Take the Nintendo Switch 2 out of its carrying case before charging it. Nintendo does not specifically say whether charging inside a case is safe, but it does require unobstructed vents and adequate ventilation. Removing the console is the cautious way to meet those requirements.
Why remove the console from its case?
Nintendo says to keep adequate ventilation around the Switch 2 and its AC adapter, and not to cover the console’s air intakes or vents while playing or charging. A closed or padded carrying case can restrict airflow, so charge the console on an open surface instead. This is a precaution based on Nintendo’s ventilation guidance—not a case-specific prohibition or endorsement. Nintendo’s health and safety precautions do not provide instructions approving charging while the console remains in a carrying case.

How to charge it safely
- Open the case and remove the console. Do not charge it inside a zipped or enclosed case.
- Set it on a stable, open surface. Keep vents clear; avoid placing it on fabric piles or near heat sources or direct sunlight. Nintendo lists an operating temperature range of 41°F–95°F (5–35°C).
- Connect a compatible power source. For direct charging, connect the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter (NGN-01) to the console. If charging through the dock, use the adapter intended for the Switch 2 dock.
- Keep the adapter ventilated. Use an undamaged adapter and cable, and do not cover the adapter while charging.
- Stop if it becomes unusually hot. Disconnect power and move the system to a cooler, ventilated area. If the problem persists, contact Nintendo support.
Nintendo estimates that a Switch 2 takes approximately 3 hours to fully charge. This is a general estimate, not a guaranteed duration or a measurement for charging in a case; charging conditions can affect the time. See Nintendo’s charging instructions.

Nintendo explains that the older HAC-002 adapter cannot power the Switch 2 dock because of differences in power output. Its adapter guidance also discusses adapters rated at 54 W or more when a licensed adapter is unavailable, while warning that unlicensed products have not been tested and evaluated by Nintendo and may have compatibility problems. That is not a guarantee that any USB-C charger meeting that wattage will work safely or correctly. Check Nintendo’s adapter compatibility details and choose equipment compatible with the console.

What if liquid gets into the console?
Do not charge a Switch 2 if liquid has entered it. Follow Nintendo’s safety instructions and contact Nintendo support for guidance rather than connecting it to power.
What if the system or dock overheats?
Stop charging if the console or adapter becomes unusually hot, and move the equipment to an open, ventilated location. For dock use, make sure the dock’s vent is unobstructed and follow Nintendo’s guidance for charging and ventilation. If overheating continues, consult Nintendo support. Nintendo’s published guidance does not establish a case-specific temperature increase or charging-time penalty, so avoid assuming that a particular case is safe unless its maker provides relevant airflow and charging instructions—and continue to follow Nintendo’s ventilation requirements.
