Use 5 GHz when your gaming device gets a strong, steady signal; use 2.4 GHz when distance or walls weaken 5 GHz. The faster band can offer more throughput and channel choices, but it does not guarantee lower ping. If you can connect by Ethernet, that removes the Wi-Fi link from the path and may reduce wireless variability.
How the bands differ for gaming
| Factor | 2.4 GHz | 5 GHz | What it means for gaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical reach | Longer | Shorter | 2.4 GHz may be more reliable farther from the router. |
| Walls and obstacles | Generally penetrates obstacles better | More affected by walls and obstacles | Judge the signal where the console or PC is used. |
| Throughput | Generally slower | Generally faster | 5 GHz has more capacity, though many games do not need high raw throughput. |
| Channel choice and congestion | Fewer non-overlapping channels; commonly used by household devices | More channel choices and generally less congestion | 5 GHz often has an advantage in crowded areas if its signal is strong. |
| Compatibility | More widely supported | Requires support from both router and gaming device | Check both devices before changing network settings. |
| Ping | No universal result | No universal result | Test at your gaming location; frequency alone cannot guarantee a ping value. |
These are general tendencies, not a guarantee for a particular home. ASUS notes that signal strength, interference, channel width, and device specifications also affect speed and latency (ASUS Global Support). Microsoft likewise describes 5 GHz as generally offering faster throughput, while noting the trade-off with range and obstacles (Microsoft Support).

Which band should you try first?
Near the router, with a strong signal
Try 5 GHz first. It generally provides faster throughput and more channel choices, which can help in a busy home or apartment. Microsoft says 5 GHz throughput is generally better suited to tasks such as gaming, but that is not proof it will always produce lower game ping.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Farther away or behind several walls
Test both bands where you actually play. 2.4 GHz often reaches farther and handles obstacles better, so it may provide a steadier connection than a weak 5 GHz signal. Choose the band that behaves more consistently at that location.

When you are unsure which network is which
If your router uses separate network names (SSIDs), select the 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz network explicitly on the gaming device. If both bands share one name, the device may choose a band automatically; Microsoft notes that Windows can select an available band when the network uses a single name. Device and router behavior varies.
Why the faster band may not lower your ping
Throughput is how much data a connection can carry; ping is the time it takes data to travel to a destination and back. A game usually does not need the highest possible download speed, and choosing a band does not determine the entire route to the game server. Local signal quality, interference, competing household traffic, the router, and the internet service and route all matter.

There is no established universal number of milliseconds saved by switching from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz. A faster speed-test result is not, by itself, evidence of lower or steadier in-game latency. Check the game’s connection indicators or run a consistent latency test from the same device and location when comparing bands.

How to troubleshoot before changing equipment
- Test from the gaming spot. Compare both bands in the room where the console or PC is used, not beside the router.
- Improve the signal. If practical, move the device or router closer, raise the router, or reduce barriers between them. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance explains how distance and obstacles affect Wi-Fi.
- Check for nearby network congestion. On 2.4 GHz, Microsoft recommends considering channels 1, 6, or 11, which it lists as non-overlapping choices, and checking nearby access-point use. Router settings and channel availability vary by region.
- Reduce competing traffic during play. Pause large downloads or other high-bandwidth activity if lag appears while someone else is streaming or downloading. Google notes that simultaneous high-bandwidth use can slow a connection (Google Home and Nest Help).
- Compare stability, not just top speed. Use the same device, location, and test conditions for each band. A stable connection is more useful than a brief high throughput result if latency fluctuates during a match.
When Ethernet is worth trying
If a cable run is practical, connect the gaming device directly to the router. Ethernet avoids the Wi-Fi radio hop and can sidestep wireless interference and congestion, though it cannot fix latency caused elsewhere between your home and the game server. RTINGS reports less latency and jitter in its wired test setup; its broader conclusion, based on testing 11 routers, was that a router has close to no control over total network latency in the conditions it tested (RTINGS router-latency analysis). Those findings describe its test scope, not every home network.

Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable for internet service above 100 Mbps. That is cable guidance, not a claim that a particular cable category alone lowers game ping. If the device has no Ethernet port, a compatible USB Ethernet adapter may be an option; verify compatibility with the device before choosing one.

First identify a specific problem: weak coverage in the gaming room, missing 5 GHz support, or congestion that the existing setup cannot manage. A new router is not a guaranteed ping fix. RTINGS’ router tests suggest that replacing a router alone is unlikely to resolve total network latency unless the home network is overloaded and the router can address that bottleneck.
