For reliable 4K HDR playback, connect the player’s main HDMI output to a TV input that supports the disc’s video format, then enable that input’s enhanced HDMI mode if required. Every device in the video path—including the cable and any receiver or soundbar—must support the signal. For sound, either use the TV’s audio or route the player through a compatible audio system.
Check what each device and HDMI port supports
Before connecting anything, check the manuals or port specifications for the player, TV, and any receiver or soundbar. Confirm support for the resolution and frame rate you want, the relevant HDR format, HDCP, and audio passthrough. A TV may support its full bandwidth or advanced HDMI formats on only certain inputs, so use the port specified by its manufacturer.

For a 4K/60p signal, Panasonic specifies an 18 Gbps HDMI cable and connected equipment supporting HDCP 2.2, 4K/60p (4:4:4), and HDR. Sony recommends an 18 Gbps High Speed or Premium High Speed cable for its UBP-X700/K player family. These are compatibility requirements and recommendations, not a reason to replace a cable that already works at the required bandwidth. Panasonic’s UHD Blu-ray HDMI connection guidance and Sony’s UBP-X700/K connection guidance describe the respective examples.
Connect the player directly to the TV

Connect the player’s main HDMI output—the one that carries both video and audio—to a compatible HDMI input on the TV.

Select that HDMI input on the TV. If the player offers an automatic resolution setting, start with Auto; Sony recommends it for the cited player family. Panasonic’s DP-UB820 manual also lists Auto, 4K60p Output, and 24p Output, with output dependent on the connected device’s capabilities.
-
On the TV, open the settings for the input used by the player and enable its advanced HDMI mode if required. Depending on the manufacturer, this may be called Enhanced Format, UHD Color, or deep color. Sony’s guidance says supported 4K/HDR devices may require Enhanced Format on the relevant TV input. Sony’s TV guidance for 4K/HDR input settings explains its model-specific procedure.
Menu labels and available formats vary by model and region; use the manual for the exact player and TV rather than assuming that a setting with a similar name behaves identically.

Choose how to route audio
The right connection depends on whether you use TV speakers, a receiver, or a soundbar. These paths trade simplicity against how much responsibility the TV has for passing audio through.
| Connection | When it makes sense | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Player → TV → ARC/eARC audio system | You want a simple video connection to the TV. | The TV’s audio passthrough and ARC/eARC support must handle the formats you want. |
| Player → receiver or soundbar → TV | You want the audio system to receive and decode the player’s audio directly. | The receiver or soundbar must pass the player’s required 4K/HDR signal to the TV. |
| Player → TV, with a separate audio connection to the audio system | The receiver or soundbar cannot pass the required HDR or enhanced 4K signal. | The audio format depends on the TV’s audio output and the separate connection’s capabilities. |
Using TV speakers
Make sure the TV is connected to the player’s combined video-and-audio HDMI output. On Sony’s UBP-X700/K, OUT 1 carries video and audio, while OUT 2 is audio only; the support guidance specifies OUT 1 and HDMI Audio Output set to Auto or HDMI1 for TV sound. The menu and port arrangement are model-specific. Sony’s UBP-X700/K sound troubleshooting guidance covers this example.
Using a receiver or soundbar in the HDMI path
Connect the player’s HDMI output to an input on the receiver or soundbar, then connect its HDMI output to the TV input that supports the desired signal. Enable the receiver’s and TV’s advanced HDMI formats on the relevant ports if their manuals require it. If the receiver or soundbar cannot pass the needed 4K/HDR format, connect the player to the TV instead and send audio separately; the formats available over that route depend on the TV and audio system. Sony’s receiver and soundbar passthrough troubleshooting guide describes this workaround.

For a model-specific example, Panasonic’s DP-UB820/UB9000 instructions route the player to the soundbar and the soundbar to the TV. For Atmos/TrueHD in that setup, Panasonic specifies Dolby Audio and DTS/DTS-HD as Bitstream, Secondary Audio Off, and TV sound format or passthrough configured for the soundbar. Follow the manuals for your own equipment: these settings are not universal, and optical or ARC connections may have different format limits. Panasonic’s DP-UB820/UB9000 soundbar connection instructions give the full example.

Match HDR settings to the disc and display
HDR depends on a compatible disc, player, connection, and display; a setting cannot create HDR support in a component that lacks it. Check which HDR formats the disc and display support, then use the corresponding player and TV settings.
Panasonic’s DP-UB820 manual says Dolby Vision requires a compatible connected device and disc, and HDR10+ also requires compatible equipment and media. Its manual says HDR10+ takes precedence when both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are enabled and the specified conditions are met. Sony documents that the cited UBP-X700/K adjusts HDR output to SDR when connected to a non-HDR TV. These behaviors apply to the named models, not every 4K player. Panasonic DP-UB820 operating instructions and Sony’s UBP-X700/K guidance provide those model-specific details.

There is no sound from the TV
Check that the player is connected to its video-and-audio HDMI output, not an audio-only output. For the cited Sony UBP-X700/K family, use OUT 1 and set HDMI Audio Output to Auto or HDMI1; selecting HDMI2 requires a device connected to OUT 2.
The soundbar does not show Atmos or TrueHD
Verify that the player feeds the soundbar’s HDMI input, the soundbar connects to the TV’s ARC/eARC port as directed by its manual, and the correct input is selected. Panasonic’s DP-UB820/UB9000 example also uses Bitstream for Dolby and DTS formats. Check the manuals for the specific soundbar, TV, and player to confirm that the full route supports the format.
The picture disappears when routed through an AVR
Check whether the receiver supports the player’s output mode and whether its HDMI signal format is configured appropriately. A direct player-to-TV connection can help isolate receiver passthrough as the cause.
