For one already-encoded 720p YouTube stream, a 1–2 vCPU Linux VPS with 1–2 GB RAM is a reasonable starting point—but in India, choose by the selected region’s outbound-data allowance first. At 3 Mbps, a continuous stream uses about 972 GB per 30-day month before overhead; at 4 Mbps, about 1.30 TB. Amazon Lightsail’s 2 GB Linux bundle lists 3 TB of standard transfer, but Mumbai receives half that allowance, or 1.5 TB. That may suit one modest-bitrate stream, with limited headroom at 4 Mbps. It is not a tested guarantee of uninterrupted service, and a VPS that encodes or transcodes needs workload-specific testing.
Start with the stream’s data use
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously, so a VPS plan’s monthly outbound-transfer quota can matter more than its headline CPU or memory. Estimate usage from the stream’s bitrate:
30-day data in decimal GB = bitrate in Mbps × 86,400 seconds × 30 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000.
This calculation gives roughly 324 GB per Mbps per 30-day month, before transport overhead. These are calculations from bitrate and time, not provider-published benchmarks.

The estimate assumes a steady bitrate throughout the month. Actual transfer can be higher because of transport overhead, bitrate variation, reconnects, or other workloads on the VPS. Leave headroom rather than choosing a quota equal to the calculation.
Match the quota to your resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s published H.264 encoder recommendations include the following bitrates. These recommendations are codec-specific; do not mix figures from H.264 with the separate AV1 or H.265 ranges on YouTube’s encoder settings page.

The transfer estimates use the same bitrate-and-time calculation and exclude overhead. A plan that looks ample for 720p30 may be inadequate for 720p60 or 1080p. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes.
India VPS options: compare the selected region’s allowance
Published plan prices and transfer quotas can change. Confirm the current bundle, region-specific allowance, billing units, and any overage terms before purchasing; do not use a provider’s base price alone to judge 24/7 suitability.

These are not equivalent regional configurations. Bangalore may appeal if location is a priority, while Mumbai Lightsail has a documented half-allowance adjustment. Compare the exact region’s included outbound transfer and likely excess-data bill against your stream’s bitrate.
Choose a compute size based on what the VPS does
If it only sends already-encoded video
A 1–2 vCPU Linux instance with 1–2 GB RAM is a reasoned starting tier for transmitting already-encoded video, not a universal minimum or a tested promise of stable 24/7 operation. The stream’s transfer quota still needs to cover its bitrate, and the instance must be monitored and configured to reconnect or restart after interruptions.

If it encodes or transcodes
Encoding adds work that depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, media complexity, and encoder settings. The cited provider and YouTube sources do not establish a minimum VPS size for this workload. Run a representative test with the actual content and settings, observe CPU and memory use, and increase capacity if the instance cannot encode reliably while sending the stream.

- Confirm the transfer budget. Use the stream’s bitrate to estimate monthly data, then verify the allowance for the VPS plan’s exact India region and account for overhead and other server traffic.
- Configure the encoder for the target output. For H.264, follow YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube specifies no more than four seconds between keyframes. Follow the matching codec’s guidance rather than borrowing a bitrate from another codec column.
- Use YouTube’s recommended secure ingestion method. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over SSL. Its RTMPS ingestion documentation specifies connecting on port 443 and using a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint.
- Test with representative material. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio. A static test image may not expose the same encoding or bandwidth behavior as the intended stream.
- Monitor stream health and recovery. Watch YouTube’s stream-health information during testing and operation. Configure the VPS process to reconnect or restart when the connection or encoder fails, and check that recovery actually restores the live stream.
A successful test does not establish that a particular VPS will remain online continuously. No independent benchmark here proves uninterrupted operation for a given instance size.

Account for YouTube content rules
Using a VPS does not change the rights or policy status of what you stream. Make sure you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s copyright and reused-content requirements for your channel and intended use. A technically healthy stream is not a guarantee that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization.
