The Pi reads the file repeatedly, sends it at live pace to YouTube’s ingest server, and YouTube shows the incoming feed in Live Control Room. You do not need a camera when your source is already a video file. The exact command and whether the Pi can handle it depend on the file, desired output settings and whether it needs transcoding.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi and a stable power supply, network connection and storage for the source file. No particular Pi model can be recommended for every file or transcoding workload; test the actual board and settings you plan to use.
- A local video file. Check its resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether it has an audio track.
- FFmpeg installed on the Pi. Confirm its version and options; the FFmpeg documentation describes
-stream_loopand-re. - A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live, plus a stream destination and stream key from Live Control Room.
Use video and audio that you have the right to broadcast. A stream key works like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or show it in a screenshot.
Configure the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream destination and stream key shown for the stream. Keep both private; use the current destination and key rather than a value copied from an old setup.
- Choose output settings using YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your target resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported, documents H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). Its bitrate guidance varies by resolution and frame rate, so consult the current table rather than applying one bitrate to every video.
- Check the Pi’s upload capacity under load. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and testing with a stream whose audio and motion are similar to the planned broadcast.
RTMPS is RTMP carried through an SSL connection. Prefer it when your encoder supports it. YouTube’s exact destination details and encoder workflow can vary, so use the values presented for your live stream in Live Control Room.
Loop the video with FFmpeg
The essential input options are -stream_loop -1, which repeats the input indefinitely, and -re, which reads it at its native frame rate for live pacing. Put these options before the input’s -i.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4 [output options] [YouTube RTMPS destination and stream key]This is a command shape, not a copy-and-run command. Replace the bracketed parts with output settings, stream mapping, and the destination/key for your stream. The correct options depend on the actual file and YouTube’s current requirements; never put a real key in a public example or shared script.
When stream copy may work
If the source’s video and audio streams already meet the chosen ingest requirements, stream copying can avoid unnecessary encoding work. That can reduce CPU load, but compatibility must be checked against the file and YouTube’s current settings. Do not assume every MP4 has compatible codecs just because of its filename extension.

When transcoding is needed
If the file’s codecs or output format do not match the required ingest settings, FFmpeg may need to convert the video, audio, or both. Transcoding takes more processing than copying. Test the specific Pi, source file, resolution and frame rate; no general model-level performance guarantee follows from this workflow.
Start, preview and monitor the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg on the Pi with the selected file, output settings and private YouTube destination/key.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview. Check that the video moves, the picture is the expected resolution, and audio is present if the source should have audio.
- When the preview is correct, click Go live in Live Control Room if that workflow requires it.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and the Pi’s network and encoder behavior during the broadcast. Test before making a stream public or relying on it for a long session.
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior, not a guarantee that a stream will run without interruption for 12 hours.

Plan for unattended operation carefully
A command that loops a file is not, by itself, a restart or recovery plan. If you need the stream to continue unattended, configure and test how the Pi behaves after a reboot, power interruption, network loss, or FFmpeg failure. The right service supervision and restart approach depends on your Pi and operating-system setup; YouTube’s encoder guide does not provide a Raspberry Pi recovery recipe.
Before relying on a long run, validate the complete setup for the intended duration: board, power supply, cooling, storage, source file, uplink and restart behavior. Treat successful short tests as useful checks, not proof of uninterrupted operation.

Troubleshooting common failures
