For an unattended loop of prerecorded videos, FFmpeg is usually the better fit if you can manage a command line and build your own monitoring and recovery. Choose OBS if you want a graphical control room for scenes, overlays, and changes during the broadcast. Neither tool is established as inherently more reliable for 24/7 use. Both need a host that stays on, a stable upload connection, and a plan for interruptions and archives.
FFmpeg vs. OBS: which should you choose?

These are workflow trade-offs, not measured comparisons of uptime, CPU use, cost, or ease of use. YouTube’s encoder guidance applies to either tool and does not endorse one over the other. OBS documents how to diagnose dropped frames and connection status in its connection troubleshooting guide.
For a mostly static loop, use the simplest workflow you can reliably supervise. If you need visual composition or live adjustments, OBS may suit you better. If repeatable automation or headless operation matters and you can manage the process, FFmpeg may be preferable. Test your own workload rather than assuming one option is more dependable.
What you need for either setup
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube states that the minimum age for live streaming is 16.
- Prerecorded video and audio that you have the necessary rights to stream on Google services, including relevant music rights.
- A host that remains on and connected, plus sufficient, stable upload capacity for your selected stream settings.
- A YouTube stream key and an encoder configured to send the stream to YouTube.
- A plan for monitoring, process or application recovery, and preserving a replay if you need one.
Live content must follow YouTube’s live-streaming requirements, Community Guidelines, and Terms of Service. An encoder does not supply music or video rights.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube currently recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video ingestion, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube also publishes setting ranges for AV1 and H.265; consult its live table for those codecs rather than transferring the H.264 figures to them. Choose settings that match the source media and that your upload path can sustain. Test the actual video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and connection before relying on a continuous broadcast.
Set up the stream and test it before leaving it unattended
- Enable live streaming on your channel. Confirm channel verification and that no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days prevents you from going live.
- Create or schedule a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and configure the stream. Copy its stream key from the stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to stream to your channel. Do not publish it in a command, screenshot, or log that other people can access.
- Configure FFmpeg or OBS to send the stream to YouTube. Select RTMPS and use the current YouTube encoder guidance for codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate. In OBS, set up the media source or scene you intend to broadcast. With FFmpeg, configure the input and output for your media and YouTube ingest. Exact command-line options depend on the installed FFmpeg build, source format, and whether you need to encode or can pass through compatible media.
- Run a supervised test. Check the picture, audio, stream health, and upload stability with the same media and settings planned for the long run. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring. Do not assume a successful short test proves uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
- Arrange monitoring and recovery. Decide how you will notice a failed connection or stopped process and how it will be restarted. FFmpeg and OBS do not, by themselves, establish a universal recovery design; it depends on your host and operating setup.
OBS’s connection-status indicator and dropped-frame counts can help identify an unstable connection or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. YouTube also recommends monitoring stream health while live.

Plan for loops, interruptions, and YouTube archives
A continuous broadcast requires more than starting an encoder: the host must stay on, upload must remain stable, and someone or something must detect failures. Plan how the process or app will recover and how you will verify the stream after a restart. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring but does not prescribe a universal failover setup or guarantee uninterrupted service.
Do not rely on a 24/7 live session to produce a complete replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind for viewers may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If preserving a replay matters, keep a local recording or use planned shorter sessions, and check YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Copyright and monetization are separate questions
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is included. Reused content is assessed at channel level; permission to use someone else’s material does not by itself make it eligible for monetization. YouTube says: “Our reviewers will check your channel and content against our policies.” Whether a particular channel qualifies depends on YouTube’s review; watch hours or rights clearance alone do not guarantee acceptance. Read the current YouTube channel monetization policies.
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to represent that it has the necessary rights for exploitation of live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights. A loop of third-party material is not automatically safe or monetizable just because it has been uploaded or obtained with permission. Review the YouTube Terms of Service and make sure your rights cover the planned live use.
