Top10VPN says its 2026 comparison covered 59 VPNs and involved more than 30,000 total testing hours across its work. That aggregate is not a claim that each VPN received 30,000 hours of torrent testing. The publisher also reports average P2P bitrate; results describe its tests, not the speed every user will see on a different connection, server or protocol.
How should you choose between them?
Start with the P2P policy for your exact plan and server
Look for explicit confirmation that the plan and server you intend to use permit peer-to-peer traffic. A provider’s general support statement does not establish that every plan or server has the same policy. The free-plan limits above are specific to Windscribe and Proton VPN; they should not be generalized to all free VPNs.

Check how the privacy claims are supported
Separate a provider’s own no-logs statement from independent verification or an outside reviewer’s assessment. Consider the provider’s privacy-policy transparency and what evidence exists to support its claims. A VPN changes the network path for covered traffic; it does not guarantee complete anonymity.
Look for a kill switch and leak protections
If the VPN tunnel drops, a kill switch is intended to stop covered traffic from falling back to your ordinary connection. Leak protection can address exposures such as DNS requests, but feature labels alone do not prove how a specific app behaves. Test the VPN app and, where your torrent client supports it, bind that client to the VPN network interface.

Decide whether port forwarding matters for your use
Port forwarding can permit incoming peer connections in some configurations. Proton VPN says, “Port forwarding allows direct connections, reducing wait times and increasing peers for faster torrenting.” That is Proton’s explanation of the feature, not an independently measured result. Port forwarding is optional rather than a universal requirement; RTINGS says its absence may limit access to peers on older or poorly seeded torrents. Availability can also vary by provider and server.

A useful speed comparison should identify the test method, baseline connection, protocol, region and sustained transfer period. Top10VPN’s reported average P2P bitrate is an indicator from its testing, not a forecast for every user. Your route to the VPN server, torrent swarm, device and ISP can all affect transfers.

Include usability, account options and renewal cost
Check that the app is available for your operating system, that its kill switch and leak settings are understandable, and that your torrent client can be bound to the VPN interface if you want that safeguard. Compare the total subscription cost at the actual renewal term rather than relying on a first-term promotion; the sources reviewed do not establish a consistent like-for-like price comparison for these providers.
What should you do if the VPN disconnects?
A dropped tunnel can expose traffic that resumes over the normal connection if the app or client allows fallback. A kill switch and client binding reduce that risk, but neither should be assumed to work identically across every app, operating system and configuration.

- Enable the VPN app’s kill switch before starting a torrent, and review its leak-protection settings.
- If supported by your torrent client, set its network interface to the VPN adapter rather than leaving it on an unrestricted default. Menu names and behavior depend on the client and operating system.
- Use the VPN’s own connection status and your client’s interface settings to confirm the intended route before transferring files. If the VPN drops, stop the transfer until the tunnel is restored.
- Recheck these settings after an app, operating-system or network change; do not treat a past successful setup as proof that the current connection is protected.

Is torrenting legal, and does a VPN make it anonymous?
BitTorrent is a file-sharing protocol; using it is not itself proof that the shared material is lawful or unlawful. Whether downloading or sharing particular content is legal depends on the content and the law where you are. RTINGS cautions that downloading copyrighted material may be illegal or expose users to civil action depending on jurisdiction. A VPN does not legalize infringement, prevent enforcement or guarantee anonymity. The sources reviewed do not resolve the law for a particular country or state, so check local rules for your situation.

Do you need a VPN-compatible router?
