Which Windows 11 Startup Apps Should You Disable to Save Memory?

Disable only identified startup apps you do not need at sign-in. Task Manager’s impact labels measure startup CPU and disk activity, not ongoing RAM use.

Disable only startup apps you recognize and do not need as soon as you sign in. Start with optional enabled apps marked High or Medium in Task Manager, then check whether the change actually reduces memory use on your PC. Those labels measure startup CPU and disk activity—not how much RAM an app uses after startup—so they cannot tell you how many megabytes you will save.

Which startup apps are worth disabling?

There is no universal list of Windows 11 apps that everyone should turn off. The useful candidates are apps that are enabled to launch at sign-in, that you have identified, and whose features you do not need immediately. Examples might include optional launchers or apps you open only occasionally, if they appear in your list; their category alone does not prove that disabling them is safe.

Keep automatic launch enabled for apps whose immediate alerts, file synchronization, security functions, or hardware features you rely on. If you do not recognize an entry or its publisher, find out what it does before changing it. Microsoft does not publish a universal safe-to-disable list.

How to find and disable startup apps

Windows has two built-in ways to manage startup apps. Task Manager shows startup-impact information; Settings offers a simpler on/off list. The apps displayed depend on what is installed and how it is configured.

  1. Use Task Manager: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then select Startup apps. Review each enabled entry’s name, publisher where shown, and startup impact. Select an app and choose Disable.
  2. Or use Settings: Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup, then switch off the app you have chosen.
  3. Test the change: Restart or sign out and back in, then check whether the app’s automatic behavior and your PC’s resource use changed.

Microsoft documents both controls in its guide to configuring startup applications in Windows.

How to interpret Task Manager’s startup-impact labels

Use the labels to decide which entries to investigate first, not as a ranking of RAM use. Microsoft bases startup impact on an app’s CPU and disk activity when Windows starts:

  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Task Manager label Microsoft’s stated threshold How to use it
Low Total CPU use under 300 milliseconds and total disk use under 292 kilobytes. Usually lower priority if you are choosing which entries to review first.
Medium Below one second of CPU use and below 3 megabytes of disk use, while exceeding at least one Low threshold. Consider disabling it if it is optional and not needed right after sign-in.
High More than one second of CPU use or more than 3 megabytes of disk use. Prioritize reviewing it if it is enabled and unnecessary at sign-in.
Not measured No impact data is available. Do not treat missing data as proof that the app has no effect.

These are Microsoft’s thresholds for startup CPU and disk activity, not estimates of memory saved. The labels can help explain startup delay or activity, but an app with a high label is not necessarily the biggest ongoing RAM user. For the definitions, see Microsoft’s startup-app guidance.

How to tell whether disabling an app saves memory

Change one or a few entries at a time, then compare the PC under similar conditions after signing in again. In Task Manager, use Processes to inspect individual processes and Performance to see overall memory use. Microsoft recommends monitoring CPU, memory, and disk usage when diagnosing slow performance; actual results depend on the apps installed and the PC.

Rank #3
  • Note which apps and work were running before comparing, so the before-and-after check is meaningful.
  • Look for a change in memory use as well as any improvement in the behavior you care about, such as sign-in responsiveness.
  • If a needed feature stops working, re-enable that startup entry.

Microsoft says, “Apps that run at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage.” Its guidance does not promise a particular RAM reduction for disabling any category or app. See Microsoft’s tips to improve PC performance.

Startup apps and background permissions are different

Disabling an app in the startup list prevents it from launching automatically at sign-in; it does not necessarily change whether the app can perform background activity through a separate setting. Microsoft’s background-app privacy guidance notes that desktop apps do not appear in the Installed apps background-permission list and should be managed through their own settings. Do not assume that changing one control changes the other. Read Microsoft’s Windows background-app guidance for the distinction.

When a clean boot is—and is not—the right tool

A clean boot is a separate diagnostic procedure for troubleshooting problems, not the routine way to save memory by trimming startup apps. Microsoft cautions that clean boot can temporarily remove functionality and provides steps to restore normal startup. Use its clean-boot instructions when you are diagnosing a specific issue and are prepared to follow the recovery steps.
