For routine storage cleanup, use Windows’ Settings > System > Storage tools and review each category before removing it. Leave the system file cache and Delivery Optimization cache to Windows. Clear Windows Update, Microsoft Store, or DNS caches only when troubleshooting the matching problem; they are not general-purpose disk-cleanup targets.
Which Windows caches are safe to clear?
“Cache” covers several different things in Windows. Some are removable files that Windows identifies in cleanup tools; others support memory management, updates, Store apps, or name resolution. Choose an action based on the problem you are solving, not simply because a folder or setting contains the word “cache.”

| Item | What to do | Why or when |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary files and thumbnails shown in Windows cleanup tools | Review the categories, then remove the ones you understand. | For ordinary storage cleanup; Windows shows categories and estimated space. |
| Delivery Optimization files | Usually leave them alone; use Disk Cleanup if you need the space. | Windows clears this cache automatically, including when it needs room. |
| Windows Update cache | Clear only as a targeted update-error troubleshooting step. | Corrupt cached update files can cause update errors. |
| Microsoft Store cache | Use the documented reset steps only for the specific Store Temp-folder problem. | This is not routine PC cleanup. |
| DNS resolver cache | Flush it only when troubleshooting name-resolution problems. | It helps resolve names; clearing it does not meaningfully free disk space. |
| System file cache / standby memory | Leave it under Windows management. | Windows uses it to manage file data in memory; forcibly emptying it is not routine maintenance. |
| Previous Windows installation(s) / Windows.old | Keep it if you may want to roll back after an upgrade. | Removing it deletes the files needed for rollback. |
| Offline Files | Review before deleting. | They can be local copies of network files used while disconnected. |
These distinctions follow Microsoft’s guidance for storage cleanup, Windows Update troubleshooting, Store Temp-folder troubleshooting, DNS commands, and file caching.

Disk Cleanup is another built-in option: it displays file categories and descriptions. Check the selected boxes rather than assuming every default selection is right for you; thumbnails, for example, may be selected by default. Microsoft also provides Storage Sense and cleanup guidance. Prefer these supported interfaces to manually deleting unfamiliar system folders.
Why you should usually leave some caches alone
System file cache and standby memory
Windows caches data read from disks in system memory and uses a write-back cache for file writes. Windows determines when cached writes are committed to disk; cached pages may stay in the cache working set or move to the standby list, where they count as available memory. Windows manages this system file cache continuously. Leave it alone for routine maintenance rather than using a utility or manual procedure that promises a speed boost by emptying memory caches. Microsoft’s file-caching documentation describes the mechanism.

Delivery Optimization cache
Delivery Optimization supplies updates and other content from Windows Update, Microsoft Store, and Microsoft content services. Microsoft says its cache clears automatically after a short time or when cached content is taking too much disk space. If you need additional room, select Delivery Optimization Files in Disk Cleanup; do not hunt for and erase its cache folder manually. See Microsoft’s Delivery Optimization guidance.
Clear a cache only for the problem it addresses
Windows Update: update errors or suspected corrupt cached files
Microsoft identifies corrupt cached update files as a possible cause of update errors. For that specific troubleshooting case, its procedure is to stop the Windows Update service, delete the contents inside C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and start the service again. Do not treat this as scheduled or routine cleaning; follow Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance, including its advice about the Windows Update troubleshooter.

Microsoft Store: a Temp folder that refills with Store package files
Use this path only for the specific symptom Microsoft describes: after cleanup recommendations, the Temp folder quickly fills again with application package files used by Microsoft Store. The documented sequence is to reset Microsoft Store, clear its cache by running wsreset.exe, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and restart the computer. This is a symptom-specific repair, not a reason to clear Store data whenever you clean a PC. See Microsoft’s low-space troubleshooting guidance.
DNS resolver: stale or failing name lookups
The DNS Client resolver cache stores recently obtained DNS records and entries loaded from the local Hosts file. Windows checks it to resolve frequently queried names before asking configured DNS servers. To inspect it, run ipconfig /displaydns; to clear and reset it while troubleshooting name resolution, run ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt. This is a network troubleshooting action, not a way to recover meaningful drive space. Microsoft documents both commands in its ipconfig reference.
Cleanup choices that affect recovery or offline access
Previous Windows installation(s) / Windows.old
After an upgrade, Windows ordinarily deletes the previous installation after ten days. Before that happens, cleanup can reclaim its space, but removing it deletes the files that allow a rollback to the previous Windows version; that deletion cannot be undone to restore the rollback option. Keep it if you may need to return to the earlier version. Microsoft explains this trade-off in its storage cleanup guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Offline Files
Disk Cleanup describes Offline Files as local copies of network files kept available while you are disconnected. If you rely on that access, consider the effect before removing those copies. See Microsoft’s Disk Cleanup documentation.
Match the cleanup to the symptom
- Low drive space: review Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations in Settings, or use Disk Cleanup.
- Windows Update errors: use Microsoft’s update troubleshooting steps; clear the update cache only as part of the documented service-stop and restart procedure.
- Store-related Temp folder refilling: use the documented Store reset and
wsreset.exepath for that specific case. - DNS lookup trouble: inspect or flush the resolver cache with the documented
ipconfigcommands. - System file or Delivery Optimization cache: normally let Windows manage it.
Windows’ cleanup tools estimate recoverable space for the categories on your own device; that figure is not a general cache size or a guaranteed performance improvement.
