A successful check means the string is structurally plausible; it does not prove who controls the address or whether it can spend funds.
What offline address validation can—and cannot—tell you
Validation is specific to a chain, network, and address format. A regular expression or familiar-looking prefix is not enough: a robust check decodes the address and verifies its format-specific checksum and payload constraints. Network context matters too. For Bitcoin, that can mean checking a version byte or a SegWit human-readable prefix; for Ethereum, it can mean applying the EIP-55 mixed-case checksum policy.

These checks do not identify the intended recipient, establish ownership of the corresponding private key, or prove that a transaction will be accepted. They validate encoding properties, not the real-world meaning or spendability of an address.
Choose the chain and network before parsing
Ask the caller to select a chain and network, or define an explicit policy for the formats the application supports. Avoid silently guessing for a transfer: some strings can be ambiguous without context, and a parser for one network may reject an address from another.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
After selection, apply a documented input policy. For example, decide whether to reject leading or trailing whitespace rather than silently trimming it. Parse with a chain-specific decoder, then check the decoded payload size and format-specific rules before reporting a result.
Validate Bitcoin legacy addresses with Base58Check
Bitcoin legacy P2PKH and P2SH addresses use Base58Check. A local validator decodes the Base58 text, separates the version and payload from the trailing checksum, computes SHA-256 twice over the version and payload, and compares the first four digest bytes with the supplied checksum. It should then check the payload length, address type, and network version. See the Bitcoin Developer Reference for the address-conversion rules.
| Address type and network | Version byte |
|---|---|
| P2PKH mainnet | 0x00 |
| P2PKH testnet | 0x6f |
| P2SH mainnet | 0x05 |
| P2SH testnet | 0xc4 |
When implementing Base58 decoding, preserve leading zero bytes when converting between byte arrays and numeric representations. Losing them can make a correctly encoded value decode incorrectly.

Use Bitcoin network parameters in Java
The bitcoinj Java guide demonstrates parsing with new Address(params, input). Its documentation says the constructor throws when a string cannot be parsed or belongs to the wrong network. Supply the intended NetworkParameters; do not infer the network solely from the text. This is a documented Bitcoin parsing option, not evidence that the constructor supports every Bitcoin address format. Check the current library release and format support before relying on it.
See the bitcoinj guide to working with addresses for the Java example and its stated network behavior.
Validate Bitcoin SegWit addresses with Bech32 or Bech32m
SegWit addresses require a separate path from legacy Base58Check. BIP-173 defines Bech32, while BIP-350 specifies Bech32m and the checksum variant used with newer witness versions. A validator needs to check the intended network’s human-readable prefix, casing rules, checksum variant, witness version, and witness-program length—not merely whether the string begins with a familiar prefix.

For Bitcoin, the SegWit human-readable prefix is bc; network context must still be checked. See BIP-173, BIP-350, and the ERC-2304 encoding overview. The overview also warns that converting a decoded witness address to script form incorrectly can produce an unspendable or insecure output. Use a maintained implementation whose supported witness versions and test vectors match the relevant BIPs; a partial hand-written check can accept invalid strings or misinterpret a valid one.

Validate Ethereum addresses and EIP-55 checksums
An Ethereum address is 20 bytes, conventionally written as 40 hexadecimal characters with a 0x prefix. EIP-55 derives its mixed-case checksum by applying Keccak-256 to the lowercase hexadecimal address text, then choosing the case of each alphabetic character from the corresponding hash nibble. For mixed-case input, recompute the checksum and compare the casing.
Decide explicitly how to handle all-lowercase and all-uppercase inputs. Those forms can be accepted as valid but unchecksummed representations; the ERC-2304 guidance recommends warning users in that case and rejecting mixed-case input with an invalid checksum. Do not substitute standardized SHA3-256 for Ethereum’s Keccak-256. The algorithm and example addresses are specified in EIP-55.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
EIP-55 estimates that a randomly generated address mistyped by a user has a 0.0247% chance of accidentally passing its mixed-case checksum. That is the proposal’s estimate for the checksum, not a measurement of real-world wallet errors.

A bare “valid” label can be mistaken for proof that funds will reach the right person. Return structured information that says what was actually checked, for example:
validForFormat: whether parsing, payload, and checksum checks passed.chainandnetwork: the context used for parsing.addressType: the recognized format, such as Bitcoin P2PKH, P2SH, SegWit, or Ethereum.warnings: relevant caveats, such as an accepted but unchecksummed Ethereum input.

Test the validator against format rules
Build tests around both valid reference vectors and deliberate failures. The cited standards provide vectors for the relevant formats: EIP-55 includes lowercase, uppercase, and mixed-case examples; BIP-173 and BIP-350 specify SegWit cases; and bitcoinj documents parsing behavior with network parameters.
- Mutate checksum characters and confirm rejection.
- Test malformed lengths and invalid payload sizes.
- Use wrong Bitcoin version bytes and wrong SegWit human-readable prefixes.
- Test unsupported or mismatched witness-version/checksum combinations.
- Check Ethereum mixed-case inputs with invalid EIP-55 casing.
- Confirm that a Bitcoin address for the wrong selected network is rejected.
Choosing a Java implementation for more than one format
There is no established current cross-chain Java package in the cited materials that covers every format here. bitcoinj is a documented Java option for Bitcoin parsing with network context, but that does not make it a universal validator. Before adopting any dependency, verify its current release and maintenance, supported address formats and versions, network-selection strictness, checksum and payload checks, and availability of official test vectors. Keep format-specific validation separate if one library does not cover the complete policy your application needs.
