Why Proton compatibility does not answer a PS5 compatibility question
Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux through Steam. Valve describes it as using a modified version of Wine and graphics API implementations (Valve’s Proton documentation).

Valve’s official game-compatibility review discussed here applies to Steam Deck, while PlayStation’s PC support information covers PlayStation gaming on PC—not Proton on PS5 (Steam Deck compatibility ratings; PlayStation games on PC). The reviewed official sources do not document a PS5 Proton method or a list of PS5 Proton-compatible games. How to check whether a game works on PS5
For a PS5 playability question, check PlayStation’s official game and service information for that title and platform. Do not treat a Steam Deck rating or a ProtonDB report as PlayStation compatibility confirmation: those resources address Linux/Steam Deck use, not PS5 certification.

How to check a Windows game for Proton on Steam Deck or Linux
- Confirm the device and operating system. Proton compatibility resources apply to Linux systems, including the Steam Deck context described by Valve. They do not establish PS5 support.
- Check the Steam listing or library rating. For reviewed Steam titles, Valve displays Steam Deck compatibility details on the game’s store page and in the Steam library. These ratings assess the Deck experience, not a general guarantee for every Linux device.
- Look for recent community reports. ProtonDB collects user-submitted Linux and Steam Deck reports, which can provide game-specific results and configuration suggestions. Reports are community evidence, not an official rating or guarantee (ProtonDB).
- Check operating-system and hardware requirements. A compatibility rating does not replace verifying that the system meets the game’s hardware requirements and supports its listed operating system; Steam Support advises checking both (Steam Support: system requirements).
- Review the details that can affect play. A game that launches may still have problems with features, middleware, or anti-cheat. Valve includes middleware and anti-cheat support in its Deck review criteria, and its review process is ongoing as games, updates, and device features change.
How to interpret compatibility results
- Official rating: useful for the Steam Deck experience of a reviewed title; it is not a PS5 result.
- Community report: useful for seeing other users’ Linux or Deck setups and troubleshooting, but results may differ with game updates, hardware, and configuration.
- Requirements and anti-cheat: can explain why a title fails or has limited functionality even when it starts successfully.
Compatibility changes over time, so check the date and setup described in a report before relying on it. ProtonDB’s compatibility totals also change and should not be read as a fixed measure of PS5 support.
