Choose Windows Sandbox to try an app or file in a temporary Windows desktop that resets when you close it. Choose Hyper-V to create and manage virtual machines whose changes you keep. Choose Virtual Machine Platform when a feature such as WSL 2 needs Windows virtualization support; it is not a replacement for Hyper-V Manager. The right choice depends on your task, Windows edition, and hardware.
Which Windows virtualization feature matches your task?
| Feature | Use it for | What happens to changes? | Key requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Sandbox | Quickly testing software or opening a file in an isolated Windows desktop | Temporary. Closing Sandbox removes its software, files, and state; the next launch starts clean. | Supported Pro, Enterprise, or Education edition and hardware virtualization. Networking is on by default. Microsoft Sandbox FAQ |
| Hyper-V | Creating and managing conventional virtual machines | Persistent unless you revert the VM to an earlier state. | Client Hyper-V installation is documented for Pro or Enterprise, not Home. Hardware must support the required virtualization features. Microsoft installation guidance |
| Virtual Machine Platform | Providing virtualization support to workloads such as WSL 2 | It is an optional Windows component used by another workload, not a standalone VM manager. | For WSL 2, use it with Windows Subsystem for Linux. WSL is supported on Home and other supported desktop editions. Microsoft WSL FAQ |
When should you choose Windows Sandbox?
Use Sandbox when you want a throwaway Windows environment for a quick test rather than a VM you plan to maintain. It is designed to launch with little setup, and its disposable state makes it useful for checking how an app behaves without keeping its changes in the sandbox after you close it. Microsoft’s Sandbox overview describes the feature and its isolation model.
Account for networking before testing an untrusted app
Sandbox networking is enabled by default. Microsoft warns that this can expose an untrusted app to your internal network. If the test does not need network access, configure a Sandbox .wsb file to disable networking before launching it; see Microsoft’s Sandbox configuration guidance. Disabling networking reduces that exposure but does not make an untrusted program harmless.
When do you need Hyper-V?
Choose Hyper-V when you need a conventional virtual machine you configure and keep—for example, a guest operating system with files and settings that should still be there next time. Compared with the quick disposable Sandbox, a full VM takes more setup and requires planning for processor time, memory, and storage. Its changes persist unless you deliberately revert them.

Check Windows edition and hardware first
Microsoft’s client Hyper-V installation guidance lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise; the Hyper-V role cannot be installed on Home. If Hyper-V is missing, check the edition before troubleshooting firmware or hardware. Hyper-V also requires a 64-bit processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT), VM Monitor Mode extensions, hardware virtualization enabled in BIOS or UEFI, and enough memory for both Windows and the guest VMs. Review Microsoft’s Hyper-V hardware requirements for the full details.
When is Virtual Machine Platform enough?
Enable Virtual Machine Platform when a workload such as WSL 2 calls for it. WSL 2 uses this optional virtualization component together with Windows Subsystem for Linux; it does not require the full Hyper-V management feature set or Hyper-V Manager. WSL 2 is available on supported Windows desktop editions including Home, so a Home user can use WSL 2 without installing the client Hyper-V role. See Microsoft’s WSL installation guide for current installation steps and supported configurations.

Check compatibility before turning on a feature
- Identify your Windows edition. Use Settings > System > About and check Windows specifications. Hyper-V’s documented client installation path is for Pro or Enterprise; WSL 2 is supported on supported desktop editions including Home.
- Confirm the workload. Pick Sandbox for a temporary Windows test, Hyper-V for managed persistent VMs, or Virtual Machine Platform with Windows Subsystem for Linux for WSL 2.
- Check virtualization support. Confirm virtualization is enabled in BIOS or UEFI. For Hyper-V, verify SLAT and VM Monitor Mode support as well. Microsoft’s requirements page says
Systeminfo.execan report Hyper-V requirements; if all listed values are Yes, the system can run the role. - Plan resources and exposure. A full VM needs allocated memory and storage in addition to host resources. For Sandbox tests involving untrusted software, decide whether networking is necessary because it is enabled by default.
What about the newer Windows Sandbox app?
Microsoft documents a newer Windows Sandbox app beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2. Store delivery provides a revamped interface and runtime controls for clipboard redirection, audio and video input, and folder sharing. Microsoft’s documented prerequisites include Windows 11 24H2 with a specified update and internet access for Microsoft Store and Windows Update. Because the exact update requirement can change, check the current Windows Sandbox versions documentation against your installed Windows build before relying on those newer controls.
