For most people, the safest choice is to leave Windows Features unchanged unless an app, device, or task specifically requires a component. Turn on only the named feature, check that your Windows edition and PC support it, and restart if Windows asks. There is no universal set of checkboxes that improves every PC’s speed or security.
What “Turn Windows features on or off” controls
The Windows Features dialog lets you enable or disable optional Windows components, including some compatibility, virtualization, networking, and administration tools. To open it, search Start for Windows features and select Turn Windows features on or off. Some capabilities are managed elsewhere—for example, the Media Feature Pack is installed through Optional Features—and availability can depend on your Windows version, edition, device, or organization’s policies.

A checkbox is not a general-purpose optimization switch. Change one when you have a specific reason, such as an app asking for .NET Framework 3.5 or a virtualization workload requiring Virtual Machine Platform. If nothing is missing or requesting a component, leaving the settings alone is a sensible default.
Which Windows features might you need?
| Feature | Consider it when | Check before enabling |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual Machine Platform | An app or workload you intend to use requires Windows virtualization support. | Check the app’s requirements and whether hardware virtualization is enabled in UEFI/BIOS. A restart may be required. Microsoft’s virtualization guide describes the Windows Features steps. |
| Hyper-V and related virtualization features | You need to create or manage virtual machines, or use software that depends on the Windows hypervisor. | Availability depends on edition and device. Client Hyper-V is not supported in S mode; Microsoft says it is supported on Snapdragon PCs when S mode is disabled. Verify current requirements for your release and application. Microsoft’s S mode FAQ covers this limitation. |
| .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) | A legacy app explicitly requires this component. | First check whether an updated version of the app is available. The Windows Communication Foundation activation subfeatures are generally unnecessary unless a developer or server administrator requires them. Microsoft’s instructions flag Windows 11 26H1 and later, so check the guidance for your installed build. Microsoft’s .NET Framework 3.5 instructions explain the options. |
| Media Feature Pack | You use a Windows N edition and need media technologies or apps omitted from that edition. | Install it as an Optional Feature. Some features may require reinstalling hardware drivers afterward. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack guidance explains the process. |
| Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) | You administer Windows Server roles, shared folders, quotas, or other remote resources from a Windows client. | Install only the management tool you need. The installation path and availability vary by tool and Windows version. Microsoft’s RSAT documentation lists the options. |
| SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support | A specific older server, appliance, or workflow depends on SMBv1 and an administrator has confirmed that need. | SMBv1 is a legacy file-sharing component. Prefer current protocols where supported; do not enable it speculatively. Ask your network administrator if you are unsure. Microsoft’s SMBv1 documentation explains how to inspect and manage its components. |
These examples are not a complete inventory of every feature in every Windows build. If an app names a component, use the exact feature name or error message to find instructions for your installed Windows version.

How to decide whether to change a feature
- Identify the need. Note the app, device, or workflow that requires the component. If nothing is missing or asking for it, you may not need to change anything.
- Check your Windows version and edition. Availability can differ by Windows release, edition, architecture, and management policy. A missing checkbox may reflect a limitation or a different settings location rather than a fault. Microsoft’s S mode FAQ, Media Feature Pack guidance, and Windows servicing information describe examples of edition and rollout differences.
- Select the named component only. Expand an entry if needed and follow the app’s or Microsoft’s instructions. Some parent entries contain multiple subfeatures; do not select a bundle based on a guess.
- Check setup requirements. You may need administrator access, additional installation files, a firmware setting, or a restart. Follow any prompt Windows displays.
- Record the original state. On a work or school PC, follow your organization’s policy and ask IT before changing managed virtualization or networking options.
- Review temporary changes later. If you enabled an optional component for a one-off task, first check whether another app or workflow still relies on it before disabling it.
Important examples and limitations
Virtualization may need firmware support
Virtualization lets a Windows device emulate another operating system, such as Android or Linux. Microsoft’s steps are to search for Windows features, open Turn Windows features on or off, select Virtual Machine Platform, and restart if asked. Firmware menus vary by manufacturer, so change only the setting the instructions call for. Microsoft notes: “Many Windows devices already have virtualization enabled, so you might not need to follow these steps.” Read Microsoft’s virtualization guidance.
Having one virtualization component available does not guarantee that every virtualization product is supported on every PC or edition. In particular, Client Hyper-V is not supported while Windows is in S mode; Microsoft describes support for Snapdragon Windows 11 PCs when S mode is disabled. Check the requirements for both your device and the software you want to run. See Microsoft’s S mode FAQ.

.NET Framework 3.5 is for older apps
This component exists to support apps targeting older .NET Framework versions. Microsoft recommends looking for an updated version of the software first. If the app still requires it, use Windows Features and select .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0). Only select the Windows Communication Foundation activation options when a development or server-administration task requires them. Check Microsoft’s current instructions for your Windows build.

Windows N editions omit specified media technologies, Windows Media Player, and certain preinstalled media apps. Microsoft says the Media Feature Pack restores the excluded technologies and is installed through Optional Features in current Windows 10 and Windows 11 instructions. Some features may require hardware drivers to be reinstalled after installation. See the Media Feature Pack instructions.

SMBv1 is a compatibility decision, not a speculative fix
Microsoft documents ways to inspect and toggle SMBv1 client and server components through Windows Features or optional-feature commands. Whether a particular home or business network still depends on SMBv1 is specific to that network; the documentation does not establish that for your devices. Leave it off unless a known legacy system requires it, and consult the network administrator on a managed network. Read Microsoft’s SMBv1 guidance.
A feature can vary on managed or recently updated PCs
Windows servicing can introduce features over time, and some features on organization-managed devices may be turned off or controlled by policy. As a result, what appears in Windows Features can reflect the installed build and how the PC is managed. Microsoft explains Windows feature updates and servicing.
