On a new Windows 11 OLED laptop, set brightness for the room, decide whether adaptive brightness and HDR suit your work, and configure screen-off and refresh-rate options for your routine. Treat OLED-care features as sensible precautions—not guarantees against burn-in. The right choices depend on the laptop’s hardware, drivers, display, and manufacturer software; there is no universal brightness percentage or color profile for every OLED screen.
Set brightness for your room and task
Go to Settings > System > Display > Brightness. Adjust brightness to a comfortable level for the surrounding light rather than habitually leaving it at maximum. ASUS recommends matching brightness to ambient conditions, but no universal percentage or nit level fits every laptop. Windows may also offer automatic adjustment based on ambient light or on-screen content, depending on the device. Microsoft’s Windows display guidance explains the available controls.

Choose whether content-adaptive brightness is helpful
If the screen’s brightness or contrast shifts distract you—or you need a consistent appearance for photo or video work—look for Change brightness based on content in the Brightness settings. On supported PCs, its choices are Off, Always, and On Battery Only. Turning it off can reduce battery life, so choose based on whether stable appearance or power savings matters more. Ambient-light adjustment is a separate behavior: it uses a sensor to respond to room lighting and is available only when hardware and software support it. Microsoft Learn describes adaptive brightness; HDR displays may respond more slowly to ambient-light changes.

Open Settings > System > Display > Night light. Its Strength slider warms the screen, while Schedule lets you choose sunset-to-sunrise or custom hours. Night light is an optional evening viewing preference, not an OLED-care requirement. Because it changes the image’s color balance, turn it off when you need an unshifted color presentation.

Choose HDR based on the display and content
If Windows shows the option, open Settings > System > Display > HDR. Microsoft describes HDR as offering greater brightness and color capabilities than SDR, but the exact controls and capabilities vary by display. Enable it when your laptop supports it and you want Windows HDR behavior or HDR content; otherwise, use the desktop appearance you prefer. The available guidance does not establish that HDR should always be on—or off—for OLED longevity. Microsoft’s display guide covers HDR settings.
Keep the factory color profile unless you have a reason to change it
To inspect profiles, go to Settings > System > Display > Color profile. Where available, Calibrate display runs a workflow that creates a profile for the display on which you use it. The suitable profile depends on the panel and the work you do; there is no single profile recommended for every OLED laptop. Don’t replace the factory profile without a specific calibration or color-management need.
Configure refresh and screen-off behavior for everyday use
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and look for Dynamic refresh rate if your hardware supports it. Windows can lower refresh during static tasks to save power. If you prioritize smooth motion, consider whether that trade-off suits your use.

Use manufacturer OLED-care features as precautions
OLED maintenance advice and software vary by maker and model. ASUS recommends matching brightness to ambient light, setting the screen to turn off when idle, using an animated screensaver on a dark background, and auto-hiding the taskbar to avoid displaying it for prolonged periods. Its OLED Care feature is available through MyASUS only on some supported models. A model-specific ASUS manual also recommends Dark mode. These are conservative precautions, not guarantees against panel aging; taskbar auto-hide is not mandatory, and a dark desktop does not eliminate risk. Check your laptop maker’s documentation and use only care features supported by your model. ASUS’s screensaver and maintenance guidance and its notebook manual and support materials provide model-dependent details.

- Set brightness to suit the room; avoid treating maximum brightness as a default.
- Turn off content-adaptive brightness if its shifts interfere with your work, keeping the possible battery-life cost in mind.
- Schedule Night light only if you prefer a warmer evening image; disable it for color-sensitive viewing.
- Use HDR when supported and wanted for your content or desktop experience.
- Leave the color profile unchanged unless calibration or color management gives you a clear reason to adjust it.
- Choose a screen-off timeout and, if available and suitable, Dynamic refresh rate.
- Check the laptop maker’s instructions for OLED-care options rather than assuming another brand’s software applies.
