For most personal PCs, Windows 11 Home is the right starting point. Choose Pro when you need a specific capability such as BitLocker Drive Encryption, Remote Desktop, or joining a domain or Microsoft Entra ID. Enterprise and Education are organization-focused editions; LTSC is intended for specialized deployments, not as a general-purpose way to avoid updates.
Windows 11 editions at a glance

When Windows 11 Home is enough
Home suits ordinary personal computing: web browsing, documents, media, and typical home applications. Do not upgrade simply because Pro sounds more secure or businesslike. The practical reason to choose Pro is that you need one of its particular features or an organizational requirement calls for it.

Home does not support deferring feature updates. Microsoft lists 24 months of servicing for each annual Home release. That is a support window for a particular release, not a promise that every PC will receive updates on the same day.
What Pro adds—and how to move to it
Features that can justify Pro
- BitLocker Drive Encryption: relevant when you need this drive-encryption capability. Check the PC’s hardware and configuration requirements as well as the edition.
- Remote Desktop: useful when your setup requires the Windows Remote Desktop host capability; confirm the intended configuration before buying.
- Domain or Microsoft Entra ID join: relevant when an organization’s network or identity setup requires joining the device.
Microsoft describes these as Pro’s advanced security and business-networking features; it does not follow that every user needs Pro or that Pro makes a PC universally faster or safer. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 Pro overview for the edition’s listed capabilities.
#1 Best Overall
- STREAMLIMED AND INTUITIVE UI | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
- JOIN YOUR BUSINESS OR SCHOOL DOMAIN for easy access to network files, servers, and printers.
- OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC WITH NO PRIOR VERSION of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
- OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE PRODUCT SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
Upgrade an activated Home PC
- Check the installed edition and activation status in Settings > System > Activation. Microsoft’s Store upgrade flow detects whether Home is activated.
- If Home is activated, use the Microsoft Store option in Activation to move to Pro. Microsoft says, “The best way to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro is through the Microsoft Store.” See Microsoft’s Home-to-Pro upgrade instructions.
- If you already have a valid Pro product key, Microsoft also documents entering it through Activation settings. Follow Microsoft’s Windows activation instructions.
Confirm the edition, activation state, and applicable license terms before purchasing an upgrade. For commercial licensing, Microsoft lists Pro, Enterprise, and Enterprise LTSC offerings, but the overview is not a substitute for the terms that apply to a particular buyer: Microsoft Commercial Licensing for Windows.
Enterprise and Education are organizational editions
Enterprise and Education are intended for organizational deployment and management needs, rather than as consumer tiers to buy by default. Microsoft groups Enterprise, Enterprise multi-session, and Education on its Enterprise and Education lifecycle page.

Availability and licensing depend on the organization’s circumstances; check current licensing terms and eligibility rather than assuming there is a standard consumer purchase route.

Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC
Enterprise LTSC is a fixed-lifecycle Enterprise release for specialized deployments. It should not be treated as a general-purpose consumer edition selected just to avoid feature updates. Microsoft lists Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 as starting September 30, 2024, with mainstream support ending October 9, 2029. Check the current Enterprise LTSC 2024 lifecycle page and verify the deployment and licensing rules that apply to your organization.

Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC
IoT Enterprise is a full version of Windows Enterprise for fixed-purpose specialized devices. Microsoft says IoT Enterprise LTSC is designed for devices and use cases where functionality and features remain constant for the device’s life. Examples include regulated or critical-function deployments where a stable workload is important; this is not an ordinary home-PC licensing workaround.
Microsoft’s IoT LTSC documentation describes a 10-year lifecycle for each release and says moving to a later LTSC version requires a new license. The 2024 release is distributed to OEM device makers and enterprise customers through volume licensing, with evaluation access also described. See Microsoft’s Windows IoT Enterprise documentation for the relevant release and licensing details.

Windows 11 SE and version-specific support dates
Microsoft’s lifecycle page states that Windows 11 version 24H2 was the last supported version for Windows 11 SE. Do not assume a continuing SE release beyond that statement; check Microsoft’s Home and Pro lifecycle page for current status.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesServicing duration and a particular version’s end-of-updates date are different measures. For Windows 11 25H2, Microsoft’s supported-versions page, last updated February 10, 2026, lists October 12, 2027 for Home and Pro, and October 10, 2028 for Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise. These are version-specific dates; verify the page for the release installed on your device because lifecycle information can change. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information.
