Which Wi-Fi Smart Plug Should You Choose? Five Options for Different Homes

Compare five Wi-Fi smart plugs by platform, monitoring, scheduling and use case, with model-specific compatibility and safety checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right Wi-Fi smart plug depends on your platform, the appliance you want to control, and whether you need energy monitoring. For broad compatibility, consider a Matter-capable model such as the TP-Link Tapo family or D-Link PM-01M; for simple scheduling, the Kasa EP10 is a more basic option. Check the exact model number before buying: similarly named plugs can differ in protocol, ratings, and features.

Five Wi-Fi smart plugs, matched to different needs

These are use-case-led candidates, not a definitive ranking or a claim that every listed model is available in every U.S. store. Confirm the precise SKU, app requirements, plug format, and current compatibility before purchase. In particular, P125M, TP15, and PW15 are distinct model labels, as are EP25 and KP125M.

Model Best fit What the cited sources establish Check before choosing
TP-Link Tapo P125M / TP15 family General use where Matter compatibility is useful WIRED discusses a Tapo Matter plug and setup with major platforms. TP-Link’s PW15 page specifies Wi-Fi, electrical rating, dimensions, and platform details for that model. WIRED’s smart-plug guide; TP-Link PW15 specifications. Do not treat P125M, TP15, and PW15 as interchangeable. Confirm the exact model’s app and platform support.
D-Link PM-01M Matter and energy-use monitoring D-Link lists Matter, consumption tracking, schedules, and over-use alerts. Its North American rating is 120 V, 15 A, 1,800 W. D-Link PM-01M specifications. D-Link says Matter controllers are not included. Confirm controller and app requirements, and whether energy reports work with your chosen setup.
Kasa EP10 Basic compact plug for schedules and scenes WIRED describes a compact design, schedules, and scenes, and lists Alexa and Google Assistant support. TP-Link’s catalog includes the EP10 in the Kasa range. WIRED’s smart-plug guide; TP-Link Kasa catalog. The cited material does not establish Matter or energy monitoring for the EP10. Do not infer either feature from other Kasa models.
Kasa EP25 / KP125M family Energy monitoring WIRED identifies the EP25 as an energy-monitoring alternative; TP-Link’s catalog lists energy-monitoring models, including Matter variants. WIRED’s smart-plug guide; TP-Link Kasa catalog. EP25 and KP125M are different labels. Verify exact model, platform support, and what is included in the package.
WiZ Smart Plug Budget-oriented, basic Wi-Fi use TechRadar lists it as a budget pick and reports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, no energy monitoring, and no Apple HomeKit support. TechRadar’s smart-plug guide. The cited guide reports an update on September 22, 2026, but pricing can change; check the live listing and exact regional model.

How to choose for your setup

Start with your platform and protocol

Choose a plug that explicitly supports the platform you use, either directly or through Matter and a compatible controller. Matter support does not guarantee that every platform exposes every feature in the same way. TP-Link describes setup for its PW15 through compatible apps; D-Link states that a Matter controller is not included. Check the product page for the exact model and your intended app before assuming setup is hub-free.

Check whether the device resumes when power returns

A smart plug can cut and restore power; it cannot press a button or choose an appliance mode. It works best with a device that resumes its job when power returns, such as a lamp with a mechanical on/off switch. If an appliance needs a button press or mode selection after an interruption, scheduling or remote switching may not produce the result you expect.

Decide whether energy monitoring matters

Monitoring is model-specific. The D-Link PM-01M is described as tracking current use and consumption and offering configurable over-use alerts. TP-Link’s catalog identifies selected models as energy-monitoring plugs. Monitoring can help you see reported use; it does not guarantee lower bills or savings.

Measure the outlet and check the load

Compare the plug’s shape with the space around the outlet, including whether it blocks the neighboring socket or fits a recessed outlet or power strip. Match the connected device’s electrical requirements to the rating of the exact plug. For reference, TP-Link lists the PW15 as UL-certified and rated 15 A/1,800 W at 120 V for general/resistive load; D-Link lists the PM-01M at 120 V, 15 A, and 1,800 W. These are manufacturer specifications for those models, not a rating to apply to other plugs.

Use outdoor-rated products outdoors

A standard indoor smart plug is not an outdoor substitute. TP-Link’s catalog identifies the EP40A as IP64 weatherproof; verify that exact model’s instructions and suitability for the location before using it outside.

What smart plugs are poor choices for

WIRED cautions against appliances that need a further button press or mode choice after power is restored, with some kettles and coffee machines as examples. It also warns against major appliances and placements that are difficult to reach. Treat these as practical cautions rather than a universal electrical-code rule: check the appliance and plug instructions, electrical load, and the consequences of switching power remotely.

Remote control and setup

Remote use depends on a successful network and app setup, and some Matter configurations require a compatible controller. Follow the exact model’s setup instructions and confirm that the plug appears in the intended app before relying on it away from home. A product’s protocol label alone does not confirm that all scheduling, monitoring, or alert features will be available through every controller.

Check recall notices before using a plug

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published a recall for Emporia North America smart plugs because of an electric-shock hazard. If you own one, use the CPSC recall notice to identify affected products and follow the official remedy instructions.
