Which Windows 11 Settings Should You Change After Setup?

A practical Windows 11 setup checklist: what to review, where to find it, and the trade-offs to understand before changing settings.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

After setting up Windows 11, review updates, app permissions, encryption and its recovery key, backups, startup behavior, notifications, and storage cleanup. Change only what fits your needs: disabling every background task or alert can cost you updates and useful warnings, while automatic cleanup or cloud sync can affect your files.

Start with Windows Update

Open Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates. Keep Windows Update available so the PC can receive updates and security patches; Microsoft describes it as an essential service. There is no single active-hours or restart schedule that suits every user, so choose one that fits how you use the PC. Microsoft: Essential services and connected experiences for Windows.

Review what apps can access

Open Settings > Privacy & security, then check permissions such as location, camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar. Allow access where an app needs it for a feature you use; switch it off when it does not. Labels and available controls can differ by Windows 11 build.

These controls mainly govern Microsoft Store apps. Traditional desktop applications may not appear in the permission lists or follow the same toggles, so check their own settings and privacy information as well. Microsoft: Windows privacy settings that apps use and Windows desktop apps and privacy.

Check encryption and recovery-key access

Look for Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption. If the option is available, check whether encryption is on and make sure you can retrieve its recovery key before relying on it. Device Encryption enables BitLocker for the operating-system and fixed drives.

Availability depends on the device and account setup. On supported setups, signing in with a Microsoft or work or school account turns encryption on and associates a recovery key with that account; a local-account setup does not turn it on automatically. The setting may be unavailable if the PC lacks prerequisites or you are not an administrator. Microsoft: Device Encryption in Windows.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Choose what Windows backs up

Open Windows Backup or go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. Decide whether to sync Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music to OneDrive, and which settings to include. Available settings can include installed apps, accessibility, accounts and Wi-Fi information, and personalization. Personalization backup requires OneDrive sign-in and enough available storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a choice about syncing selected folders and settings, not a complete image backup of the PC. Review what will be synced and where before turning options on. Microsoft: Back up and restore with Windows Backup.

Trim startup apps without breaking useful behavior

Go to Settings > Apps > Startup and disable automatic launch for apps you do not need when you sign in. Task Manager’s Startup apps view also shows startup impact information. This is a way to control what opens at sign-in, not a reason to disable every listed app. Microsoft: Configure Startup applications in Windows.

For supported apps, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [app] > Advanced options > Background app permissions. Never can stop background notifications and updates; Power optimized lets Windows manage activity while still allowing periodic updates and notifications. Desktop apps may have separate controls in their own settings. Microsoft: Windows background apps and your privacy.

Reduce interruptions, not important alerts

In Settings > System > Notifications, adjust notifications by app, including banners, sounds, lock-screen content, and priority. You can use Do Not Disturb on a schedule or have it activate during activities such as gaming, full-screen use, or display duplication, rather than muting everything all the time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Security distinguishes informational notifications from alerts that need immediate action; keep the urgent alerts enabled. Work or school administrators may manage notification settings on an organization-controlled device. Microsoft: Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows and Windows Security App Settings.

Inspect Storage Sense before automating cleanup

Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense and review its schedule and deletion rules before enabling automatic cleanup. With its defaults, Storage Sense runs when the device is low on space and cleans temporary files. Recycle Bin contents may be removed after a configured period.

Downloads and cloud content are not cleaned unless you set rules for them. Storage Sense works on the system drive, so check the selected rules rather than assuming it will clean every drive or folder. Microsoft: Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

Decide whether Find my device is worth enabling

If locating a lost PC matters to you, review Settings > Privacy & security > Find my device and Location. Find my device requires an administrator account signed in with a Microsoft account and device location enabled. Location can also help Windows set the time zone automatically, and you can review which apps have access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enabling location is a privacy choice as well as a prerequisite for this recovery feature. Microsoft: Essential services and connected experiences for Windows and Windows location service and privacy.

Choose based on the trade-off

  • Privacy and convenience: Limit app permissions and location to what you need; remember that cloud backup syncs selected data to OneDrive.
  • Encryption and recovery: Check encryption status and recovery-key access together.
  • Automatic maintenance and control: Choose startup and background behavior selectively, and understand Storage Sense deletion rules before enabling them.
  • Focus and awareness: Filter routine notifications while retaining security and time-sensitive alerts.
  • Personal and managed devices: A work or school policy may control or lock settings that are available on a personal PC.

Windows 11 labels and options vary by build, hardware, account type, and organization policy. If a path or toggle is missing, use the setting name in Windows Settings search and follow the labels shown on your device.
