Reduce avoidable risk by confirming the wallet that authorizes the transaction, the network, the destination hotkey and subnet, and the TAO amount before signing. If your software offers a price-safety check, verify whether it is enabled rather than assuming it is. These checks can help catch mistakes, but they cannot guarantee asset security or protect against every loss.
Which wallet key authorizes a stake?
In the Bittensor SDK staking method, the wallet supplies the coldkey that authorizes the stake; the stake is directed to a hotkey on a specified subnet, and the amount is denominated in TAO. The SDK staking reference documents that the hotkey can default to the wallet’s hotkey if it is omitted. That makes it important to inspect the actual destination rather than assume the software selected the one you intended.

Keep the roles and addresses you use deliberate. Bittensor’s local wallet-provisioning tutorial demonstrates separate wallets for subnet owner, validator, and miner roles in its development example. It is not a universal retail-wallet configuration or a complete production security checklist, but it illustrates why selecting the correct wallet matters. Do not expose a coldkey secret to a third-party site or operator.
What should you verify before signing?
Review the transaction details in the specific wallet or interface you are using. Confirm the network and each destination field, not just a familiar account label.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Authorizing wallet: Check that the selected coldkey is the one you intend to use.
- Destination: Verify the hotkey and subnet identifier. Be especially careful if the interface fills in a hotkey automatically or does not display it prominently.
- Amount: Confirm the TAO amount and make sure it matches your intent.
- Network: Check that the wallet is connected to the intended network before signing or transferring assets.
- Address entry: For any transfer or address entry, compare the complete destination address and network with a trusted source. The provisioning tutorial specifically tells users to check the destination coldkey SS58 address when funding wallets; its example is for local development, not a formal mainnet security standard.
Should you enable safe staking?
The SDK staking reference documents an optional safe_staking check and a rate_tolerance parameter. In that API reference, safe_staking defaults to false, and the documented default tolerance is 0.005 (0.5%). These are SDK parameters, not verified defaults for every Bittensor wallet application. Check the version and interface you actually use; do not assume a price check runs unless you can confirm it is supported and enabled in that transaction path.
A tolerance is a software threshold for the documented price-safety check, not a guarantee of a particular execution price or protection from loss. The reference does not establish how a separate wallet UI implements the check, what it displays, or whether it uses the same defaults.

What do inclusion and finalization mean?
The asynchronous SDK method distinguishes waiting for transaction inclusion from waiting for finalization. Inclusion means the transaction has entered a block; finalization is a separate completion condition the method can wait for. The reference documents waiting for inclusion by default and finalization as a separate option. A submitted transaction or a brief confirmation message is not, by itself, proof that the intended stake has finalized. Wallet interfaces may use different labels or confirmation behavior.
What exposure comes with choosing a subnet?
Under Bittensor’s Dynamic TAO explanation, each subnet has TAO and alpha-token reserves, and staking is associated with subnet-specific alpha-token mechanics. The reserve ratio determines the alpha price, which can change as staking, unstaking, and emissions alter reserves. A subnet choice therefore affects the exposure involved; it should not be treated as a fixed-value deposit, and the cited mechanics do not establish that staking preserves principal or produces a particular return.

What security details are not established?
The cited material explains staking parameters and selected wallet-provisioning practices, but it does not establish hardware-wallet compatibility, supported signing devices, coldkey encryption settings, seed-phrase format, recovery steps, or a complete backup procedure. Do not infer that a particular device or backup configuration is supported by Bittensor from these sources. Consult current official guidance for the exact wallet you plan to use before relying on a recovery or signing feature.
