How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream Without Leaving Your PC On

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep prerecorded videos streaming on YouTube while your own PC is off, run the encoder in the cloud. Upload the video or playlist to a cloud streaming service, connect it to YouTube with your stream URL and private stream key, then start the stream. For a DIY setup, use a remote computer or VPS that stays on; a local PC cannot keep sending a stream after it shuts down.

Choose where the stream will run

YouTube receives a feed from an encoder. If that encoder runs on your home PC, the PC and its internet connection must remain available. To switch your PC off, use a cloud service that hosts and transmits prerecorded media, or manage an always-on remote host yourself. YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; that listing establishes relevance, not comparative quality or YouTube endorsement. YouTube’s encoder setup guide

Approach What stays on What you manage
StreamNeo, a cloud option The cloud service runs the prerecorded stream. Upload media, configure the YouTube destination and start the stream.
Another managed cloud service The provider’s cloud encoder. Check its supported media, output settings, playlist and loop controls, monitoring, recovery, channel connection, data handling and current price.
Self-managed remote host A VPS or other remote computer. Configure, update, monitor and recover the encoder yourself. Specific host sizing, cost and uptime depend on the provider and setup.
Local PC Your computer and internet connection. Keep the encoder and source running locally; this does not meet the goal of turning the PC off.

There is no established independent comparison here of services’ reliability, costs or recovery performance. Compare them against your own needs rather than assuming that a provider’s presence in YouTube’s documentation is an endorsement.

Set up a prerecorded YouTube stream

  1. Enable live streaming. If the channel has never streamed, activate live streaming first. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours; after activation, a stream can go live immediately. YouTube encoder setup
  2. Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder or cloud service. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control your stream.
  3. Provide the media and configure the service. Upload or select the prerecorded video or playlist, choose the output settings, and set any looping or scheduling options the service provides. The service hosts and transmits the media, but you still need to configure YouTube as the destination.
  4. Check the preview before relying on it. Start the encoder and confirm the preview and live status in YouTube Studio. Check picture, sound and stream health; resolve any warnings before leaving the stream unattended.
  5. Use compatible encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its supported video codecs include H.264, H.265 and AV1, and its supported audio codecs include AAC and MP3. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Confirm that your chosen service supports the codec and settings you intend to use. YouTube encoder settings
  6. Plan for the archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. Its documentation does not promise automatic archiving for one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours. If a replay matters, plan stream sessions accordingly and verify the archive in YouTube Studio.

When a remote host is the DIY choice

A VPS or other remote computer can keep an encoder running while your home PC is off. You are responsible for installing and configuring the encoder, providing accessible media, keeping the host and connection available, monitoring the broadcast and restarting or repairing it when something fails. The exact host requirements and cost depend on your media, output settings and provider; there is no general sizing or uptime figure established here. If you prefer not to maintain a remote machine, choose a managed cloud service instead.

Problems to check before leaving the stream unattended

  • The stream will not start: confirm that live streaming is activated for the channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube shows no incoming feed: check that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key were copied correctly. If you replace or reset the key, update it in the encoder too.
  • The cloud service is live but YouTube is not: check the destination and stream configuration, then verify the preview and live status in Live Control Room before relying on the broadcast.
  • Video or audio is rejected or missing: compare the selected codecs and encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance, including constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds).
  • The broadcast stops when your home PC shuts down: the encoder or source is still local. Move both the prerecorded media and the streaming process to a cloud service or remote host.
  • You need a saved replay of a long broadcast: do not assume an uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will be automatically archived. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours.

Copyright and channel policy still apply

Hosting the encoder in the cloud changes where the stream runs; it does not grant rights to the video or audio. Use media you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies before running a continuous broadcast. A stream can be technically online while still being subject to YouTube’s rules.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
