Start by deciding what you need to see and how long footage must remain available; then check the exact model’s power, Wi-Fi, storage, privacy and compatibility requirements.
Start with the scene you need to monitor
Decide what the camera must cover before comparing specifications. An indoor room, a sheltered entry and an exposed outdoor area create different demands for weather protection, mounting, power, field of view and night visibility. Measure the distance to the area of interest and check the Wi-Fi signal where the camera will actually sit; a strong signal beside the router does not guarantee a reliable connection at the mounting point.

- View: Choose a fixed camera for a stable sightline or pan/tilt if you need to redirect the view. Check field of view and whether the camera can cover the relevant doorway, path or room from its planned position.
- Power: Confirm how the camera is powered and whether an outlet or other supported power source is available at the installation point.
- Lighting: Assess the scene at night and at the distance where detail matters. A higher resolution label alone does not establish that a face or other detail will be identifiable in poor light.
- Alerts and interaction: Decide whether you need motion notifications, person detection, two-way audio or continuous recording. Verify each feature on the exact model rather than assuming it is standard across a product line.

Choose how footage will be recorded and retained
Storage determines where footage lives, how you retrieve it and what can happen if a camera or connection is lost. Check whether the storage option supports the recording mode and retention period you need: event clips are not equivalent to continuous recording, and remote playback depends on the model, service and network.

| Recording approach | What to consider |
|---|---|
| MicroSD card in the camera | Can avoid a recurring cloud plan, but the recording is physically in the camera and may be lost if it is damaged or removed. Confirm supported capacity, card requirements, recording modes and whether the card is sold separately. |
| Hub, recorder or NAS | Can keep recordings on separate hardware on the property, but requires compatible equipment and setup. Verify that the camera works with the exact hub, NVR or NAS and supports the recording features you need. |
| Cloud storage | Can make footage available off-site and may preserve uploaded recordings if the camera is lost. It depends on internet and service availability and may require a subscription; check retention, remote playback and whether continuous recording is included. |
| Hybrid storage | Can combine local and cloud recording, but the available modes, retention and cost depend on the particular camera and plan. Confirm what continues recording if internet access or the cloud service is unavailable. |
A camera can work without a cloud subscription if its model supports a usable local recording option, but confirm whether that option provides the recording mode and playback access you want. Include the cost of a compatible card or recorder, plus any optional recurring plan, in the total cost.
For a concrete feature example—not a current recommendation—TP-Link’s TC73 page describes a 2K pan/tilt camera with physical privacy control, local microSD support up to 512 GB (card purchased separately) and separately subscribed Tapo Care cloud storage. The manufacturer marks the TC73 end of life, so do not treat it as a current buying choice: TC73 product information.

Check compatibility with your Wi-Fi and recording setup
Verify the exact model and regional version against your network and intended integrations. Do not assume that every camera from one manufacturer supports the same bands, storage modes or recorder connections.

- Wi-Fi band: Check whether the camera needs 2.4 GHz, supports 5 GHz, or works with your router’s configuration. Some cameras limited to 2.4 GHz can require extra setup on combined-band Wi-Fi networks, as Consumer Reports notes in its buying guide.
- Accounts and apps: Find out whether setup requires a vendor account, which mobile operating systems are supported and how access can be shared with household members or staff.
- Storage and recorder links: Confirm card limits and recording modes, and verify explicit compatibility with any planned hub, NVR or NAS. If relying on RTSP or ONVIF, check that the exact model supports the needed protocol and features.
- Smart-home integration: Confirm support for the specific smart-home system and functions you intend to use; a general compatibility claim may not cover every feature.
TP-Link’s support documentation says most Kasa cameras support 2.4 GHz only, while KC120 and KC200 support both 2.4 and 5 GHz; it also says Kasa cameras do not support RTSP/ONVIF. For business installations that depend on cross-vendor cloud surveillance, ONVIF describes Profile V as a way for conformant products to interoperate. Its FAQ says Profile V is at the Release Candidate stage and that products cannot yet be purchased as Profile V conformant. If interoperability is central to the installation, verify a product’s claimed conformance in ONVIF’s database once the profile is finalized; a generic claim of ONVIF support is not the same as verified conformance to a named profile. See ONVIF Profile V FAQ.
Secure the camera, account and network
A camera’s security depends on more than its own settings: the router, account credentials, software updates and access permissions all matter. The Federal Trade Commission recommends a strong router password, an enabled router firewall, router updates and WPA3 or WPA2 Wi-Fi encryption. It also suggests considering a separate network for cameras and keeping camera software updated.

- Set a strong, unique password for the router and for the camera account; avoid reusing credentials from other services.
- Use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption on the wireless network and keep the router’s firewall enabled.
- Install router and camera software updates when available. Check how the manufacturer delivers firmware updates and whether the model remains supported.
- Consider placing cameras on a separate network, especially where the router supports a guest or IoT network, and limit account access to people who need it.
- Review remote-viewing and sharing settings before enabling them, particularly for cameras that capture private areas.
The FTC’s guidance covers these steps and privacy considerations: How To Secure Your Home Security Cameras. Do not infer that one model’s encryption or Wi-Fi security features apply to another model from the same manufacturer.
Protect privacy and account for other people in view
Plan the camera’s field of view so it captures the area you need without unnecessarily recording private spaces or neighboring property. Before enabling audio, remote viewing or shared access, consider who can see or hear the footage and how the camera will be used. For a business, decide who is authorized to view recordings and how footage access fits the organization’s privacy requirements. Physical privacy controls can be useful, but verify that the exact model has them and understand what they disable.

Make a home or business decision
For a home, a camera with straightforward app access and local recording may be enough if you need occasional event clips and can accept the local-storage tradeoff. If you need footage to remain available after a camera is removed or lost, consider an off-camera recorder or cloud recording and verify retention and service terms.
For a business, define recording coverage, retention, user permissions and recovery needs before selecting equipment. If the system must connect to an existing NVR or combine products from multiple manufacturers, confirm exact model and protocol compatibility before purchase; do not rely on a broad “works with” statement.
