of science fiction and classic detective movies. Bird said in a Netflix Tudum interview, “It was always meant to be a blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the ’40s.” That description explains why the film’s tone matters to parents: the central setup is a murder mystery in a corrupt city, rather than a straightforward, child-centered animated adventure.

Animation identifies the film’s medium, not its intended age group. Animated movies can contain frightening imagery, mature themes or intense action, so the classification and specific warnings are more useful than the fact that the characters are drawn.
What is the age rating for Ray Gunn?
There is no single worldwide age rating. Classification agencies apply their own standards, and a festival listing is not interchangeable with a national or provincial decision. The two authoritative records currently available give parents this picture:
| Territory and source | Classification | Published advice | How parents should use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom — BFI London Film Festival listing | BBFC PG | “Contains flashing images.” “Contains scenes of graphic violence or injury.” | This is the certificate and advice shown for the UK festival listing. It should not be treated as every country’s rating. |
| British Columbia — Consumer Protection BC, decision dated September 21, 2026 | Parental Guidance | Violence; several scenes depict weapons, physical assault and/or injury. | This is the British Columbia classification record and also indicates classification in Manitoba. It is not a universal age recommendation. |
How to interpret the UK BBFC PG
For the BFI London Film Festival listing, the BBFC PG certificate is accompanied by two specific warnings: flashing images and scenes of graphic violence or injury. “PG” means parental guidance is advised under the UK system; it does not mean every child will find the film comfortable, and it does not supply a precise minimum age for an individual child.

The listing confirms that graphic violence or injury appears in scenes, but it does not describe how often those scenes occur, how long they last, how realistic they look, or whether the film builds sustained tension around them. Parents should use the warning as a prompt to consider a child’s past reactions to injury imagery rather than as a complete scene-by-scene guide.
A PG label is therefore best treated as a starting point for a family conversation. It tells you that the certifying system considers parental guidance appropriate, but it cannot account for a child’s anxiety, sensory needs, previous experiences or comfort with detective stories. Two children of the same age may respond very differently to the same sequence.
How to interpret British Columbia’s Parental Guidance decision
Consumer Protection BC classifies the film Parental Guidance and gives violence as the advisory. Its decision summary says several scenes depict weapons, physical assault and/or injury. That adds useful detail about the kinds of material a viewer may encounter, but it still does not establish the intensity, duration or narrative context of every sequence.
British Columbia’s system and the BBFC system are different. A UK PG and a British Columbia Parental Guidance decision should not be read as direct age equivalents or ranked as though one were “stricter.” Each belongs to its own jurisdiction and reflects that authority’s criteria.
The British Columbia record is a provincial classification decision dated September 21, 2026. It also indicates classification in Manitoba, but that does not turn the decision into a rating for every Canadian province or for other countries. When you are choosing a cinema screening or a streaming title, look for the notice attached to that specific listing.
What content is confirmed?
Flashing images
The BFI listing specifically warns of flashing images. This matters for two separate reasons. Flashing effects can be uncomfortable or startling for many viewers, and some people with photosensitive epilepsy may need medical guidance about exposure to rapidly changing light. The classification notice does not state the pattern, frequency or duration of the flashes. If your child has a known sensitivity to flashing lights, check the final local advisory and consider avoiding the film unless you can make an informed decision with appropriate medical advice.

The warning is not a prediction that every viewer will have a physical reaction. It is a prompt to take a known sensitivity seriously and to avoid assuming that animated effects are harmless. A child who has previously complained about strobe-like scenes, headaches or visual discomfort should be included in the decision before the opening credits.
Graphic violence or injury
The UK listing uses the phrase “graphic violence or injury.” That confirms that the film includes scenes in which violence or injuries are presented graphically, but it does not provide a detailed description of what is shown. The notice does not say whether the imagery is brief, recurring, realistic, stylized or concentrated near the climax.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBecause the warning covers either violence or injury, parents should not expect a harmless slapstick interpretation of every action scene. At the same time, the published wording does not justify assuming bloodshed, prolonged suffering or any particular type of injury. Keep the distinction clear: the presence of a warning is confirmed, while the visual detail and severity remain unspecified.
Weapons, physical assault and injury
The British Columbia record identifies weapons, physical assault and/or injury across several scenes. A child who is comfortable with cartoon action may still be unsettled by a detective story in which characters are attacked or hurt. The warning also means that parents should not assume the film’s science-fiction setting makes the action harmless or purely fantastical.
“Several scenes” indicates that these are not necessarily limited to one isolated moment, but the record does not count them or describe their sequence. A parent can prepare a child without inventing details: explain that the mystery includes dangerous confrontations and that characters may be hurt, then let the child decide whether that sounds manageable.
What has not been confirmed
The available classification records are focused on violence and flashing images. They do not establish a comprehensive account of every content category. Treat the following as unknown rather than absent:
| Content area | What the available sources establish |
|---|---|
| Language | No detailed language advisory is provided in the records described here. |
| Sexual content or romance | No comprehensive guidance is provided. The premise includes the pop star Venus Nova, but that fact alone does not establish sexual content. |
| Substance use | No detailed information is provided. |
| Violence frequency and intensity | Weapons, assault and injury are confirmed, as are scenes described as graphic violence or injury; the number, duration and intensity of scenes are not established. |
| Scary atmosphere | The noir crime premise and underworld setting indicate a darker tone, but the sources do not quantify how frightening particular scenes are. |
Do not interpret a missing warning as proof that a category does not appear. Additional advisories can be published or revised as the film receives wider releases.
This uncertainty is especially relevant for families seeking a detailed checklist. There is no verified scene-by-scene account yet for profanity, romance, drinking or drug references, deaths, jump scares or sustained menace. A responsible guide can identify those gaps without filling them with assumptions based on the noir genre or on the presence of aliens.
Is Ray Gunn suitable for your child?
No authority in the available records gives a universal “right age.” The practical decision is whether the confirmed elements and the film’s premise fit your child’s individual tolerance.

Start with your local classification
Look up the classification issued for the country, state, province or territory where you will watch. Use the local authority’s wording, because a festival certificate in one jurisdiction may differ from the final theatrical or streaming advisory in another. If the local listing adds warnings, treat those as the most relevant information for your household.
Check the exact version as well. A festival screening, a cinema booking and a streaming title may display information from different release stages. The BFI listing is useful UK context, while Consumer Protection BC’s decision is the relevant provincial record; neither should replace the notice attached to your own screening.
Consider sensitivity to crime and noir themes
The story centers on a private investigator, murder, corruption and an alien-related case. Children who become anxious about investigations, endangered characters, morally compromised adults or ominous city settings may find the atmosphere more difficult than a typical animated adventure. A child who enjoys mysteries may still need preparation for the film’s darker presentation.
You can describe the premise in neutral terms rather than promising that it is funny or frightening: a detective is investigating a dangerous case in a futuristic city. That gives a child enough context to opt in without suggesting unverified plot details.
Consider reactions to weapons and injury
Ask how your child has responded to previous films showing weapons, physical attacks or visible injuries. The classifications confirm those elements, but not their exact presentation. If even brief injury imagery causes nightmares or lingering distress, waiting for a fuller content guide is a reasonable choice.
Past behavior is often more useful than an arbitrary age cutoff. A child who can discuss fictional danger and ask for a pause may cope better than an older child who finds injury imagery particularly upsetting. This is a family judgment, not an official recommendation.
Consider flashing-image sensitivity
The UK listing’s flashing-image warning deserves separate attention from the story content. If your child has a diagnosed photosensitivity, a history of seizures triggered by light, or a strong reaction to strobe-like effects, consult a qualified clinician and review the most current local warning before viewing.
Do not infer suitability from animation alone
Animated design can make a film look family-oriented in promotional material, but it does not override the PG and Parental Guidance advisories. Treat Ray Gunn as a crime mystery with science-fiction visuals, not as an automatically safe choice for young children.
A parent checklist before watching
- Check the local listing. Confirm the rating and warnings issued where you live, rather than relying only on a foreign festival certificate.
- Read each warning literally. Note references to flashing images, graphic violence, weapons, assault and injury. Do not convert “PG” or “Parental Guidance” into a precise age number.
- Match the warnings to your child. Think about prior reactions to crime stories, attacks, injuries, flashing effects and suspenseful settings.
- Explain the premise in advance. Tell your child that the film follows a private detective investigating a case involving murder, aliens and corruption. This prevents the tone from being an unpleasant surprise.
- Choose the viewing setting. A daytime home screening gives you more control than a late-night showing or a crowded theater. At home, you can pause; in a theater, identify an easy exit before the film starts.
- Decide what you will do if the film is too intense. Agree that your child can ask to stop or leave without being pressured to finish.
For a first viewing, avoid stacking the film with other stressful events or showing it immediately before bedtime. The 119-minute runtime means a younger viewer may become tired before the story ends, and fatigue can make suspense or injury imagery feel more intense. A calm schedule also leaves time to talk afterward.

How to handle the viewing itself
- Watch for signs such as covering the eyes or ears, repeated reassurance-seeking, agitation, silence, difficulty settling afterward or reluctance to continue.
- Do not dismiss distress because the characters are animated. The warnings concern the effect of the imagery, not whether it is filmed with live actors.
- If flashing effects are a concern, stop immediately if your child reports discomfort, visual disturbance or a headache, and follow the medical advice appropriate to your child’s condition.
- If the murder or assault premise raises questions, answer plainly without adding graphic detail that the film itself has not shown.
- After viewing, ask which scenes felt exciting, confusing or frightening. A child’s response is useful information for deciding whether similar noir or crime stories are appropriate later.
In a theater, tell the child before the film begins that leaving is allowed. At home, keep the remote accessible and agree on a simple signal for pausing. These small steps do not change the content, but they give the child control if a scene becomes overwhelming.
Runtime and release information
The BFI London Film Festival listing gives the film a runtime of 119 minutes. That is nearly two hours, so tiredness may make intense scenes harder for a younger viewer to manage. Plan the viewing time accordingly, especially if the child is watching in the evening.
Netflix announced a limited theatrical release beginning December 4, 2026, followed by streaming on Netflix on December 18, 2026. These are scheduled dates and may change. Availability, final classification and warnings can vary by territory and platform. Check the listing shown in your account or local cinema rather than assuming that the announced date or a foreign rating applies everywhere.
The release plan also affects how much control parents have. A home stream can be paused or stopped, while a cinema screening cannot be rewound and may make an early exit more conspicuous. Neither format removes the need to check the applicable advisory.
Why the classification may change as release expands
The BFI entry is a London Film Festival listing, while the British Columbia record is a jurisdictional classification decision dated September 21, 2026. Different authorities may review different release materials or apply different standards. A later theatrical, broadcast or streaming listing can therefore contain additional advice, a different label or updated wording.
No primary US MPA rating is established in the available records. Parents in the United States should wait for the official rating and descriptors displayed by the relevant theater or service instead of importing the UK or British Columbia labels as though they were US classifications.
Updates are normal when a film moves from a festival to a broader release. If a new listing supplies more precise information about language, violence or flashing effects, use that newer, local notice for the decision. Until then, avoid presenting either existing record as a complete global answer.
Questions parents should still verify locally
- Does the local authority add descriptors for language, sexual content or substance use?
- Does it describe the violence as frequent, intense, realistic or disturbing?
- Does it provide a photosensitivity or strobe-effects notice beyond the general flashing-image warning?
- Is the classification for the exact theatrical or streaming version you plan to watch?
- Has the advisory been updated since the festival listing or the September 21, 2026 British Columbia decision?
Bottom line for families
Ray Gunn may suit children who are comfortable with darker animated mysteries, but it should not be selected for young viewers simply because it is animated. The UK festival listing warns of flashing images and graphic violence or injury, and British Columbia’s Parental Guidance decision cites weapons, physical assault and/or injury in several scenes. Those warnings, combined with a murder-and-corruption noir premise, call for an individual decision based on your child’s sensitivities and your local classification.
