For a home network, choose WPA3 Personal if your router and the devices that need to connect support it. If older devices do not, use WPA2/WPA3 Transitional; if that is unavailable or incompatible, choose WPA2 Personal (AES). Avoid WEP, WPA Personal, WPA/WPA2 mixed modes, and TKIP.
How the Wi-Fi security options compare
| Setting | What it means | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| WPA3 Personal | A current Wi-Fi security mode that authenticates connections and uses AES encryption to help protect data sent over the air. | Use it when your router and relevant devices support it. Apple recommends it for better security. |
| WPA2/WPA3 Transitional | A compatibility mode: supported devices use WPA3 Personal, while older devices can connect using WPA2 Personal (AES). | Use it when older devices still need access and the router offers this mode. |
| WPA2 Personal (AES) | WPA2 security using AES encryption. | Use it as the fallback if WPA3 Personal and Transitional mode cannot be used. |
| WEP, WPA Personal, WPA/WPA2 mixed modes, or TKIP | Legacy or deprecated security choices. | Avoid them; they are not recommended as normal fallbacks. |
These options are not available on every router, and compatibility varies by router firmware and client device. Check the documentation for the exact router and devices rather than assuming a model supports a particular mode. Apple’s router security recommendations identify WPA3 Personal as the preferred setting, Transitional mode as the bridge for older devices, and WPA2 Personal (AES) as the next option.

WPA3 vs. WPA2: which should you choose?
Choose WPA3 Personal when your devices support it
Set the router to WPA3 Personal if all the devices that need Wi-Fi access can connect using it. Apple recommends this mode for better security. WPA2 and WPA3 authenticate connections and use AES to protect data sent over the air; Apple Platform Security describes the encryption as 128-bit AES. That figure describes the encryption, not a guarantee against weak passwords, outdated router software, or unsupported devices.

If an older device cannot join a WPA3-only network, WPA2/WPA3 Transitional mode may let it connect using WPA2 Personal (AES) while compatible devices use WPA3 Personal. Apple describes this mode specifically as a compatibility option. It is not the same as enabling older WPA, WEP, or TKIP settings.

Fall back to WPA2 Personal (AES) if needed
If your router does not offer WPA3 or Transitional mode, or a required device cannot connect under those settings, select WPA2 Personal with AES. When the router presents a separate cipher choice for WPA2 Personal, Apple says to choose AES.
AES and TKIP are not Wi-Fi security generations
WPA2 and WPA3 are security protocol generations or modes. AES is an encryption algorithm used to protect wireless data; it is not a WPA generation. TKIP is an older security component that Apple lists among weak or deprecated choices. If a router asks you to choose AES or TKIP, do not treat TKIP as an equivalent modern alternative: choose AES where WPA2 Personal is the selected mode, and avoid TKIP.

Why to avoid WEP and older WPA modes
WEP, WPA Personal, WPA/WPA2 mixed modes, and TKIP are legacy or deprecated choices in Apple’s guidance. They should not be used as routine compatibility fallbacks. If a device only works with one of these settings, check its documentation and whether it can be updated or replaced; do not weaken the whole network without understanding the security trade-off.

- Check support first. Confirm the router firmware and the devices that need access support WPA3 Personal or WPA2/WPA3 Transitional. Consult the exact model’s documentation.
- Update the router firmware. Apple recommends keeping router software current; use the manufacturer’s documented update process.
- Open the router’s configuration webpage or app. Sign in as an administrator and locate the Wi-Fi or wireless security setting.
- Select the strongest compatible option. Choose WPA3 Personal if all necessary devices support it; otherwise choose WPA2/WPA3 Transitional, or WPA2 Personal (AES) if stronger modes cannot be used.
- Apply the setting consistently. If the router has multiple access points or bands, check that the intended security mode is configured across them.
- Reconnect devices if necessary. Some devices may need to forget the saved Wi-Fi network and join it again with the network password.
Use a strong Wi-Fi password as well. A security mode cannot make up for a weak password or unpatched router.
If an Apple device warns that the network is weak
Apple recommends updating the router settings to meet or exceed its guidance. If you do not administer the network—for example, on a workplace or shared network—pass the warning to the network administrator rather than changing settings you do not control. Apple’s current router guidance, published June 3, 2026, says: “Set to WPA3 Personal for better security, or set to WPA2/WPA3 Transitional for compatibility with older devices.”

When WPA3 Enterprise is relevant
WPA3 Enterprise is a separate mode for enterprise Wi-Fi, not the normal home-router recommendation. Apple Platform Security says its WPA3 Enterprise 192-bit security mode includes 256-bit AES encryption on compatible access points. For a typical home network, the relevant choice remains WPA3 Personal, Transitional mode for compatibility, or WPA2 Personal (AES) when stronger modes are unavailable.
